My wife has just landed in the UK for a visit...

Popped a 'GiffGaff' (a VNO on O2) SIM into her phone and loaded £10 (circa R140) she gets:

250 Voice Minutes
Unlimited SMS
Unlimited Data
Free On-Network Calls

We are still being shafted big time by Vodacon & MTN...

MTN and vodacom are bent on refusing to offer bundles bigger than 2Gb. Well MTN mainly seeing as vodacom are moving albeit slowly and expensively if you exclude the 20gb mofaya of last year.

Cell C is R15 per 100MB. So R45 for 300MB. MTN is still 120% more expensive. Still, it's a step in the right direction.
Another way of looking at it:

Cell C is R15 per 100MB or R45 for 300MB => 15c/MB
MTN now is R99 per 300MB => 33c/MB
For the same R45+R4 on MTN you will get 75MB => 65c/MB

MTN is 2.2x/4.4x more expensive than Cell-C.

It is not as simple. It is called quality of the network.

They have better coverage true,I was previously with MTN for 12 years so I would know their coverage is excellent but where there is coverage the speeds on Cell C are alot better so it evens out depending on how much you travel which would tip the "quality" either for or against you.

So the price is still not justified by MTN.

Not too long ago they had their 2GB bundle on promo for R189, now 500MB for R149. What is it that they don't understand? Give us better bundles.

Agreed. On MTN I get edge at the majority of my clients in Sandton as well as my home and immediate surroundings in Pretoria. With my Cell C sim, which is unfortunately not my primary number until my MTN contract dies, I get HSPA at the very least at the same locations. At the high density areas Cell C seems to have the upper hand over MTN.

Mtn sucks big time. I will definitely be moving elsewhere when my contracts, 3 of them, are up. Cell C has pretty decent coverage where I work and stay so no worries there.

Moving over to Cell C from MTN soon. Cell C gives me constant HSDPA in my area which is densely populated as to MTN which uses Edge. Oh and the data is much more cheaper on Cell C :)
