MTN cuts international roaming rates

A comparison with Vodacom's rates would be interesting...

Good grief. Why such a stupid whay of billing? Can someone please just check my calculation? If I convert it it comes to about R10.00 per meg?

Pity not so many people actually visit these countries. You still screws if you go to the UK. Vodacom is better suited when visiting Vodafone partner countries. R17.00 a meg there about I think.

Its 3-5 times more expensive to roam with MTN on the MTN African networks than buying a prepaid card in these countries. So take your deal and show it MTN. :(

OMG, you can get, on MTN Uganda, a 3GB prepaid bundle for R261!!! So who is screwing who MTN?!

One would think in this day and age there would be a market for a cheap provider with no frills and advertising, just a cheap, good service where they don't have to charge you more to produce ads to convince you they are any good...

Buy a local SIM and email the few people that really need to get hold of you while you are away the number.

How hard can it be? All this is one massive stupid/lazy tax :sick:

Who saw that episode on Carte Blanche about the guy who had a R100 k + phone bill from using international roaming?
When they approached the cell providers about the issues they said it was out of their hands and the cause o the high pricing was the international cellphone providers...
Clearly they were talking bullshlt...as is demonstrated with these supposed price cuts.So tell us, how can you cut your prices suddenly, I thought it was out of your hands?

The irony with all this BS roaming . If you got to a country where MTN / Vodacom actually are [African countries] it is CHEAPER to use the local MTN/Vodacom prepaid data+voice to phone back to South Africa than freaking roaming ON THEIR OWN NETWORK!!!!


Ripoff artists i tell you. SA is subsidizing all their operations in Africa.

MTN is is varking useless when it comes to international roaming. I've been to 4 major countries and my wife who is on Vodacom always manages to connect while MTN hasn't partnered with anyone. In the one country that I could connect, i couldn't send SMSs I could only receive!

No wonder MTN is cutting the rates, because theres no international coverage to speak of!

It is still not worth it to roam anyway , if people just realize how easy it is to pick up a prepaid sim in a foreign country and use that to contact people you'd never roam.
 
R10,000 per gb for data.... wonderful price cuts there....
 
if mtn could reduce their local rates it would be nicer
 
I'm a bit clueless. If you have an MTN Blackberry, is BIS data also charged at roaming fees or does your blackberry use the countries BIS? If not, then its actually cheaper to just go to an internet cafe and use your gmail there?

No, you pay roaming. Trust me, don't ever try using your BIS in a foreign country you will get the surprise of your life.

EDIT: So yes, it IS cheaper to go sit in an internet cafe OR using a prepaid sim from the LOCAL country [in germany i could use prepaid 3G on Orange/Vodafone/T-Mobile for a similar price than here, which is a TON cheaper than roaming!!!]

There are different reasons why people choose to roam. Even if you are on a prepaid service, there are some conditions that necessitate one to roam. For example, you can't use a SIM card of one competitor on a phone purchased from another provider or you will shove your warranty privileges.

Vodacom opted into Vodafone Passport many years ago, which offers benefits across a number of countries. They also introduced SMS only roaming a while ago, which lets you stay in touch without being liable for massive phone bills. I'm not saying it is perfect, just that there is something.

Problem with MTN rates is they are all per-minute billing, so your actual per-minute rate is actually a lot higher than the rates shown in this article.

Vodacom's Passport is even worse - low advertised per-minute rates but you pay an upfront amount which sets you back radically on short duration calls

These prices are just when using MTN and roaming on MTN...
