MTN data subscriber numbers revealed (March 2012)

They only have themselves to blame. Pricing and too many complicated products.

On the upside for them, if only 700000 of 10.9 million are using data bundles. They're making a killing off the other users. Are those people all paying R2 per MB?

I am not using Mobile Data anymore it's too expensive rather stick to DSL. Vodacom can do 5Mbps here imagine that with 500MB data bundle.

Shocked? Really? 50MB/pm? It's because your data is expensive give us R25=250MB you'll be more shocked how much we would use.

I loaded MTN's prepaid 2GB for R189 databundle just the other week.

I am on 700MB. That means I have munched through 1.3GB in two weeks only on my mobile.

So, I am holding myself back now till next month coz R189 for 2GB can turn out to be pretty expensive.

At the rate I am going I need 4GB for R189 (or 1GB for R50). That would be more reasonable and practical for me.

The only thing stopping me from using data is its cost.

is this all what MTN wanted to say?mybb article suggested MTN might launch new data prizes, did MTN invite the media for this short statement?

Well said.

This is a really disappointing article given the related article that precedes it. I was (am still) expecting a more pragmatic statement on this issue from both MTN and MyBB this week.

Otherwise, stop teasing us.

I'm busy working on the write-up, but if you were expecting new services (as we were) you should prepare to be disappointed. Please see the previous article's thread for the update we received from the PR company that arranged the event for MTN.

When I want 3G internet access, I use my 8.ta SIM. Haven't had data enabled on my MTN contract since 2007.

they found that the average customer uses 50MB per month

Is that all the customers/total megs, or is it active customer/total megs?

I also suspect that there are usage groupings by customers - you have a whole lot who use very little data but some (maybe the occasional web browse or on whatsapp, then a few who use a lot of data (music, e-mails etc). The average would tell you virtually nothing about the needs of either group.

Jan, does anyone have any ideas as to why none of the operators are keen to release a real BIS-type service for people with Android/iPhones? The only reason I can think of is that the primary reason why Blackberry's are so popular is the "free" data, and so releasing a proper uncapped service (or at least competitively priced bundles) for proper smartphones will kill the demand for Blackberry...

If 8ta can give us data at approx 1.5c/MB (the 60GB+60GB promo), there is no reason why MTN can't do the same... Even if we're paying 10c/MB, we'll use far more data than we do now - I use about 750MB a month on my Android (and I'm conservative!), but as much of that as possible goes through wifi - if MTN charged a reasonable rate for data I'd never turn my phone's wifi on again!

just waiting for another network to make a special that'll take me away from this god forsaken place
