MTN Data Technical Thread

i think the data bundles are adhoc on pre-paid.
you can simply purchase one data bundle and it will last 30 days.

thereafter you may purchase again whenever you wish and a new 30 days will run from the date of purchase.

Hi.
Does mtn supply adhoc databundles? if not when will they. Do these run a calendar month or one month from the time of buying.
If one cannot get adhoc data bundles and one buys a monthly data bundle does the bundle run for a month from the starting date or does it run for a calendar month from buying or do they supply a pro rata data amount and charge a pro rata amount.
Thanks.

Hi Rory

I'm not sure how your SP bill's you, most run on a invoice date so if your invoice date is the 21st then your free minutes or data bundle are added that day or the next day, I believe with MTNSP you can have for example the 500mb bundle this month next month you can change it to something else, but if I look at your post what you looking for is maybe having the 500mb bundle half of the month and then changing it into the month that's not available as yet but would be quite nice to see.

I must say, it's great having an MTN representative here on these forums.

Thanks for sorting out my problem within minutes.

Big ups to MTNDD.

Does the MTN F@stLink E620 card come in a USB equivelant ? (For 3G and HSDPA functions) What is the cost of the current MTN F@astLink USB modem ?

I read today that CELL C introduced their first GPRS/EDGE USB Modem.

Huawei has annouced a USB 3.6Mbps HSDPA modem, but they haven't annouced it here yet, I take it from this article http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=3572 that we'll probably see it here sometime soon?

I purchased a PCCMIA to PCI convertor to use the HSDPA cards in my PC, you can get them through Mustek, contact your fav supplier.

Card is a PCT1010R (on the price list as SMC2602W/PTC1010), dealer price ex VAT was R190 a month ago...

G3 phone vs Data Card?

Apologies if this question has been asked and answered previously. I am a new visitor to this forum.

I live in a rural area where Telkom is notoriously unreliable. I currently use my Nokia 6230/ Bluetooth/ laptop to access email/ the web via GPRS. The usual cell towers are Bapsfontein and occasionally Kempton Park.

I am now due for a phone upgrade, MTN/ Nashua Mobile and want to know if I should opt for a G3 phone or a new phone + Data Card for laptop. I hardly ever use the phone itself to browse, always via the laptop.

If I opt for the Data Card, should I go for a 2 yr contract or Data Bundles, bearing in mind that the Broadband scene is changing so fast?

Everyone’s input appreciated

Rural I would say go for a MTN Data card (@49pm/2yr). They are exactly the same as the Vodacom ones but they are unlcoked so you can shop around for other sims ie. voda/cellc/virgin and u should get a headset in the deal too.

Personally I would go for a phone with HSDPA capabilities (as it should be backwards compatible for 3G/EDGE/GPRS). Funny thing and correct if I'm wrong but as far as I know none of the new HSPDA data cards support WLAN and I have not seen a phone that supports WLAN + HSDPA (Only WLAN or HSDPA but not both). Would be nice though.

But if you have a Centrino laptop and a data card/phone with HSDPA (and afcourse coverage) then you should be a happy camper.

Hi MTNDD,

I use my handset (SE W900i) to connect via USB to my computer and I'm only getting around 3-5KB/s (similar to 56k) - I am in a "Yello'Broadband" area: Randpark ridge - JHB. My PC is reporting; "Connected at 480Kbps". (I do know the difference between KB and Kb)

What speeds should I be getting while downloading from the internet with 3G?

Discusss with MTN walkin service centre in Century City

:( I got my F@stLink E620 Data Card from MTN walkin service centre in Century City. What a mission. It took me about 2 hours and still I walk out without the card. After the consultant told me it will take an hour to credit vet my application. Well after 2 hours nothing. I decided to come back the next day. So the next day I am back after traveling up and down from Paarl. This time it took a nother hour before I got my card. Back at home all exited open my packaging I discover that there is no headset with the card for the telephone fuction. What is more fustrating I can't call them to check if they got one with a headset. So does anyone have any ideas.

The W900i is a 3G phone isn't it?

When you connect on your signal bar does it have 3G there?

Let me know

Good day,

Could you please supply me with the person you dealt with?

I just want to take this up for you, can you please PM me with your cell phone number and what I'll do is follow this up to see what was going on with vetting and also to try and get Century City to source the ear piece for you.

Yes it is a 3G phone.
http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/Jan2006/2525.htm

I'm a bit new to the phone and the manual is lacking vital information for 3G. But I know now what the 3G icon looks like.

I have found a very weak (1-2 bars/5) 3G signal outside my flat though I have to 'force' my phone on to it. As soon as I'm inside my flat it seems to lose that signal completely and changes back to a non 3G network - full signal. I looked at the coverage map and I'm suppose to have full HSDPA in the area of Boskruin (JHB).

Is there anything MTN can do to improve the 3G signal in the area?

Good day,

What I'd suggest is that you log a call with our Network Coverage helpdesk on 011 301 2583 for faxed queries.

LaRoosTa - Just keep in mind the "Connected at 480Kbps" which your pc reports is a bit missleading in terms of your actual download speed. Remember this only means that your PC and your phone are connected to each other @ 480Kbps (Which is the standard speed of USB2.0)
Your actual downloading speed depends on coverage - If you connect on 3G (384Kbps) your effective top download speed should be 48KB/s (384kbps/8).

For example we have a 128k diginet line at work and my top download speed is about 15-16 kb/s (128k/8 = 16)

If I'm wrong about this anyone can correct me.

No you not wrong to get a more accurate speed you can do an online broadband test and that should give you a good indication.

Thanks for clearing that up, debug.

Its definately a 3G signal problem and I've sent them an email.

Thanks for your help MTNDD.
