MTN expands 7.2 Mbps HSDPA coverage

rpm, do you have clarity on what 'upgrade' sites mean?
According to MTN SA CTO Sameer Dave MTN currently has 361 ‘upgrade’ HSDPA sites of which over a hundred are 7.2 Mbps enabled.
Would that be 3.6 enabled? 361 sounds a bit low for the full HS network.

While it is great news for consumers that 7.2 coverage is becoming more widely available, it is still that reliance on Telkodemonopolies for local backhaul links that needs a viable & timely alternative - especially when Telkodemonopolies is still using copper for those links insead of fibre optic.

When SEACOM is online, demand for bandwidth will naturally increase, only to be met with local backhaul limitations - not much can be done about that before SEACOM is online but something still needs to be done that doesn't involve the ineptitude of Telkodemonopolies - the beast simply is not up to the task - it can continue to play a role but to a lesser extent - give the local backhaul provisioning jobs to other companies - e.g. DFA...

anyone ditching telkom is good news.

ps. i must shout at telkom again today.....

As Economists know: Monopolies tend to under-supply to keep their profits high..

Just as Eskom was warned long ago about lack of powerstations to support South Africa with enough energy in the future, Telkom will also never bother to upgrade the telecom infrastructure.

And since our goverment seems to have its finger in the pies of these monopolies the south african citizen will never get a fair deal.

No idea,

It says staff writer I would assume so... Maybe MTN can also play the Vodacom game :p

So now it's OK? ;) :D

Do you know what the MTN-def of 'upgrade' tower is? Probably a 2G tower that got 3G added?

Also, do you guys differentiate between 3.6 and 7.2 like we do, or do you activate 7.2 on any 3.6 tower?

I have never said it's ok. I said "to label" it as Staff writer is wrong. Period.

rpm said he'll address that so till then what should I say

Should I say halt all publications still rpm sorts the matter or should I just accept that change is in the pipeline ...

I fail to see how I condoned it. I said "It says staff writer so I assume so"
And "MTN can also play the Vodacom game" I still feel very strongly about these press releases pushed out as news. Because it's not.

think I might switch to MTN... hope they're as good as this sounds!

Please explain how you did this! I was under the impression it could only manage 3.6.

Just checked the Huawei site and only mentions 3.6.

err...go to the mtn site and upgrade your drivers? might be some flashing involved too, but it's no biggie....

I Need to buy more Cap today - dunno what to do? are these 7.2 HSDPA towers activated yet or is this still going to happen? (Kempton Park Area)

Hi Vodacom3G

Yes, it means 3.6 Mbps enabled. MTN said last year that they will roll out HSDPA 3.6 Mbps as enough backhaul becomes available, and this is what we are reporting on.

BTW: Not a press release – this is generally not the type of information which companies put in a press statement: we have to corner someone at MTN or Vodacom to get this info ;)

I didn't know that :o

Thanks for clearing it up rpm.

Hmmm..., now everyone better complain that myBB is biased toward MTN, with the word 'MTN' appearing 12 times in this article. :D:D

(Remember when Skeptik accused myBB of bias when an article about VC contained the word 'Vodacom' 15 times.)

Actually thinking about it, 'upgrade sites' probably means 2G-sites that got upgraded to 3G. As opposed to brand-new sites.

The networks prefer to upgrade sites as everything is already in place, especially the environmental stuff.

Can someone post info on what areas are HSDPA 7.2 enable

i just upgraded my E220 to support 7.2

That's what I would like to know as well. Any chance of MTN ever publishing a coverage map?

Funny how you miss the most important bit in your reply.

Maybe because that is not my area of expertise  How is your company's financial growth, how much base returns did they make and how much gross loss did your company suffer due to insufficient revenue assurance practices ?

oooo is that not your area ?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: MTN needs to step up to the plate on this forum. Whatever happened to the MTNDataDude?
