MTN hit on all fronts

Their data deals are falling behind the competition. I think that they are falling way behind ... so much so that they would be my 4th choice when it comes to data. They have got to boost their data offering (lower prices, more data, something) because people are using devices which use data and so this is now part of decision making. Come on MTN, at least keep up with someone rather than isolate yourself.

Ja well, you want to be a greedy fat cat, I hope they feel it now.

"Despite this the mobile operator managed to post a 9.4% increase in revenue to R56.5m in its interim results to end June 2011- boasting a healthy dividend ratio that has increased by 65%."

What is it with journalists, they never proof read their own article - surely R56.5m must read BILLION !

Hopefully they can surprise us with LTE soon. But I agree, they need to come up with some real innovation regarding their data offerings.

Why does anyone bother with MTN? It's as if the majority of the population has not heard of number portability (which you can do every three months).

Cell C and 8ta are the most active in promotions and offering consumers some extra bang for their buck.

MTN would rather spend money on ads than competing. Advertising an uncompetitive product only works for so long, then the Emperor is revealed to have no clothes!

Dabengwa says whilst the network operator’s performance has been less impressive than some of its peers on the broadband front ...
This gets my vote for understatement of the year.

Good!

Their data deals are pathetic, they need to start being competitive or go down just like they are currently screwing us!

Beri, after being with mtn for 8 years due to their phone deals i'm leaving them today as my contract has just expired....their data deals are simply pathetic and its keeping me unconnected.

I have to say though that their call center picks up the phone within a few seconds and also the general the service itself is very good, also voice connections are reliable....if they decide to become competitive before CELL C gets coverage in my area I may just stay on and give them a second chance but at current rates on data I'LL AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE!

For now beri if you have cell c coverage then its a simple choice, cell c is your saviour, they offering phones like the samsung galaxy s2 for R280 p/m which is just great!Dont think even mtn can match that!

All those puff-pieces of 'visionary' CEOs gracing magazine covers of cell phone companies should now be a thing of the past.

MTN is reeling and real competition in the mobile telephony has not really began. For far too long these companies just sat back and ripped off the masses of SA; whilst awarding themselves huge bonuses. Any silly event is sponsored by a mobile operator. Their TV ads just become more and more extravagant. This is resembles a criminal enterprise rather than a utility company (there is nothing revolutionary of the technology behind these companies).

The companies should be ashamed of having the highest cost cell-phone rates in the world. Given that competition has not really taken root (except marginally in the mobile data sector), and that MTN is already seeing their super-normal profits shrink, leaves the conclusion that their management is not up to the task of delivering efficiencies by lower cell-phone rates and increased utilisation of their networks. The companies have a bloated expense structure. Perhaps, the stocked up with too many lawyers, fighting ICASA, rather than technologists seeking efficiencies.

India is a model they should look at, perhaps this was the reason that Reliance could not buy MTN. MTN wanted too much for nothing but a mobile licence. There is no real intellectual property there. Only a mafia-style protection racket.

It is cheaper to make a mobile-to mobile phone call from India to South Africa than a make a to make a mobile-to mobile phone call within South Africa. In India mobile call rates are 1 (US) cent per minute! This is a serious indictment on corporate SA and the telephony sector in particular.

This also holds back SA's economic growth. Shame on MTN/Vodacom! Totally unpatriotic.

we have been waiting for mtn's respond to vodacom and cell c data price cuts for far too long now,mtn officially stated that it wants to match vodacom's extensive data network, what about matching vodacom on data prizes?

Uhm.. India has a huge ass population with heavy population density, comparing SA with India in terms of cellular coverage + cost is just stupid as the economy of scale is skewed heavily in their favor. Cellular + telecoms in general works on contention, the greater the populous + density the easy and more profitable you will be in a shorter, cheaper manner. <-- this also allows greater cost savings to be passed down to consumers faster

A big ship takes forever to turn around. They should streamline their operations and respond quicker to the competition.

Was going to say the exact same thing. MTN has almost 3 times as many subscribers than this figure of R56.5m revenue. Also, this figure would make their global ARPU figure sit at roughly R0.33?
