MTN is 79c on promotion, Telkom Mobile Simsonke is 79c per minute with loads of extras like free SMS and free WiFi and free calls to Telkom numbers when you recharge. All for 79c and you don't have to jump through hoops. And if you are lucky enough to phone a fellow Simsonke member, the cost is 29c.

So, with no free airtime, SMS, WiFi, etc. Only the airtime you load - is MTN really cheaper than Telkom?

I agree, my wife and I are both on Simsonke, I recharged once a month (R100 for her and R50 for me) works out great. To think a few years ago my cellphone bill with MTN was around R900 to R1000.

I will never move back to MTN!

"Gulio" works for MTN and trolls every Cell C thread,but he doesn't have the balls to admit that he works for MTN.No wonder he sees it that way that Cell C bullied MTN since Cell C has scared the sch1t out of MTN(and him).

Be a real man "Gulio" and stop trolling Cell C threads pretending to be a consumer.You work for MTN,time to come out of the closet.

Thats actually a great idea since I do call my wife a lot I should save some cash,maybe Ill use simsonke on my second phone,R0.29 per minute is easy to live with!

I started of years ago as a student with a R30 contract from MTN and at the time it was the best deal,but every time I renewed throughout my 12 years with them I always found myself needing more and more contracts until eventually they dropped the free minutes contracts and started ripping us a new one with the Rand value anytime contracts which worked out to much less value.At that point in time I was spending just over R3000 rand per month on a single MTN contract and I had two.I switched to Cell C Straight up last year and my bill with the same usage started costing me just R1000 PER contract!

Keeping my 083 number on Cell C also proved to be very very seamless luckily as that was one of my concerns as its a business line also and the coverage and signal on Cell C has been as good as MTN for me.

The impression I get is that he is involved in the financial sector in some shape or form and simply is working from the premise that a free market is best and so letting corporate giants rule is better than regulatory entanglement without realizing that we have regulatory entanglement creating and holding up the giants and that the process of detanglement is one to be done with judicious circumspection

Go check his comments on every single Cell C related thread and you quickly realise he definitely has a lot invested in MTN if he is in the financial sector also . And yes you'll also realise from his posts that he is specifically pro MTN but in certain arguments it's convenient to throw in Vodacom because they are in a similar position in the market but there's no doubt he is heavily invested in MTN.

What is quite interesting though about this move from MTN is that it doesn't really aim at outpacing CellC or driving into the future - ubiquitous data. Instead it seems to be the objective to simply exploit vulnerabilities in CellC's position and exploit missteps by CellC in the past.

Do MTN and Vodacom seriously believe that they will muscle CellC out of the market? Oger might well be hostile to the prospects of pouring money to CellC absent favourable market conditions for CellC but look at the broader emerging market opportunities issue and CellC surviving for the next 6 months (on which there are no real prospects of them not succeeding) and the game changes.

The bottom line is that attrition by MTN and Vodacom (who haven't entered yet, but we really have no reason to believe that they wont be foolish enough to enter) might pose a constant threat and keep CellC in a state of containment but it costs them significantly more than what it costs any backer of CellC. If the CTRs remain posed to hold high asymmetry on market share with diminishing asymmetry between mobile and fixed line and include a costs basis in the work in then the strategy of strangling CellC is the height of stupidity and Oger would be well placed to spend minimally to cause their competitor groups spending a disproportionate amount of revenue in response (basically for Oger to spend 50 million to cause Vodafone tied Vodacom to loose 300 million and the MTN group to be inflicted with half a billion its well worth it for them).

CellC needs to look at ways to get there teeth squarely into the game and the CTRs issue is for CellCs future a bit of a side show but frankly if MTN want to hit them where it hurts they are likely to inflict pain but not death onto CellC
