Here is a speedtest I done with my two simcards in my HSDPA E220 modem connected with 3g only option. MTN connection would not even allow a full test through internetfrog.com test, so I stuck with numion.com.

It is important to note that MTN test only succeeded when there was a BURST of data that could go through. For some reason MTN connection has long dead times (30 seconds plus) followed by a quick burst of data transfer. So pathetic.

26 March 2007, numion.com speedtest
Vodacom @ 9:56pm
Download speed: 354.01 kbit/sec
upload speed: 56.73 kbit/sec
Latency: 1276ms

MTN @ 10:02pm
Download speed: 68.58 kbit/sec
Upload speed: 31.71 kbit/sec
Latency: 1220 milliseconds

BTW, this test was done using "internet" APN in both cases.

Peak hour slowdown

There seems to be marked slowdown during peak hours 8:00 to 09:30. I am in Northcliff, using HSDPA. At this point latency and interactivity make it almost impossible to work fluently. Do normal GSM calls impact on HSDPA? or is this data peak only?

From: http://www.internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/

Download: 128,240 bps
Upload: 27,928 bps
QOS: 31%
RTT: 376 ms
MaxPause: 1312 ms

I agree with previous poster. Connection is very bursty with long periods of zero activity.

Just remember our network peaks from 20:00 to about 22:00

Bottom line over customer satisfaction

Hi MTNDD

I appreciate the fact that the network peaks between certain hours. I would even be fine with the fact that the international connection is slower in this time. The problem is that the connection dies in totality for long periods, making it impossible to do anything that takes more than a few seconds.
I can not even access the speed test sites at times, nor my email.

I am paying for this service and expect MTN to be able to provide the capacity for me to use the service. It is a problem to me that a company that has a double digit billion rand profit is unable to provide me with the service I am paying for. Maybe MTN should invest more in their infrastructure and the satisfaction of their customers rather than to the bottom line.

I'm sitting here now (not in peak hours!) and I've just compared vodacom HSDPA speeds with mtn HSDPA on an E220.

A download from Microsoft Update averaged about 900kbps on each, peaking at 1.2Mbps on each. I suspect that these updates are cached locally, so don't test the international bandwidth.

Web surfing felt much snappier with VC.

BitTorrent showed the biggest difference: for the same torrent, VC was flying along at 24 Kb/sec, while MTN is struggling to hold 6 Kb/sec.

Thanks for the info - We'll look deeper into the problem and advise ASAP

WOW 10 minutes to get my reply screen

MTN Broadband I am afraid is terrible during peak hours. I can do zip. In fact I feel that my contract was a sham. Even if I can't get my money back, I am forced to take up another broadband provider, which does not drop to zero utillity value between 19:30 - 22:00 at night, which is when I need it most!!!

It took 10 minutes just for this replay edit screen to appear. I can understand a slowdown, but why is MTN promoting broadband like crazy when it is actually a dud and must be upsetting many customers ?!

I've been batteling with MTN since late last year...

I live in Raslouw in Centurion and I had lightning fast 3G/HSDPA. And then it got slower and slower and ever since late last year NO 3G AT ALL!!!! I was forced to use GPRS only...

I pay R999.00 per month for the laptop and a 1GIG package... They gave us a free gig for 3 months but I cant even use my one gig up because MTN is soooo sloooooowwwww!!!

MTN was here at my office and they themselves saw that the once great reception is now up to %&$@#!!!

They promised to follow up and let me know what they will do to help me to get my speeds back up again... needles to say... in true MTN style I never heard from them again...

I now pay a grand a month for GPRS!!!! And don't even try to get on the net in peak hours!!!! Seems to me that MXIT is taking up al the little bandwith that MTN has... But that's not a problem to MTN... They keep on screwing new customers every day into their worthless contracts for 2 bloody years!!!

If MTN's too busy I just pop my voda sim and guess what!!! FULL SIGNAL AND FAST SPEEDS!!!! Why can Vodacom cope and not MTN... To busy in other parts of Africa I suppose!!! My Contract expires end of November and I'm leaving forever!!!!

I can't wait for when they call me to upgrade!!! I will gooi them 'n lekker middelfinger!!!!

I am going to switch to VC prepaid, save money and actually get internet access!!!

Funny how MTN demands payment, but if they can't supply the service we still must pay and pay...

O yes never call 808!!! Are you guys trying to kill yourselves or what!!! Rather talk to your dogs... at least they listen though they don't understand. MTN doesn't listen or understand or even have a clue of 3G...

One more thing!!! They even overcharged me a few months ago with R360.00!!!! Shame....

MTN is theeee most disgraceful company in SA. I Never had a day's trouble with Telkom!!!!

MTN IS WORSE THAN TELKOM!!!!

I hate myself for signing up with MTN!!!!
