MTN shares slide on Iran concerns

I dont mean to be funny here, but what does the USA - Iran tension have to do with MTN?

the top 40 is up almost 200 today, hovering below 33000. if the above was indeed the issue, the top40 would reflect that

know what Im saying?

There could be another reason MTN shares are dipping a bit... Could be something to do with the $1 Billion they wanna spend in Nigeria. People dont like that kind of expenditure even if it is an "investment" when the whole world is a financial ticking time-bomb

From the article it seems like MTN has a huge subscriber base in Iran. 33mill in Iran out of 158mill worldwide.

Cause the MTN towers in Iran will be jammed and bombed to hell if it excalates too much (and the subscribers might be killed)...

^^ This. Iran is MTN's 2nd biggest market (by susbscriber numbers), and Iran has been a gold-mine for MTN. Few other international operators were interested in Iran, due to the political instability and strained international relations, but MTN took the risk, and won big time. If there investment in Iran is threatened, of course it will have a major impact on their share price.

MTN's biggest markets:

1. Nigeria: 40.5 million
2. Iran: 32.2 million
3. South Africa: 19.8 million
4. Ghana: 9.5 million

The US can't kill all the beautiful Iranian women :( *my gf is Iranian.

But they normally target the communication avenues first before going in. Makes sense that the shares are falling.
 
Go buy shares in Sasol or other oil companies not operating in Iran on big scale. They will shoot up if tensions in Iran escalates, a long with the oil prices and the petrol price.

Ah when people think the issue is so simple.

Lets leave aside the entire Israel issue (Iran declaring they must be destroyed etc), the fact of the matter is that all signs show that Iran is developing nuclear weapons, and should they achieve it could trigger a arms race with the other nation in the middle east could also then try to develop their own, since a nuclear capable Iran would seriously shift the balance towards Iran, and other nation like Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Muslims would like to prevent that, even if it means they would also have to pursue nuclear weapons.

And the next thing you know we have the entire middle east up in nuclear arms, then just imagined what all that uncertainty would do to the oil prices and other effect of such a situation.

Let's be realistic here.
Since 2001 the US has been 'targeting' Islamic oil producing nations, for whatever reason you want to believe.

Perhaps Iran has been building weapons for preventitive measures, self defense as Israel likes to call it.
Is there anything wrong with that? If I was Iran I would do the same.
Monkey boy as the media likes to call him, hasn't hurt a fly in the international community, what and why does the world think he will initiate a war? Even his threats as lame as they are are always misinterpreted.

Sad but true, beautiful country Iran, stunning women, Muslim/Christian/Jewish, I love it, would love to live there, if it still exists in a few years.
 
Very timely this nice reward for MTN's top execs... I bet they are now regretting the 3 year vesting period!

MTN has awarded its group president and CEO Sifiso Dabengwa 111 600 shares worth R15,9m. The shares vest in three years in accordance with the group’s share plan in terms of which certain performance targets must be met.

The shares were awarded at a share price of R142,12.

At the same time, the group’s chief financial officer, Nazir Patel, has been awarded R8,1m in shares, also vesting in three years’ time.

I Don't blame Iran,for years the US has been a big bully trying to "create" politicial stability in the middle east,bulldust.If redemption is what they seek and looking to put something back into the community then Africa is a great place to start.If i was the CEO of MTN i'd bbm obama and tell him kindly to sod off.

I agree that they may be building it as preventive measures since if you look at it this way. Libya -no nuclear weapons vs North Korea -have nuclear weapons, who's fate would you choose.

So any regime is safer from being brought down (by military invasion from outside the country) if it has nuclear weapons.

That doesn't change the fact that if Iran gets nuclear weapons it will only be a matter of time before other gulf states also get nuclear weapons as "preventitive measures". Just look at Pakistan developing nuclear weapons in response to India's nuclear program. And then there is the part about Iran funding Hezbollah and other terror organization, what if Iran decides to pass along a nuke to them that couldn't be traced back to Iran?

As for why would Iran initiate a war: well domestic pressure has been rising against the government (just look at last year's protest) and what better way to forge unity than by diverting attention to a outside foe to wage war on.
 
I think its a gross misconception of the world and media propaganda that Iran or any Arab country will use a nuclear weapon against Israel.
The Arab world and Muslim population at large respect the holy land now within Israeli borders, they wouldn't even risk it in my opinion.
Everyone should just put guns back into their holsters as it will never happen.
Even Iran wont trust hezbollah with a nuclear weapon.

BUT should Israel destroy the Islamic holy sites and Iran has nuclear weapons then Israel would need waterproof undies.

So I suspect the US have their own agenda.

Back on topic, do we drop our MTN shares yet?
