MTN Speed Test Results

Skeptik : You're blatantly ignoring the complexity of the cellular networks, the fact that the networks themselves are not ENTIRELY under the control of the operators, they do have to rely on Telkom for backhaul links.

As for them advertising speeds of 3.6 or 7.2(which no network as released in this country as of yet)... 99% of people wouldn't notice the difference between 1.8 or 3.6 or 7.2, PLUS they have a disclaimer that speeds are NOT guaranteed. I don't see why or how you have a problem with this.

As for OFCOM's thinking coming to this country.... don't hold your breath.

You are trying to see what speeds customers are getting --- not so? Then let the customers tell you .... certainly they NEVER get the speeds advertised by the network(s). That is where we diverge. You will find most of us have no interest in whether we needed to test for 10 minutes and divide the results to get an average.

If you like you can post a test 'how to' after this and ask your customers to do it. However you risk them finding out they're being duped by claims of 3.6.:eek:

I've got no problem discussing the reasons why maximum throughput is not achieved on most networks (do you get 100Mb/s on your LAN? Why not?), but that was not the topic of my post.

Do me a favour and measure the throughput you get on your 54Mb/s WiFi. What % of theoretical speed are you getting? Who are you going to blame?

The strength of my replies to you is directly proportional to your attempts to turn any discussion into a network bashing session. Especially when you try and derail a topic with this type of nonsense that has no relation to the post you're attacking:

On advertised speeds, you should many re-evaluate your statement. Or at least pass me the Vodacom ads claiming maximum speed.

I went to Incredible connection on Wednesday and bought a E220 HSDPA card for a friend of mine. We had a choice. The e220 or a new one that was 7.2mb compatible. I am not into technical stuff but the sales lady said that this one will work at 3.6 and this one at 7.2mb. At no time was it said that you will not see 3.6mb. You will be lucky to see 2.5mb. I am with Skeptik on this one. Most of the people that get an HSDPA card are under the impression that they will be getting the 3.6mb. It is like the 100 BMW comp and a lottery

Exactly, the honesty is missing. Why not change the speed claim to PEAK SPEEDS OF 1.8MB/S UNDER IDEAL CONDITIONS. AVERAGE SPEEDS OF 30MB/S WITH APPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT.

But, noooo, they want to behave like used car salesmen and hide the truth. That's when the bitterness starts and people feel duped. And quite rightly so.

Just a shame we don't have an OFFCOM to defend the customer. Soon the ads in the UK will have to state the average speed, not the peak one that we never see in normal use.

I'm not sure what Vodacom3g is doing on this thread anyway. If he spent half as much time worrying about his own network's inadequacies instead of counting the peas on MTN's plate, he would have a better product.:rolleyes:

The one's you had to withdraw. Published in Yebonews. In fact it claimed speed of 1.8Mbps, then changed it to 1.6 when nobody could ever get 1.8.

Now they've become even more subtle (again, why not just be honest). "HSDPA 3.6" where the 3.6 is the implied speed. "Fastest mobile broadband". Faster than what??? How can it be faster than MTN when Voda doesn't have 7.2 yet?? ///\\\

Almost full signal (4 out of 5bars)
MTN E220
1. Down : 1349kbps , Up : 58kbps , Ping : 343ms
2. Down : 1284kbps , Up : 59kbps , Ping : 328ms

By comparison, with Vodafone E220, VC sim, same place, also JHB server, also 4/5 signal :
1. Down : 855kbps , Up : 345kbps , Ping : 145ms
2. Down : 942kbps , Up : 352kbps , Ping : 143ms

At this position I was, VC not as fast down, but BIG diff in UP and ping.
At home (in Montana, Pta) I only have 3/5 signal on VC but get >1500kbps down most times, also with similar upload, and pings.
I wonder how many guys have actually seen HSUPA uploads on MTN, or 'decent' 3.6 Mbps (or 7.2mbps! :eek:) speeds?

Since no ADSL in this area (Lanseria) my hope was on Wimax as alternative to diginet leased line... sadly none of this either, so MTN is currently only option....
The tests above was about a km from the office, but the VC signal (for decent upload) dies quickly from there to the office.

At times I get a quicker ping to GP than I do to CT and I am always 1Mbps less than the 1.8Mbps (that said having been in the bandwidth business I will not complain)

It would be nice though to not get the 1.5Mbps at 4am in the morning when all the cells / timeslots on the tower are giving me all the speeds but ja , this upload speeds is a bit annoying but then I've ranted on this for ages (would love to get this speeds during the day when it is needed most)

I'd still love to know if the old Citec crew was retained when MTN bought in and changed it to MTN NS.

Bandwidth management and backhaul links are always an issue but for the R379 per month for the 2 gigs and in the 8 out of 10 areas that I boot up and use HSDPA and what not I am not complaining .... yet.

I noticed in the article published (blue) with the result they had on the other side the speeds had to be "coaxed" by downloading multiple applications at the same time, perhaps try that and let us know what results you obtain?
 
point me to a locally hosted website with 5 items of 5 megs each , blank files created via win XP command line and i'll be happy to test ( don't you have HSDPA as well by the way )

command at dos prompt is fsutil file createnew c:\testfile5meg.txt 5120000 and upload to a webserver and then pass me the url to test and report speeds.

I normally will use a FTP tool and run 5 concurrent downloads from a site like ftp.saix.net or ftp.is.co.za.

I then check the download speed with DU Meter, or similar.
