MTN Speed Test Results

Some more results from the Harrington Street tower (416C/HARRINGTON STREET) in central Cape Town, tests started around 19:00 using a Huawei E220 with the 7.2Mbps-enabled MTN firmware version 11.117.03.00.67:

The next part of the test consisted of firing up 4 simultaneous downloads; Firefox 2.0.0.12 from firefox.com, XP SP3 (release candidate) from microsoft.com, AVG updates from grisoft.com and the E620 firmware from mtn.co.za. After running for about a minute the peak speeds were read from E620 Tool (screenshot here).

Download: peak 2090kbps, 10s average 1919kbps
Upload: peak 379kbps, 10s average 266kbps

Notes: The results from speedtest.net Cape Town are lower than expected, considering I was in Cape Town; either their server cannot handle the load or MTN's traffic is all routed through JHB.
The peak speeds reported E620 Tool are actually 2s averages.
The upload speeds reported by E620 Tool include the best of all the speedtest.net tests.
The 10s average upload speed can be ignored as none of the speedtest.net uploads lasted for more than 10s.

Congratulations! U must be one of the select few who are able to upload faster than 64kbps on MTN!
Could it be the firmware that allows the faster upload, but then why does the modem upload faster with VC sim?
Where can I get the E220 firmware upgrade? I checked MTN website, they only got the E620's firmware upgrade

It's not the firmware, it's the tower I'm connected to.

The download listed as "driver" under E220 includes a firmware update and a dashboard update, it's about 17MB in total.
 
cool thanx, I'll get the 'firmware'driver...
odd naming of the firmware, why not just call it firmware too, but then so too is odd making the CapeTown towers fast, and routing the traffic thru Joburg :D
They should've started the upgrading in Jhb! <jelous>

I stay 6 kms from the head office that has full 3.6mbps hsdpa signal and I struggle to get gprs or make calls:rolleyes:
Signal is awesome in Sharonlea though,next time im at my cousins place il do a test.

If you live in Cape Town and have a need for a serious signal boost on 2G/3G/WiFi/WiMax (to get those high download speeds), you ought to contact DPCapeTown.

He's the man with all the goodies ;)
