MTN status on eSIM, VoLTE (iPhone) and WifiCalling

How long does it take to adopt a technology that’s been out for years?

and when I read Huaweis technical spec on WiFi calling/VoWifi it mentions “any ISP” so why are we saying only specific ISP? I thought as long as they can route the IP packet to the internet to get to MTNs servers it will work?

What device/phone are you using?
Who is the ISP that your wifi runs through?

The service hasn't officially launched.
What we do know:
1. Most Android phones work.
2. iOS devices arent supported yet.
3. Not all ISP's are supported for VoWifi.
VoWifi is activated by the mobile provider. The whole idea of VoWifi is that you connect to your network provider from anywhere in the world, regardless of which WiFi provider used i.e. coffee shops, malls, hotels etc,

MTN just confirmed to me that they have not released this functionality.

I have tested with Android 4 phones: Huawei Mate 20. Huawei P20 Pro, Samsung Note 9 and a Samsung A2 Core.

My Cell C prepaid SIM has VoWiFi working in all these devices.

Not all phones support VoWiFi but most modern ones do.

In the UK and Spain VoWiFi is reserved for postpaid and not available to prepaid.

For now my experiment with MTN is over. I will take another look if they decide to release this functionality, like Cell C.

Honestly if you check my posts on the matter it's hit and miss with their VOWIFI service.

Your best bet is get a prepaid SIM to test or ask any buddies on mtn come see if it works also note not all phones are supported and the list that have it's so outdated diff even bother asking them
I purchased a starter pack to test. It's not working and they actually confirm it is not available.

Not arguing how vowifi should work theoretically, and I fully agree with you there.
However, I was just pointing out what has been discovered in this thread regarding MTN's implementation so far.

As mentioned, we have seen that only certain ISP's work, and you haven't mentioned which ISP's you tested on.
When im on Cell C ISP(Vumatel fibre), I get vowifi on MTN and Cell C.
When im on WebSquad ISP(Vumatel fibre), I only get vowifi on Cell C and not MTN.

I think Cell C mobile, Vodacom Mobile also work as there have been tests done via mobile hotspots.

What the aim is for vowifi and what is actually the case is different, it doesn't work for all ISPs for MTN and this has been confirmed.

Not arguing how it should work, just repeating what anecdotal evidence has been published in this thread.

Ya if it s not in the script they cant asnwer
I'm using Mind The Speed fibre.

If the MTN VoWiFi service is so picky about which internet provider is connecting to it, which seems incredulous, it's clearly not ready for market.

Thanks for your feedback.
That not surprising - doesnt work for me on MTS , works on others though
Mts are busy testing to see what the issue is.
Who is the FNO?

Weird. Maybe they are just keeping the testing to a select few networks or they have some weird network requirements.

It also works on Webafrica, Afrihost on Openserve as well as Rain 5G.

MTN wifi calling doesn't work on Mweb's network either, at least not through Openserve Fibre.

Mweb not working is very surprising.
I was theorizing that most of the big adsl isp's were supported: afrihost, webafrica, telkom, vox
And that the new fibre providers didnt work: cool ideas, mind the speed, websquad
But Cell C and Mweb have ruined my theory because Cell C didnt do ADSL and Mweb did do ADSL.
Rain was a network that didnt work in the beginning but was added at some point by MTN.

Which phones are being used?

I have Webafrica on Vuma with an Samsung S8, works perfectly.

Nothing on my wife's IPhone 7.

Only Android is supported as per the one my broadband article. Too lazy to find it.
No idea when iPhone will be supported.

I have a Samsung note 10 dual SIM and have tested both MTN and cellc that work. But again depends on ISP.

Had a carrier update this morning but didnt notice any new features

MTN 45.1
