MTN Steppa smartphone for R499

Single-core processor and Gingerbread are major fails. They basically make it useless. There are better phones to spend that money on.

I have a single core phone, was released with GB, upgraded to ICS and now I'm running CM10 (Jelly bean 4.1) on it. Sony Ericsson Arc S. R500 is a great price for the phone and I'm sure it'll be very popular - even for people that just want a HSDPA modem for cheap and doesn't care about super speeds that much.

I wish Google could ban any new phones from running Gingerbread, force these companies to put some effort into it.

its a nice step forward I agree.

and Gingerbread is what will kill this phone but not because it was bad or unstable or old. well sort of not because its old.

so you are one of the poor saps stuck with a BB and hating it, but you "need" bbm, so you buy this knowing you can install BBM for andrid on it.

WRONG

BBM needs at least 4.2.2 to be installed. its a bad app I know and people should just use one of the other one million chat applications out there, BUT people still want BBM, so they will try and be disappointed, then they will try root and flash to get a new rom that will run BBM, and that will just brick the phone 90% of the time because there will not be a walkthrough for an MTN branded phone.

but hey, at least the Cheapest Android on the market is actually a budget phone and not last years flagship wearing CROCS and calling its self a budget phone. I'm looking at you mister 5c[rap]

I don't have 4.2.2 and I have BBM

For that price its a good phone but Gingerbread....

For that price it's a fantastic phone!
Any application for which you wanted to use an Android device; there's now one for R499.
Think of:
A touchsceen wifi remote control cheaper than any equivalent.
A mobile monitor for your home security / nanny cams.
An in-car GPS

True. I think for R499 its going to do well in SA.

Why are you guys complaining about specs?

The people who's going to buy this won't give a schit about specs. For instance I'm now seriously considering this for my 7 year old.

It competes well against non-smartphones selling at the same or higher price.

I agree that the OS is pretty old and the screen rez is low etc BUT I would never try compare it to my HTC One especially if we are buying it for my Fiancees ten year old daughter. So for R500 who can really complain??

I've known about this phone for 2 weeks and other than a quick spec sheet I know nothing about it. What irritates me is they haven't sent this to any technical writers for review. It looks like a pretty decent phone for its price although an extra R200 will get you a Samsung Star/Pocket with Android 4.x.x on it so at best I will call it an improvement, not revolution to the market.
The real question, is it worth the R500 asking price? Without a quality review on the product you could easily be buying an incompatible glitchy lemon that's going to break down in a a year. Not really fair to the consumers MTN, you should've provided mybb and other technical writers with a test device before it went to market.

Where can I buy one? Would like to test it.

Are you willing to write a review on this phone ?

From the spec etc and price point it looks good, but who knows.. it could be as buggy as hell. So a review will be nice :)

[BBM] its a bad app I know
Compared to whatsapp its 100% better. Mainly because the messages aren't randomly delayed for hours. Nothing like messaging a colleague "Traffic on road XYZ"...and 6 hours later she gets the fckin message and wants to know WTF I'm talking about. Other times it updates real-time. Piece of sht app. I've taken to just SMSing people if I need something done without BS.

Wish they'd just launch BBM on all platforms and call it a day.

Also...cheap androids make for fantastic alarm clocks.
