MTN Steppa smartphone for R499

Thanks. If it is true that Steppa has 512MB RAM, I would chose Steppa. Some WEb site indicate it is 256MB. GPS comes handy at times, also 2Mp camera. Choice is also between quality Qualcom chipset, but non-brand phone manufacturer (Steppa) and Huawei brand, but own their own low cost chipset.

There are 2 models being sold @ the Edcon stores[Jet,Edgars,CNa,Legit,Red Square,Boardmans]

MTN sells the one with 1 wcdma simcard slot and it comes with a 4GB memory card in the box. The other one is on Telkom Mobile and is the dual sim version with the exact same specs but has 1 wcdma sim slot and 1 gsm only sim slot.

I bought the 1 on MTN cause they did not have stock of the one with Telkom Mobile. Very impressed with this phone. It even has the Huawei TS9 plug for a external antenna if you remove the back cover.

Now I actually want to compare cause its a win lose situation....

MTN Steppa = R499
Huawei Y220 =R549

*MTN steppa 512mb RAM where the Huawei only has 256mb
*MTN steppa has a 1Ghz single core CPU where the Huawei has a 1Ghz dual core cpu
*MTN steppa supports both 900Mhz and 2100Mhz HSDPA 7.2Mbps and the Huawei supports 21.5Mbps HSDPA on both 900Mhz and 2100Mhz
*MTN steppa has A-GPS where the Huawei does not have A-GPS

As you can see its a win some lose some with a price difference of just R50 its hard to make a decision :confused:

This (Y220) is now selling for R450, my son just bought one...not sure where but prob at Jet / Pep...
 
My S2 packed up after 14 months. Thank you Samsung.

Got a Steppa in its place. I can buy 14 of them as replacements for S3 or S4. It does all I want as well as I want.

Very happy after one month. (Not a geek, just a plain user).

The Y220

Its R50 cheaper and is generally a better phone. Comes with a 7 day replacement warranty and 2 year warranty. Not sure about the steppa but I feel the Y220 is a better option. I read here the steppa has ads built into the rom. The Y220 does not have such a thing.
 
I bumping this thread cause BBM is now available for device on a android version less than 4.0.

I installed BBM on my Huawei Y220 and it works very well. Pretty cool considering the phone only costs R449 now.
 
I think BBM will become more popular with whatsapp having been bought by Facebook.

Good on the devs for making it compatible for lower spec phones.

Yeah I think it can boost android now since BBM can be used on phones retailing for R449 and R499. Not bad at all. I think BBM will gain some momentum in android os too now.
 
Y220 has HSPA+ modem (21Mbps) and WiFi hotspot. Cheaper than any battery powered WiFi/HSPA+ router.
RAM is only serious limitation for normal use.

Yeah its apitty since they gave it a dual core cpu so its very very snappy. The ram is limiting the number of apps you can run at the same time which is a real pity.
 
Can anyone confirm whether the Y220 sold in SA will also work at its full performance when travelling in the States? Some of our 3G devices only work at 2G for data there, because the USA uses different frequencies, which are not always included in our phones or modems. [I did already ask this in the Cellphones thread, but without any response].

I recently travelled in the USA with two different data modems from SA -- and neither would run faster than 2G there, which was a pain.

Yes on 2G, but not on 3G, as it covers only two bands 900/2100MHz in 3G mode. But good for traveling to Europe.
It shoudn't be a problem in US, as WiFi hotspots are very popular.
 
Okay I bought the y220 for my mother, looks good for the price.
Edit: just tried it, really snappy and responsive, impressive!
