MTN subscriber numbers decline; RICA blamed

If anyone left because of RICA, it would mean it was a simcard they didn't plan on using anymore, or they didn't want to register it because it was used for illegal activities. This would be the case for Vodacom as well then.

Would be interesting to hear if Vodacom also reports a drop in SA subscribers. If not, then it is conclusive proof that MTN's bad service is to blame.
I am also very disappointed with MTN and will jump ship when my contracts end.

Perhaps they should look at their shocking service, faulty data counters and faulty billing systems before pointing fingers at Rica.

I am seeing last months calls being billed at full price while I had free minutes remaining at the end of last month, and still have minutes this month. MTN's response is you can only complain once you have been billed and paid them.

+1 on that! when my contract end, I will be one of them jumping ship, just out of principal.

+1 to both of you...

I've already cancelled my MTN contract and switched to prepaid. I will be porting to Vodacom, or hopefully Telkom Mobile if they launch soon...

To RPM and the staff writers - don't you think that all of the posts above warrant an article on of its own on myBB???

I'm reallly sick of MTN giving us crappy service. Out of all the posts above, not a single person had anything good to say about MTN. Read the MTN forums, and all you hear is complaints. And the worst thing about all the complaints is that they don't get resolved, or they get resolved after weeks and months of frustration and hell. At least with Vodacom the complaints seem to get resolved.

Some bad publicity is warranted here. MTN refuse to help us, they just don't care. MyBB - please stand for the consumer!

Ah yes I also ported back to Vodacom from MTN.

MTN the only company that blamed me for their bad reception and lost SMS's!

Good riddance!

MTN please rate your service for 2009 from 1-10.i also don't understand why MTN blames disconnections on RICA,existing subscribers are supposed to be disconnected only 2011...RICA only affects new connections at the moment..MTN simply failed to retain over 1mil subscribers and the bosses dont think the subscribers are fleeing the poor service...maybe the SA marked is being ignored in favour of Nigeria and Iran.

Moronic Telephone Nitwits.

I was your customer for 12 years. Said goodbye in January and guess what? I don't miss you at all.

Here's another broadcast to the cellphone industry and the guvvermunt: I WILL NOT RICA. Please cut me off because I actually don't really need a cellphone. I lived without one for most of my life and I can do it again.

I will sell my E90 phone to the highest bidder when they cut me off and buy an iPod or something that brings me pleasure.

Well i've cancelled a contract with MTN 2 months ago, can't wait to get out of the existing one i still have .

This had nothing to do with RICA, just the last straw for me. MTN has been a frustrating crappy mess for the last year. Bad billing, Bad service, Bad network, Bad Pricing and Offerings, Bad Press, Bad Marketing, Bad PR, Bad Business Negotiations , Bad Bad Bad.

I'm not surprised with all the "bad", that MTN can't even process RICA forms out of a paperbag with a bazooka and a katana.

Did MTN actually do anything good this last year? If they're not ripping us off with illegal lottery competitions, they're overbilling while having constant "technical difficulties" ...

BAD-bad service in South Africa seems to reap MTN just rewards - NOT Rica!!
I battled with inept and ignorant MTN staff for a whole month to get my corporate-deal-contract upgraded - they just do not bother to respond or keep their promises, never mind knowing their work!!

And i decide to go check my usage/bill on MTNSP/MTNActive and was welcomed with

" Sorry for the inconvenience, we are down for routine maintenance. "

This is MTN for ya. Might as well pick a new slogan.

I'm SHOCKED by this article... 16.419 million morons (MTN subscribers) in South Africa? No wonder we're heading to the bottom of the long drop...

Rica is No Issue @ ALL. Its MICA thats the problem

I Cancelled 3 Lines with MTN within the last 6 months and 2 more to be cancelled by December and also informed them of this.

Tonight i sent my letters to the DOC , Icasa and PCPC

to inform them rica is alive and well and kicking and working well, and not to accept any excuses from MTN.

I submitted my reasons for cancelling my lines with MTN.

Can all you guys do this as well.

We need to submit answers to the big boys before MTN & Vodacom start their Bull-Stories.

Both MTN and Vodacom made it clear that, if termination rates were to fall, they were going to have to disconnect subscribers. They would more or less have to in order to keep their ARPU up. It seems they're pre-empting the changes already - they've probably just changed some minor reporting principle to get rid of some ghost suscribers (or real subscribers that never make calls - zero ARPU). We can probably expect the same from Vodacom - it's even easier for them, because they have many more ghost suscribers.

i have been with mtn for more than ten years and never had najor troubles with them, it does not mean i like them but i don't like vodacom either.

ps. i might do the rica crap next year when my contracts is due for renewal, don't like it, i mean they already got all my #@$@! details.

.

Right. I don't see the whole problem with RICA.

Problem with RICA:

See hoop? Here boy, jump through hoop. Here's your lovely cellphone sim card.

I really want to see them cut off their revenue stream. There will be millions of cellphone users in the country who will give them the finger too. How many of them who live in shacks have utility bills? Hello?

I will not RICA. They can have their sim card.

I think you mis-understand. The operators were against RICA too. If they could have it their way, they would flush RICA down the drain. RICA is a South African law, enforced by gauvament.

RICA does cost the operators, no doubt. They had to modify their software sytems (billing, administration, network, etc) to comply, and RICA also slow's down the growth in prepaid scubscribers. It shouldn't affect contract subscriber growth at all.

Now MTN is lying saying that it lost 800,000+ subscribers because of RICA. This is a complete lie. They only have to cut off non-RICA'd SIM cards about 18 months from now. The worst effect that RICA would have on them immediately is for their subscriber growth to drop to 0. However, a loss of close to a million subscribers??!? Something is really fishy here.

Either MTN subscribers are leaving in droves, or MTN has pre-emptively disconnected a large portion of its dormant/loss-making subscribers. My guess is that it is a combination of both, though I wouldn't be surpirsed if it was all attributed to the former.

This was exactly what I was thinking too. I think that they did a major cleanup of innactive subs at a time where they could blame something like RICA. They will only start their flush of non_RICA compliant subscribers in over a year so their claim to subscriber base drop as a result of the implimentation of RICA, in my eyes, is total BS. They are BS artists and deserve to crash and burn. I will buy out of my contract and RICA my pre-paid vodacom sim.

I am done with MTN.

MTN's present contract offerings are rubbish. Why would I want to pay for a contract when prepaid is cheaper and more flexible? So yeah, MTN can go suck a nice fat one. I'm out as soon as my contract expires... in 3 months.
