Do you think MTN’s Unlimited service adds value to the mobile broadband market?

Oh no, not again. It's just another con.

Just for a minute there, I thought MTN had done something radical, but all they've done is use their marketing machine to redefine "uncapped" to mean "throttled" via the devious device of "fair use".

The likelihood of any one of the mobile operators launching an actual uncapped 3G service remains very close to zero, based purely on the limitations of the technology.

And so the only difference is they going to give you a modem that looks like a soccer ball (to add to your collection). Wow

Surely somebody has to stop these idiots using the words uncapped......i mean every ISP and its dog is using that now to catch people that dont know better....
If i see someone advertising UNCAPPED, then surely it has to mean Uncapped... and well a decent fair usage poilcy if it is just that should be in the region of 50GB a month...
This package is nothing more that a bigger CAP!!

It does not add value and is expensive. There are other service providers who dont lock you down for 24 months.

The drawback on MTN’s Unlimited offerings is obviously performance, but considering that it is theoretically possible to upload and download around 80 GB per month on a symmetrical 128 Kbps connection the price per GB becomes attractive (around R10 per GB for the MTN Unlimited Lite service).

It's also 'theoretically possible' that I'm going to sleep with a dozen different hot bikini models this year, but let's face it, it's not going to happen. In reality the best you'll probably be lucky to get around 30GB a month if you go out of your way to push this connection to the max, which would effectively be around R25/GB, which I think is a cr-p price.

Hey guys

I'm launching a new UNCAPPED adsl service for only R50 a month!

*lifetime contract
*fair usage policy of 1mb with speeds throttled to 1kbit/s thereafter
*we will pwn j00

By that ratio you should sleep with about 4 hot bikini models this year... Nice ;)

Meh. Someone should send a definition of the words "uncapped" and "broadband" to all the telecoms companies in SA.

Afrihost comes to mind quickly. Advertising UNCAPPED everywhere, but after 60GB, they start closing the tap/cap.

Tick, you should aim higher. What's this negative attitude?

so 128kbps is then the 'max' you will get, if you are right under the tower once again? so more around the 64kbps mark on a good day.... any person who downloads 80gb in 1 month over a 128kbps '3g' connection should be given an award or something for dedication.

I agree its a first step, but a really small step :P

Couldn't agree with you more.

i`ve been watching the post for the past few months on mtn`s R50 a day. it sucks! i downloaded more than 150mb it was about 350mb. then i couldn`t went on the internet after that. no connection. the next day i bought another R50 data bundle all day access. i started using it from 17h45 and by 20h00 i couldn`t surf or open up a page. so 128kb/s, what crap! i logged a call. no-ne could explain why i couldn`t surf. its in the forum that i discover about 128kb/s.then they will comeback to me in 24 hours. i call back in 24hours, nothing yet, must call back in 72hours. i call back nothng has been done and the consultant will forward a email to his supervisor , i didn`t recieved a ref#, although i ask them for one. until today no feedback. their customer service sucks! so where is the value. vodacom still the best. i`m willing to pay R50 a day for internet, but don`t cut me off. in any case 128kb/s is not 3g speed. WHERE IS THE VALUE!!!!!!!!
