MTN Unrestricted APN

Does this MTNVPN also allow for SIP?

Cause i have a VOIP phone at home, recently switched to an MTN SIM and it can no longer connect to the provider. If I remove the MTN SIM and stick a Rain one in it, VOIP connects immediately. Same router, same switch, same settings - literally just changing SIM cards from one to the other, when the MTN SIM is in the VOIP cannot connect it times-out.

I sent my details through to [email protected] and got a response stating; "Kindly note MTN does not have the unrestricted APN any longer , there is currently no service as of yet to replace it ."

Alas I wish I read this thread before taking the 1TB Data contract

Been struggling from last week to get MTN to put me on a NAT Type 2 unrestricted network via their own APN (mtnvpn). Most don't know what I'm talking about and finally got an email from the customer support saying that they don't offer it anymore. I had a MTN fixed wireless data contract with Afrihost and those SIMs are on the unrestricted NAT type 2, hence I assumed MTN didn't have restricted NAT issues.

Does anyone know what's the penalty fee for maybe downgrading it to lower package? I think that's all I can do now and get a separate Afrihost Fixed LTE sim from Afrihost for gaming.

As long as there is no device, then I believe the penalty for cancellation is 1 month fee

They didnt retire that APN as we use it and it works.

Bring the SIM to an MTN store maybe they can test it.
I managed to speak to a technical person at MTN and this is what their response was.

Hello Kyle, it seems as if your package doesn't allow for the business broadband apn to be provisioned. These are package dependent.

And no i cannot upgrade it to broadband so MTN is practically screwing over anyone who takes this contract for gaming

I agree. They've gotten back to me regarding cancellation.

"Your request was escalated to our cancellations/retention team for processing.

Please note that all contract cancellation requests require a 20 business days' notice.

They will email you as soon to provide the early termination charge."

Sadly i even got my business sales guy to speak to everyone he knew at their offices and one of them reset my apn and told him they dont understand the issue since on their side it shows its unrestricted.

Btw did you take a router from mtn? As the only thing i did not try was use a router from mtn

I'm using a Huawei B618 which is a CAT11 router. I doubt changing the router will help. It's the APN that we need to change that would give us access to the unrestricted NAT type 2 network.

They seem to be happy to lose customers tho

I've opted to cancel. They sent me a quote of 2k to cancel. The quote says they will debit cancellation fee if I give the go ahead. The consultant however has asked me to EFT. I don't want to EFT and then get s shock next month that they debited the cancellation fee.

Anyone successfully migrated to a cheaper contract? I called the call centre and they said I need to go to the MTN Store. I went to the MTN Store and they said that since I signed up via a call centre only they can do the migration. Any advice will be appreciated.

You can downward migrate, however you would be charged a migration fee.
Dial 135 and speak to an operator regarding this, they should be able to get it done.

I just called mtn now and spoke to a few people. I have 2 business contract sims, and Got told the same thing :(. Apparently mtnvpn apn was decommissioned last year (2020) and there is no replacement service available. It's only available to customers that already had it activated prior to it being decommissioned.

I asked the consultant to escalate the matter to a supervisor as there was no communication sent to us (customers), apparently it was only circulated to staff (in 2020).

Any changes to this? :cautious:
Yes - fewer and fewer people are having this VPN as people are upgrading ;)

On a serious note though, there are too many variables when it comes to offer this service, majority of people I've engaged with use a VPN like Nord, either for piracy or to spoof their location and pick up American Netflix, for instance.

Sorry to resurrect this.

I'm trying to set up OpenVPN to be able to connect from my phone (on MTN) to my home network. I have a static IP at home on FTTH (it's open, I'm able to connect to it using other services), but the VPN seems to fail.

I don't want to HOST a VPN from an MTN sim, I just want to connect to an existing one from my MTN sim.

Is the MTNVPN apn previously discussed here the answer? Or am I still missing something?
