MTN's "uncapped" broadband a con?

I give this offering in its current form 2 months before it disappears...

MTN must think the SA public are utter morons. What an insult!

For the asking price a tiered approach to speed throttling would have been received much more favourably, say:

0 -3GBs = full speed, 14.4 or whatever
3-5GBs = 7.2GBs
5-10GBs = 3.6GBs
10-15GBs = 1.8GBs
15GBs+ = 512kbsp...

and maybe:
30GBs+ = 256kbsp...

Just a thought... but I doubt they could successfully implement this, based on their billing issues...

or just give us 20GB at whatever speed for R749

wonder when FIFA is going to come down on them for calling it the e2010

oh is it the other way round. was it Vodacom that was accused of ambush marketing?

on topic, anything with thresholds should never be called uncapped. that is not to say uncapped can't have shaping of things like p2p.

I wonder who is their marketing ass***e. He should be fired the Monkey.

Well, Internet Solutions has done this for a LONG time - selling it's "Uncapped Express" accounts, which is also throttled when you used your "allowed" bandwidth. Although it's called a "rolling period", this to me, also do not quite qualify as Uncapped.

With MTN, it's like everyone agrees on - they sell you a 3GB / 10GB package, not an Uncapped package. This is really expensive, give or take the speed, still VERY expensive for S.A.! These are packages that won't sell... unless someone don't know any better...

I don't know how much 30GB 3G will cost but I bet its a lot, if you are a downloader and don't have ADSL coverage and have patience this is certainyl worth it for a certain niche. So no, its not a 3GB product if you can probably do 30GB a month...

I discussed data options with an assistant at a MTN shop the other day and of course we end up discussing MTN's offer: R50 for a day of uncapped internet. Then this other assistant chips in and he told me that it is not really a great deal. So I asked him to explain why he says so. Then he tells me how they put you on such a slow line for that day that if you can download 1GB in that day, you are lucky. No deal for me. Thanks. It might sound attractive, but then only to those people in the add who do not even know what a gigabyte is... :P

RipOFF

I currently Live in Ireland, and have a 20mb uncontended broadband line. It is uncapped, so If I could or were so inclined, I could download 100Gb without penalty. The price for this service is €49 per month incl all relevant taxes. This equates to R468 at todays exchange rate. If this is possible in a country where the total population is only 3.5 million, how is it possible that S.A cannot do it at this price with a population of over 10 times this size? Someone is profiteering in a completely immoral way.

Its apartheid's fault!

GregC, we have the same here - I pay £49 (R550) and I can do more than 300GB per month without penalty. If I had enough stuff to download I am sure I would go beyond that with no problems at all.

Hear ye! hear ye! A cheap alternative to MTN uncapped !

Telkom ISDN Line rental : R231.36
M-Web ISDN 128k Access : R275.00

Total : R506.36

Yep! Same speed, cheaper price !
Can you access your ISDN account at dinner at your favourite restaurant?
Or even while away on business.
You sir have provided the stupidest arguement yet.

MTN and the likes of is **** and they lie to people and think people will fall for their crap. I have been fighting with MTN now for months over their so called DATA accounts.
not so long time ago they came out with this R50 a day 24 hour UNCAPPED. what a load of horse DOO DOO. i got it and 30 min into it and 130mb it stopped. not slowed down to a trickle but BANG stopped. i called em and they gave me that crap of fair usage. Hog wash. Fair user usage my ass. i told um uncapped means just that uncapped on uncapped = 130mb. The problem here is THEY ALL get away with it and the worst part is we let em. ITS corporate mind f*&^. they do what they want cause they say thats what we want so we believe em. all over the world they laugh at our poor piss willy connections. As customers we have just as much pull as what corporations have. In fact they are there because we need stuff and they provide us with it. without the need well they just suck thumb. When my friend in the UK told me about his 20mb uncapped line i wanted to puke. Telkom charges R400 for a mere 4mb line. give me a break.
