MultiChoice considering job cuts as DStv struggles

Let 'em go out of business. The only thing that's still making them somewhat relevant is their death grip on the sports channels. Once they lose that... Good night nurse, it's lights out time.

Up to 200 jobs could be affected, according to a source.

Improvements in technology in their industry must surely mean some jobs will become redundant? If not, blaming loss of subscribers on Netflix or similar is just sour grapes. They have enjoyed a monopoly and failure to innovate and/or evolve is on them alone.

Absolutely no sympathy.

Sport is also the only aspect of their offering that remains profitable.

If they dumped the satellite transponders and went for 100% streaming, it might be viable. Problem is the lack of infrastructure

Reduce the number of channels that have a small viewership, same with all the sport channels.

Remember when we used to have mnet and just one supersport channel and how it used to become 2 supersport channels on Saturdays? That alone is worth R400 for me.
Probably only you and a few other people who hasn't figured out how the internet works jet. That's why they're having problems.

That is the only thing that keeps the premium subscribers on their books, but all good things eventually come to an end.

You mean those annoying adds whereby Dstv promotes itself on their own platform and thereby interrupting your show will not be able to repeat content about how they're creating jobs? Sounds good.

Pick your own channels and watch what you what when you want; one could consider it. It is so yesteryear to be told when you *may* watch something and then be suffocated by adds and repeats...

I called it a decade ago. I never owned one BluRay player and stopped using DVDs in 2008. It was all downloaded.

Only a matter of time.

There's a power struggle at home since Netflix saturated our airwaves with all these new shows. Not to mention the other networks.
Dad is now watching less sport.

He lost.

who wants to watch sport these days? The Boks are getting caned by every decent team in the world. Premier League football is available on compact.

I've seen this type of situation in big business before. All that matters to them is scale, and increasing the number by whatever % is demanded by the board every year. And it starts out fine - no competition, and 1 product (MNET!). Then eventually everyone has that product, so you make another product, and another etc etc. You lose sight of whats happening in the rest of the world because you're so focussed on getting your % by getting your customers to a) buy some rental movies for a quick R20 b) pay a monthly fee so you can record stuff on your perfectly capable decoder (like wtf) c) pay this other fee so you can watch the same **** through our new app (they scrapped this if you're premium). Multichoice have been in this cycle for so long, and the guys running this have been doing it for such a long time, that changing business model for them is going to be epically difficult. They think innovation is another TV package and a slightly different price point...

Who's going to capitalise on the FTTH revolution best in SA?

They need to sort out their streaming if they want to compete with Netflix. Even with a 1GB fibre I try to stream DSTV Now and it looks like lego blocks on the screen.

It's really hard to match their sports package anywhere in the world, unless you shell out a heap of cash.

Time they got rid of the "Brothers" that jobs where created for and who did bugger all for the bottom line ...

Amazon are starting to stream some sporting events. It's a matter of time before others also go pay-to-view.
Good news. I'm a premium subscriber with MultiChoice but I only use it for the sports and a few documentaries. I wanted to cancel my subscription, I've been a subscriber since the 80's, so MultiChoice reduced my subscription to R700 pm. Still not good value, but better than most other premium subscribers. One of these days I'll be off their books.

DSTV could save far more money by cutting out the garbage that is 99% of their channel content.

If you're looking for streaming options, look at Hulu with Live TV.

For around $40 a month you get about 50 US channels, including ESPN and ESPN2. You get your HD formula 1 (without ads) and lots of other things too.
