MultiChoice price increase due to 'operating costs'

How quickly do you think you would spend 500 in one weekend :)

I'm thinking i could easily whack 250 bucks just watching a game of cricket.

I would not have dstv either if it was not for the sport but i must admit i am happy to pay my 500 bucks a month for supersport.

It keeps me out the pubs which means i drink less, i spend less watching my favourite sport and the amount of sport they cover is absolutely staggering. I would say i easily watch 10-15 hours of sport a weekend. All i do now is a skip a weekend of drinking and my dstv bill is covered. If i think about how much sport i watch a month 500 bucks seem 100%, maybe for those who do not watch sport 500 bucks seems like a lot and a waste but for the sport fundies supersport is simply amazing and worth every penny.

Case in point! Hopefully ODM offer services to the other spectrum. Then no one will be unhappy. We'll all have a suitable package to subscribe to.

DSTV is actually a pretty good service and we can compare it with some of the best services in Europe. Pricing is also not as over the top as it is made out to be. I'm sure with all the changes in the industry, their operating costs did increase. I would love to see the competition have a similar service for a cheaper monthly subscription, but I don't think that is possible. People don't mind paying for other stuff, but when it comes to television... Just cancel your subscription if you don't like the service... I know, I know... you only have it for the sport.

I don't think it is expensive, for my 500 bucks a month i get a lot channels to watch and i don't watch 10 hours a day of dstv so i hardly notice the repeats and always find something to watch. Add in the sport and i think it has alot to offer for a small amount of money.

The problem is people in this country compare everything to other countries where there are many more subscribers. comparing us to a place like UK for instance is silly because so many people can afford dstv type things so the subcriber base in the uk is like 20 x more than us.

2 quarts of black label per game = R24.
6 Rugby games to watch a month = R166.

Then again, I only watch rugby, the rest bore me to tears, so I'm not a good example.

Monochoice cut me off when I was away in the middle of last year. (Long story of incompetence there). Never hooked up again.

Seen a few games in the pubs and bars. But your life fills up with other things. The other day I was thinking, well, maybe I'll sign up for the sport. Then I thought, no, I'm happy doing other things. Like the hike along the coast last weekend.

I recommend that people "suspend" their service for a few months. See if you really have to have it. You may find you do not. ( I have heard that you can switch on and off your service, only paying for a few days at a time. Is this true?)

Another example. When I was living in the US, I was a big baseball fan. I would watch most of the SF Giants games on TV. And went to the stadium regularly as well. In the late 80's, the players went on strike for about 3 months. When they came back, I had moved on. I wasn't angry. I didn't say "I'm not watching again." I was just doing other things with my time. Baseball had lost its big place in my life.

For R500 a month they can bring back the SCI-FI channel and have at least 50% of the channels broadcast Dolby Digital audio. I don't care for HD at the moment - equipment is way over-priced and MC don't have the bandwidth.

What happened to their proposed adult channel?

It is obvious that the main reason for the increase is they are a monopoly. With competition their increases would be far more modest.

Case in point is PVR additional charge of R60/month. This service must be virtually free to run on their side!

they have to fill the 24 hours in the day. So sim-u-sex has to do, I suppose.

Well, me and my wife NEVER watches any sport. So R500 pm is a waste for me. I always pay my DSTV ahead for a year, but I have decided from next year I don't want to afford it.
Since we don't have normal (analog) TV reception where I live, I will get Compact or the FTA channels only. Or hope DMO offers something useful

I believe there is a reconnection fee each time to 'prevent' this practice (unless it is a 2nd subscription / holiday home).

My understanding of the model was that operating costs per consumer decrease. As more people sign up the cost to deliver to that customer actually decrease. So it would appear that market saturation has been reached.

I'd say that their argument for an increase is bogus unless people are starting to stop their subscriptions.

Development and implementation of new services, like HD and digital terrestrial is not free...

I know they bought one or more outdoor HD broadcasting units which cost tens of millions.

Then it would be obvious that salaries must have increased, rentals for their nationwide offices must have increased, equipment maintenance costs must have increased, content costs must have increased, etc, etc, etc...

I doubt their subscriber base is growing very fast in this economic climate.

That does sound correct but considering our population and the amount that can actually afford dstv i am unsure it applies to this country where growth is not exactly sky rocketing.

Maybe in other countries that might apply but dstv is a luxury in this country and at the rate people are losing jobs i would imagine dstv is not in fact growing, possibly losing subscribers every month.
