MultiChoice price increase due to 'operating costs'

I propose a strike!

For one month we must all "pause/stop" our subscriptions.

And demand a proper pay-per-channel service.

R499.00 x 20,000 people = R10,000,000.00

I'm sure someone will feel that missing R10mil :D

If we don't choose a month now it will never happen.

I propose December 2009, since most people will try and go away for some time. If you can afford Dstv , you can afford a holiday ;)
You'll have an extra R500 bucks :D

Don't you just love the way that the debit order system smacks you in the face when you try to do this?
You'll have to get rid of the debit order system first.
 
The average 'Joe South African' has proven time and time again that they are not willing to do anything but moan.

I'm afraid only a viable alternative is a solution to the problem.

This comment is not a criticism, but I really don't understand why anyone is prepared to pay even more per month [over and above the already exorbitantly expensive bouquet subscription fee] to be able to use a PVR decoder that one has bought for an already high price. Kids. The PVR is also a dual view decoder so apart from being able to watch two different shows at any given time we can also record a third. It helps keep the peace. There is also a lot of content on there from the now defunct KTV so again, Kids. You have to pay r60 for the dual view capability so why not pay the same for the PVR (which includes the dual view).

Yup, moaning has become a national pass-time.

As with any other service in SA, you can (and should) vote with your wallet. If you don't like the service, don't buy it. Quite simple actually.

I, for one, won't cancel my DSTV subscription. I find it very valuable and informative. Especially the Discovery / NG type of channels.

But if I did not, I'd just not pay for the service.

BTW, boycotting the service in December during school holidays is probably going to get very little traction.

Yeah - R60 is a small price to pay. Fortunately they now allow the downgrade + PVR option.

No longer true, as of about a year ago. I used to enable it for short periods at a time on "special request" (read: endless nagging) from my sons for specific sporting series, but no longer. It used to be that they'd charge you a R50 activation fee each time, but the actual airtime was billed in daily increments (pro-rated based on the monthly fee). If you disconnected, you had the option of them keeping your credit balance or even having it refunded!
Now, no longer. You still pay the R50 activation fee, but billing is now in full monthly increments. So if you wish to switch it on, then you'd better keep it on for the entire month to get your money's worth cos they no longer refund credit balances either :(

That said, I entirely agree with your other points re getting a life that does not involve tv. I'm now approaching the end of my month window (activated it for rugby and uefa soccer (I think)) but not going to spend another month on this sh*t.

As for the "educational" channels, what a crock of rubbish, I say! It is all aimed at the lowest common denominator and seek to thrill and entertain rather than educate. The camera action, the short info-bites, the disturbing flashes of light, the mindless repetition ... it all makes me think that their target audience are Ritalin-fuelled ADD/ADHD youths with attention spans and double-digit IQ's. Nature is NOT entertainment, watching NatGeo Wild is NOT education - if you believe that, then you are the sad product of the anaemic modern education and a tv brain-numbing childhood...

You can downgrade to compact or easyview and upgrade to premium (read more garbage) once a month for free.

MChoice belongs to Media 24. Media 24 has had some R400 million rand fires burning their printing factories to the ground in Cape Town and Paarl. They gotta make it up somewhere.
 
Maybe I should look at DSTV Select for a while, with my HTPC I've recorded pretty much everything thats airing now, I could switch once a month to the different packages and keep the HDD full of content :)

Let me go and look at what channels are available. I remember preferring Sky News to BBC/CNN

Must say, that woman is quite funny. Especially when she describes how Bigfoot talks, asking for garlic. We'll probably see her and Bigfoot on Jerry Springer in a paternity issue at some point. :rolleyes:

As you know, I work near 24x7 and the TV in my study is mostly on. So I'm probably the foremost expert on the repeats. The SO laughs at me me when I start quoting complete episodes.....

But I still would not give it up. There are enough new programs coming on and the educational value is massive.

As much as I despise aspects of MonoChoice, specifically their pathetic advertising, it is not THAT expensive.

As for MonoChoice's advertising: Their ads seem to target people who have MonoChoice, so use the time to fetch beers, fire up the braai, get rid of the previous beers...

With Seacom coming and the possible huge decrease in bandwidth pricing do u all think that internet TV could be a competetor ? Already I can if I want to watch most programs online except some local stuff and evens rugby is available
