VirtualPC does in fact not run on Intel machines. When buying Office:MAC Pro, you get Virtual PC with, but you might as well chuck the disk :D I went with Pro, cause you get a WinXP disk and license with. Slipstreamed the WinXP disk to make it bootable, and Bob's your uncle. Parallels Desktop is incredible. As mentioned before in another thread, my WinXP VM with 256Mb memory, outperform my HP NX9110 DU316A (768Mb RAM)

Can you elaborate on that - what advantage does it give you?
 
Typo there, sorry bwana. Slipstreamed SP2, and burned it to a disk, using the methods described here

It actually relates to bootcamp as well.
 
Two things...

1/- You can only run a Parallels VM on the main partition of the host OS i.e you can't put the VM on an external HDD (please tell me I'm wrong).

2/- You can slipstream your XP SP2 disc to allow an install on an external USB HDD (not FW) and thus keep your boot camp partition to about 5GB. There are instructions online, I'll try to find the link.
The only problem I have is that you take a bit of a performance hit.

According the the userguide the parallels application needs to be on the main partition however you can store the bulky virtual machines where ever you like. http://www.parallels.com/files/upload/Parallels Desktop for Mac User Guide.pdf

Now I just need to get parallels . . . and an intel mac (checks dhl widget - en route) . . . and windows . . then I just need to figure out this slipstreaming lark . . . I'm sure there must be a manual somewhere :rolleyes:

There are loads of thread posts that come up in google, even one site that deals only with running XP off external drives. Downside is you need a windoze machine to do the biz:(

No worries - got one in the other room stopping the door from slamming shut. :) It's also doing a sterling job of collecting dust.

Qn is - for a parallels install will it save that much time? My intention is to install everything then copy the disk image to a dvd so when the current one gets contaminated I can just copy a new one across.
