The theory of evolution in total is just that, a theory which i believe to be untrue.Evolution in small doses does exist but theres a limit as to how far it can go unaided.
If the class is using this as a means to push a darwin type total evolution agenda then it would be uncalled for and I would agree with the muslim students,however if the basics of our understanding of what we deem "evolution" is being discussed(Things like bacterial mutations and memory) then the students should take part in it as its still open to further study before total evolution can be proven.
I still maintain unaided evolution is only possible up to a certain point.
You know what? The first half of that bolded statement is true but the second half is false. Where did you get the idea from that evolution occurs in anything else but "small doses"? Evolution occurs

The Theory of Evolution does not only deal with the development of new species but also the generational changes. That is why
you are
"more evolved"than you parents. BUT evolution does not always mean a positive change as you can be less adapted to deal with you environment than your parents. How? The case of breeding a crop species for drought resistance. Lets say for instance that two plants (A and B, the same species) that reproduce through pollination and cannot self-pollinate. Both plants are ably adapted to their semi-arid environment. The plants are pollinated from other plants in their environment, they flower and produce seed. A and B both produce 10 seeds all 20 seeds germinate and grow to adult plants. Since the environment has not changed all the plants grow fine and there is no distinction between A and B.
Now lets introduce climate change, rain occurs 50% less frequently. So what happens now? The population of B starts showing signs of water stress (withered and rolled leaves, stunted growth etc). Parents Plant A and B die from water stress. 4 of plant B die off, 6 plants are remaining. Of the 6 only 4 produce flowers and but they only produce 3 seeds each and only two grow to mature plants. There are now 18 B plants. Meanwhile plant A population is still growing happily and all 10 plants produce flowers and 10 seeds and all the seeds germinate and grow into mature plants. There are now 110 plants A.
Do you see where I am going with this? The plants go through quite a few more generations and eventually plant A outnumbers B by a factor of 1000 (speculative, not calculated).
So what happened? The parents A and B were never adapted properly to drought as they carried a dominant heterozygous gene for water stress. Through pollination (and sexual reproduction) the seeds (and adult plants) produced by B were effected by a homozygous recessive gene which effected plants ability to cope with water stress. However the plant A population were effected by a dominant homozygous gene that enhanced water stress coping.
In the both plant populations A and B
evolved but their species did not change. The only difference now is that plants A have a greater chance of survival in future than plants B. The fact that the population numbers are greatly skewed towards A means that the dominant homozygous water stress gene found in A will have a much higher chance of propagation and increase the survival chances of the species.
In the end this is evolution. This is how it starts. Do this repeatedly for 1000 years and who knows what changes will occur between plants A and B. Eventually these subpopulations will become so distinct that they will not be able to reproduce with one another AND
hey presto! we have a new species.
