I was waiting all day for one of the "regulars" on these issues to post this, but perhaps it is not consistent with what many would like to believe about Islam or mainstream Muslims.

Dutch Muslims on Tuesday offered to guard three Coptic churches in the Netherlands which have been threatened on an Al-Qaeda-linked website after a New Year's Day bombing killed 21 Coptic Christians in Egypt.

The Dutch Muslim Council, the Council of Moroccan Mosques in the Netherlands and the Federation of Islamic Organisations "offer protection" to three Dutch Coptic churches which were among 50 in Egypt and Europe threatened on a list on an Al-Qaeda-linked website, they said in a statement.

The Dutch Islamic groups promised to ensure that "Muslims are ready to guard the three churches, in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Eindhoven, against the threat by Al-Qaeda".

The Netherlands counts some 6000 Coptic Christians, seven Coptic churches and about a million Muslims.

The Dutch groups urged all Muslims to condemn the threat.

"It is up to us to do so because Al-Qaeda is claiming to act in the name of Islam. Christian Copts, us (Muslims), and all Dutch have the same enemy: the terrorists," the statement said.

"We can't sleep at the idea that Christian Copts may be attacked here, in the Netherlands."

Pastor Arsenious El Baramousy of the Amsterdam Coptic Church told AFP he would be meeting Muslim leaders later on Tuesday. "I will accept their offer, which has made me very happy," he said, adding about 12 Coptic volunteers were already guarding the Amsterdam church and scrutinising all visitors.

The pastor said he had contacted the police "who are taking measures" ahead of the orthodox Christmas to be celebrated on Friday.

Utrecht police confirmed they had upped security around the city's Coptic church.

Egypt has been on high alert ahead of 7 January, when the Coptic church celebrates Christmas, following the church bombing on Saturday that killed 21 people and injured 79.

Violent clashes have erupted around the country, as Copts accused the government of failing to protect them after a group claiming to be affiliated with al-Qaeda renewed threats against churches in Egypt recently.

"We cannot prevent people from expressing their sorrow, yet I ask them to express their feelings without violence," said Egypt's Pope Shenouda III, the patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church, in an interview late on Monday night with Egyptian state TV.

Copts are preparing to celebrate their Christmas on January 7, with thousands of Muslims planning to stand outside churches to offer protection and support.

Good on you guys. This is how to build bridges. Maybe peaceful coexistence is possible if this behavior can be continued and reciprocated.

It makes a welcome change from them blowing them up whenever they can. Pity they cant do that in Egypt and only in a country where they are a minority.

It's a great step towards religions showing more permanent tolerance of each other and removing the communist interference which deliberately threatens the stability of the world.

'Address Coptic complaints'

Copts, who make up about 10% of Egypt's 80 million people, have been targets of sectarian attacks and complain of discrimination, such as the legal requirement for them to obtain presidential permission to build churches.

In the interview, Shenouda said the state must address Coptic complaints.

"If it finds a law that harms some, the state has to correct the law or legislate new ones," he said.

Al-Qaeda are hardly "fellow Muslims". Where have you been the last decade when this was publicly explained, over and over and over... ? This type of strong Muslim condemnation of extremism has been happening even before 9/11. It has just never been considered "newsworthy".

Doctrinal systems define belief, not birth ethnicity. AWB are technically white, but the Al-Qaeda have a doctrinal system that is distinct from mainstream Muslims. Also, no-one blamed all whites (or Afrikaners) for excess committed by AWB, like many blamed Muslims in general for excesses committed in it's name by Al-Qaeda type deviants.

Yes, they do, all the time, even people who weren't born yet. It happens on these forums. I'm sure you must have seen it

The AWB not Whites preached what it did, Islam and not Arabs preaches what it does, Nazism not Germans preached what it did. Islam is a movement just like all the other, it is a choice and aims to remove our rights and thus it should be put to citisim and blam, just like all movements(AWB and Nazism is no exception in the least), which don't simply mind their own business.

We blame Islam as we blame the AWB or we blame Nazism. We do not put the blame on things people can't chose such as race, and as here, Islam is NOT A RACE.

Yes but not all of Islam is radical. Extremists are only a small percentage of Islam, just like in Christianity, there are extremists. You are extremist in your view that all Islam is bad.

No, most mulsims support the acts of these terrorists, and in fact all fund them.

ALL(right up to and including the two(out of one and a half billion) here protecting this church) muslims are mutilating children, indoctrinating them, have to vow for sharia etc etc etc... So now how could we say that they are not all responsible for such extreme unethical behaviour? In fact Nazis and AWB DON'T even do most of these things..

In fact, I consider Islam as not only posing a larger threat, but one doing more harm too, not only this but actually ALL, and not 'just some', muslims are actively in the practice of these acts of inhumanities.
