MWEB ADSL network changes

All the issues were not address. 0->5KB during the day for NNTP is not shaping, it's downright breaking it. Also, the "golden hours" seem to have shortened, 0130AM this morning i was still only getting 70Kb on a 4Mb DSL line. Either the DPI Shaper is out of whack or they've not provisioned enough bandwidth.

Either way, I dont think RPM put enough of the issues on the table, and Rudi side stepped around them. 820 odd page of complaints should be more than enough for a basis to report on.
Even the title itself "MWEB ADSL network changes" does not convery the problems users are experiencing which leaves me wondering why Mweb is being treated so carefully, perhaps the permanent Mweb Banner we see on the site these days ?

MWEB are BS'ing everyone! FACT.

I think so.

Hate marketing BS. Basically he didn't answer anything.
That being said, I am in Durban, and have no problems with my speed (but there is definitely heavy shaping during the day, while i am at work).

... also getting tired of these pathetic speeds and buffering on youtube... hardly ever see torrents go faster than 30k on my 4meg line these days, and constantly refreshing to get something to load is really getting to me!...

Its definitely not my exchange, my SAOL account works fantastic compared to Mweb!
We've got all this fiber landing in our country, and we're still subject to this level of shaping! Understandably its our current infrastructure, but common!

So if not Mweb uncapped 4meg, which 4meg uncapped option to choose at openweb?

lol @ all the poor suckers who fell for Mweb's lies about this being an "uncapped" product. You deserve what you get.

What? A connection that I don't have to worry about reaching a cap? Yep I'm such a sucker.

So I'm free to download all the loops and samples I want? Yeah does take a bit on a 384 line but with my casual internet usage I average 40Gb per month. I also get to play wow with no worries about the data usage like I had with 3G. So troll all you want Gary.

Hmm im in pretoria, have been getting 300kbps+ during peak hours on torrents.....been much faster lately.....

I'm too lazy to go look, but I'm half sure you were praising Mweb when the Uncapped thing started!

was very satisfied with the service during the day, the shapping is just too much now. lucky this uncapped service is month to month :)

The GOLD options are the cheapest uncapped packages now worth having.

"More dynamic shaping" shouldn't mean users should be raped, Rudi.

You mean.... when you are actually able to use the account to download anything that is not shaped to hell and back?

Nope, I called them on their lies from day one. I knew they would never be able to swing it for everyone to have the uncapped experience.
And they have had criticisms and problems since day one.
Some of us were wise enough to keep our money elsewhere.

If you really cut to the chase with this issue, the problem, in a nutshell, is that Mweb have been caught off guard with the recent "adjustment" Telkom made to ADSL line speed. Their IPCs into the ADSL cloud are congested (over contended), and they have to shape the hell out of the connection to guarantee a "normal" service to everyone. This is why they are adding an IPC in Durban - to relieve the pressure on the Midrand IPC.

If you think about it : 4mbps was upgraded to 10mbps, 512kbps to 1mbps. For capped users, there is no rate limit in place. Mweb duely raised the rate limit for uncapped users of the 512kbps to 1mbps. This all consumes extra bandwidth at the IPC, and the onward links, and it appears to me that Mweb : a. didnt plan for it, or b. are maxing out their investment, with the priority on capped users where the larger margins are.

I am tired of hearing about Telkom DSLAM issues and the like from Mweb. The problem is their side, in their planning department. My wish is that they would just be straight with their customers. In other words, tell uncapped users that it is a best effort service and that capped customers get priority on the IPCs and the longhaul links. This is how they have configured and enforced it on the shapers anyway. Armed with this info we can then make a choice if the service is satisfactory or not. They are selling mutton as lamb... and its hit and miss for so many people because its so d*** inconsistent.

So all you unhappy campers move on, I am sure you are going to get fantastic service and incredible speeds elsewhere for a similar price. And if it is not a Dslam or Telkom problem things are going to go much better for you, but if it is, boy are going to feel stupid. All you need is a couple of free 1GB accounts to test with, I have, and when things don't seem right I test with them and so far they have all had the same problem. So unhappy campers stop bitching and move on, the grass is always greener....

sorry to burst your bubble, but this has nothing to do with 512->1mb users.

This has been going on for far more then a month now

also still waiting on an mweb representitive to come back to me about my cancellation. been 48 hours now

They're starting to walk on thin ice with me. My erratic and plummeting speed issue started a few weeks ago. At first I thought it would just be a temporary thing but now it's become a major pain in the ass.
I could still handle seeing my speeds go down on peering, but now even my browsing is being hit really hard.
Waiting and waiting for a damn page to open like it's 1998 again makes me want to **** stones. At this rate I'd rather just go for a capped account with WebAfrica again, and get DSTV switched back on. Please MWeb, help a brother out here....

P.S. On a "good" day now I get just over 2Mb on speedtest. So effectively I now have 2/3 the speeds I had a few weeks ago (that's assuming every day is a "good" day, which it most certainly is not)

me too!

I'm very happy with the article... Its not like rpm has the answers, but what he has effectively done is brought the issue out into the public at last... Hopefully its enough to cause MWEB to start worrying about their bottom-line and actually get around to fixing it.

There are some real-world tests showing the huge differences in performance across the country in this thread.

Hi Everyone

I’ve just come from a meeting with Rudi and other senior management discussing the issues around this article and the general discussion we’ve seen in this forum recently so I’d like to take the opportunity to provide some additional feedback.

Firstly I can assure you that no-one has their head in the sand regarding the feedback we’ve received from this forum and we will continue to take your concerns very seriously and address them as far as possible.

The input provided by StNick and others has prompted us to establish additional monitoring systems and we are currently evaluating every possible aspect of the network performance in both JHB and Cape Town and on our international links to see if there are any performance anomalies which need to be addressed.

I would also like to point out that based on the feedback in this thread and our general client base that there are no clear indications at this point that there is a wide spread problem in JHB affecting all users.

This means that we cannot exclude from our thinking factors such as the performance on certain portions of Telkom’s backhaul network as our customers do have to traverse these networks in order to reach the IPC links. This is not to say that we are attempting to shift the responsibility for any issues elsewhere, merely that it must form a logical part of our investigation into the customer experience being reported.

Finally just to address a point that was raised regarding our plans for a Durban IPC node. I can assure you that this currently has no impact on the performance of the network, however the network build is progressing well and notwithstanding dependencies on 3rd party stakeholders we hope to have this in place towards the end of Q3 this year. This will certainly be good news for our subscribers in the KZN region and is a great step forward in establishing a truly national network.

Kind Regards
Will

Does not explain why locally cached youtube vids play well while new vids don't.

Yesterday E3 stream was atrocious on MWEB yet my free Afrihost account worked well.

Lots of other users also have access to other ISP accounts and all report good speeds when switching accounts.

Also people have been issues for the last few weeks. Before then everything was awesome.

Thanks for the Feedback Mweb.

Monday morning about 01:30AM i was running some tests, and even in this "golden period" of 1AM to 8AM I still was not getting decent speeds on international downloads, surely that is an incredibly quiet time on the network and the "dynamic" shaping should have allowed better throughput.
