MWeb adsl

@Conspirator: You will have to check about the free WiFi router for self-install customers at a Telkom shop. Previously they did extend their free no-contract WiFi router with the self-install option. If you can't get the free router then this offer is not nearly as attractive although it's hard to imagine any major changes regarding broadband in SA over the next two years. Look around on Google for a Zyxel P2602 to get feedback about that router.

I don't think that the router is locked. The first time that I heard about a locked router was in connection with *MWEB*.

Another thing that nobody tells you is that routers seem to be more easily damaged by lightning surges than modems. Telkom also seems to supply some of the best lightning protection with their routers and appear to be quite flexible about replacing their routers if they stop working. If you have to buy extra lightning protection for a third party router this is another expense and you definitely need it.

Don't even think about it just do it. Go out and buy extra lightning protection it is worth your while. Clearline do good products.

lol. Now thats Chinese math. MWeb Offer is:
Month 1-6: R179 pm
Month 7-12: R219 pm

If I average that out over the year (So that I can compare it with other ISPs) it gives R199 per month. My post was a bit vague on the "year" part. My apologies.

Includes locked  modem.

I'm probably gonna go with WA.

I understood this part. Have a wifi modem anyway. Problem is I applied over 6 weeks ago and still waiting for the connection. I especially took out the 12 month contract because the industry is fast moving. Looks like in 12 months I will still be waiting for a connection!! I phoned M-Web and they were rude, took my number and didn't phone back. I e-mailed twice and got no response. What's the point of signing up for a service when they don't make the effort to connect you?

I finally convinced my parents to go with WA.

Yotch: I understand what you mean with Telkom being the original distributer and any other ISP just being an extra "middleman". However I don't want to interact with Telkom if I can avoid it, even if it might be slightly more expensive.

Anybody know what the going rate for surge protection (phone line only) is?

Also found out today that the WA package does not include any voice filters. wtf?

@Conspirator: Take a look at that thread about Zyxel modems. I have been with Telkom for close on two years and I've never had any problems. The Telkom ADSL accounts also come with free dialup access and 300 minutes of access to Telkom WiFi T-Zones. The only other ISP that offers the WiFi access is MWeb as far as I know. Lightning protection will cost you an additional R250. Add in an ATA like a Linksys PAP2 and you're looking at close to R1000 extra before you've even started. Two or three months down the line you will need more bandwidth and that will cost you at *least* R150 more than Telkom per month i.e. R70 per gigabyte. The total extra cost for the year will be close to R3000! Once you start to watch video or use torrents 1Gig will never be enough - you'll use that up in a few hours. If you want to make use of hotspots you'll have to pay even more. You've really got to love WA to stay with them. When your folks see how much extra they have to fork out each month they'll want to cut off your ADSL completely but they won't be able to because you'll be on contract! How can you hide the bad news from them when they keep receiving adverts from Telkom every month? Why don't you try Telkom, see if you can get the free router and then change over to Web Africa after a few months. That way you get a free router and can move to WA at any time? You don't have fiddle with debit orders etc. and you just get billed on your usual telephone account. To order you just phone 10219 and you never have to see anybody. Just make it clear that you want the self-install option plus free router.

Yotch, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but:

I don't need dial-up access, wifi minutes or VOIP, wireless etc

I doubt that Telkom is going to give me a R2000 modem and let me go to another ISP. Not even Telkom is not that stupid / charitable. Their shareholders want their profits.

I don't trust Telkom and their relaxed capping. Scrap that. I don't trust Telkom.

@Conspirator: I am with Telkom Broadband Level 2 and they let me use whatever ISP I like. I also have an account at Web Africa which I use from time to time - it's too expensive to use it normally. I tried it for several months and was forced to change to Telkom. If you do the calculations properly I think you will find that Telkom makes more profit from you if you sign up with WA than if you go with them i.e. they sell bandwidth to WA for R50+ per Gig but supply it for around R40 directly to their own customers. ADSL is very expensive in SA to begin with and nobody can afford to pay even more than necessary. Many of the iBurst and MyWireless users have also quietly gone back to Telkom.

This is response from Telkom.

Thank you for the query, the Free modem with the Telkom Self installation option has ended on 31 August 2007 as per our website and printed communication to the market, you can still opt for SIO and save the R490.00 installation fee as well as opt for a 24-month contract and receive a USB or Wifi modem free of charge.

I hope this clarifies the matter, kind regards

Csnoopy: Thanks for clearing that up. But wasn't installation at R404? Not that it matters with SIO.

Thank you for the advice guys and to spellcheck.I have signed up with the site for downloads.I apologise for the late reply as I have been rather ill again.I now have a further 2 months to find a provider as I must give Mweb 1 months notice. This will be done, however on phoning an ISP (recommended ),I was informed that you cannot run 2 ISP's off 1 router.I have not spoken to my computer fundi yet about the problem but will soon.

AFAIK the MWeb modems are locked so that one can only use MWeb.

On an unlocked modem one should be able to run two different ISP simultaneously. See Routesentry thread.

Sorry to divert the thread but just to close my first post and mention that M-Web and Telkom finally came to the party and connected my ADSL. M-Web were very helpful on the phone and reduced my first sub due to inconvenience.

Service works really well
