Even though I'm a happy Mweb customer, I'd probably suggest WebAfrica right now - easier to sign up and cancel. Mweb's still a little bit of a schlepp to do that - it's really the only part of their service that I think lags the competition - so if WebAfrica works out for you, you'd have saved yourself a lot of pain and anguish
I was speaking to someone this weekend who has just gone from Openweb Gold to Webafrica; he said the OW gold was a strange beast. It'd work great for a while, and then suddenly sucked, and if you complained, OW would give you another account - the strange thing was, the accounts were with different providers (Altech and IS iirc) ... so it sounds like they sell you a cheap account, hoping it'll suit you, and if you moan, click you over to one with less profit margin.
Now I know why they don't advertise what backbones their accounts are on
Indeed. I made a simple request the other day to Mweb, "Please downgrade my line to 1MBit All-inclusive". Eventually after going through all their various support chains I get told I need to email my request through to their migrations department. After the email was sent I get the usual reply asking for my client code, which I give to them and 4 days later I am rolling on 1MBit, then a mere day later I notice my internet is slower than what I thought 1MB should be and upon checking my router I see my line is only snycing at 384k! Seriously WTF? I ask to go one notch lower on their scale and they take me all the facking way down? The big question mark about WebAfrica is their network performance after you hit the rolling soft-cap. As open as their policies are, this part of the deal is as murky and shrouded in mystery as everyone else's. Who knows - the usage patterns of you and the other 3 might suit their soft-capped network. It might suit Mweb's ... you ideally want to try both, and if you try Mweb first and it's not for you, you'll have done a ton more paperwork than if WebAfrica's didn't suit you.
The absolute worst case scenario is that you have a month of uncapped internet that frustrates you a bit.
Even better - see if WebAfrica will give you a test account for a bit, I remember a WA rep volunteering that on another thread here
As a matter of interest, what's the ISP of that account? Hit speedtest.net - that usually has a fairly good track record of guessing the account provider. I'm not sure if IS/Altech resell accounts to the point the resellers can attach their own whois information to the IP pools they're assigned.
