MWEB / DStv uncapped ADSL uasge conspiracy

What about the theory that the clamp down on "abuse" is related to streaming online TV which is hurting DSTV?

Of course I am loving the fact that Hershaw is now talking about thresholds which can be exceeded and this leading to "treatment" - read throttling. So the next bout of questions has to focus on what other than throttling - which they have promised not to do - is possibly meant by "slow down your internet".

Also they haven't provided proof now have they?

In fact I would put it simpler: Hershaw is telling a big fat lie that would make the Nats who founded Naspers proud. Provide proof that warnings are being sent to users who are using DSTV on demand such that their consumption is equal to that of other users who are receiving the warnings.

It wouldn't be a problem if MWeb regarded certain traffic as exempt from the tally of usage (such as if the traffic is on network) but quantity of usage cannot be the criteria for "abuse" because the AUP does not provide thresholds and it is an uncapped product offering. The issue very simply is that MWeb is calling abuse on the basis of thresholds which they refuse to reveal rather than on the basis of obstructive behaviour on the network (bypassing shaping).

I'm a reasonable guy. I am not in favour of hogs using 1-2TB of data a month, but I do pay for a "premium" ADSL account for which the T&Cs have now changed. I myself probably do not exceed 300GB a month, but I have paidfor the service for the simple reason that I hate to be limited.

Fine it's their product. I have been threatening for a while now, but this might be the last straw. If they do not lower the prices I will either use one of their cheaper products or I will go to greener pastures. Fair is fair. If it is not a premium service any more then they cannot charge premium prices.

MyBB should really ask MWEB the questions related to the usage policy amendments. I have made numerous posts related to this issue, overwriting their marketing campaigns with T&C’s (and all related policies) is highly unethical, this should be questioned and answers demanded in detail. What is the legal approach and implications and should it be MWEB’s will to continue like this, will the other ISP’s pursue this very same MWEB stance.

We as concerned users in regard with transparency cannot keep on repeating our position on this MWEB business decision, we need to know all the terms and condition (incl. all related policies) in detail.

As with my post on policies in general, highlighting my concern with MWEB:

Allowing actions like this, will surely allow many more down this unethical road.

“If you exceed the thresholds we have put in place it does not matter if you watch DStv, read Die Burger or shop at Kalahari.net,” Hershaw said.

Well I guess he hasn't shopped at Kalahari for a while. :)

It will remain a theory. If it's services such as netflix/hulu etc it is clearly against the aup, if one reads it of course.

How about a questionnaire for MWEB users? Use MyBB users as sample data to determine if there is some sort of trend.

I Propose the following survey:

1 - Average Monthly usage last 6 months ?
2 - Abuse letter received Y/N
3 - DSTV subscriber Y/N
4 - Do you stream Internet TV services other than DSTV? Y/N
5 - MWEB Package
6 - Do you stream ondemand?

Then RPM can use that to formulate some hypothesis.

Would be interesting to know how many users got warnings.... We would be able to tell what level they deemed to be "abuse"

As for me:

1 - 39gb
2 - No
3 - Yes
4 - No
5 - 4mb Uncapped Premium
6 - No

For what reason ?

Can't be to do with bandwidth usage if they want us to stream their own partners product.
by using a VPN etc ...
The problem with the argument is that it isn't automatically against the AUP if you are using the service correctly and without intent to bypass shaping unless they know that you are breaking the law which they can't. At the end of the day a case can be made for ISPs to have an issue with streaming video from foreign systems but it begs the question why their aren't domestic products

THIS!

LoL, well spotted. :)

Think it is time for a change. One month that I abuse my "uncapped" account and now this. Who has 6mbps upcapped options and is also a great ISP? :p

You should probably ask another - 6: Do you stream ondemand?

I would assume Ondemand is exempt traffic since it is on their network, but I don't see how having a DSTV account would be used to decide if you should get a warning letter. They are separate companies as far as I understand and don't have the same database for clients.
