MWEB Gaming Feedback

Just had confirmation from our networks team we are experiencing some latency spikes on International at present

Hi Will

thanks for all the effort
I played Lotro last night and average latency is about 280
so good all round
There haven't been any major updates in last couple of weeks so I can't see if the updates is quicker or not but I believe is should be fine too
I will shout as soon as it goes F2p because that will be a major update again (at least 1GB)
will see if I can get some time in on BF BC2 tonight and maybe get a wireshark report for you there too if you want

Not going to give you my login details since I don't want your guys picking up all the cool porn sites from me :p

Ok, thanks. Glad you guys are aware of it - it's not something I've ever experienced before and I've been on MWeb uncapped for a few months now.

No problem thanks for letting us know.

I'm sure everything will settle down in the next week or so, our networks team have just informed me that they are increasing the capacity of the Cape Town link tonight as part of the fine tuning - there will be a slight disruption sometime after midnight (rerouting to JHB), while they bring this online.

I've also been informed that our international capacity increase is looking like next weekend at the moment. We're dependent on some 3rd party cabling and the finalization of London infrastructure so unfortunately it simply can't be done any faster.

Glad to hear that Veneficus. no need to worry about the BC2 front I have that well covered myself :D.

I seem to be averaging around a 100-120 in game ping which is very playable considering that it's a 384k line and have had no issues so far in terms of the EA login or the server browser.

Also you don't need to be concerned about the last point - all we would be able to see is the traffic manager prioritizing it as 'flash video' :p

hehehe or as .JPG :)

will let you know if I ever have issues with any games :)
but I must say thanks to MWEB for trying to accommodate gamers
great service :)

Can us Playstation 3 gamers get some love!? :)
Would you guys be able to decrease the time it takes for PSN store downloads and help ping times the same way?

Have to say even though I am experiencing slow interwebs and gaming at the moment (as already given the reason why by MWEB guys) the fact that they are here trying to help gives me a little hope.

Hi Slapdash

I don't really know much about the PS3 online content myself, but our senior network engineer is a PS3 man himself so I'm sure that this has been given some attention already :) I will chat to him tomorrow and try and get you some feedback.

Please keep your cr*p off the Internet. Like all things Microsoft, this should not leave the local LAN. FFS!

Hi Stefan

How do Gog deliver the files to you? Is it a normal http download, or do they have a client like Steam? If it's http it shouldn't be shaped. If you'd like to do a test with me PM me your account details and then once I've confirmed run a download with nothing else interfering on your connection and let me know the exact times so that I can see how the traffic was shaped.

While in the beta phase they used a client like steam but haven't relaunched it yet, they are working on a new version currently. When using the gog downloader the speeds use to be fine. But since the site relaunched they have been delivering the files using normal http.

Tested with both free download manager and normal browser downloading. During the day from about 9:00 - 20:00 it only downloads at about 10kbps at most. Goes to 40 kbps after 20:00 and then after 00:00 it starts getting 80 kbps - 320 kbps, averages out at somewhere between 100 kbps to 200 kbps. This is on a 4mbps uncapped account.

Just to compare this with steam. Anytime during the day when downloading from steam, the lowest speed I get is about 50kbps, usually average out at about 115kbps. Haven't tested steam downloads after 00:00. Ea download manager goes at about 80 kbps in business hours.

All other http download speeds are fine for me, its just from gog.com.

Getting some love for Consoles would be brilliant.

PSN downloads usually come from here:
http://zeus.dl.playstation.net

And looks like 'login' is:
auth.np.ac.playstation.net:443

And UI updates:
http://xmb.dl.playstation.net/xmb/

Basic ports:
TCP:

* 80
* 443
* 5223

UDP:

* 3478
* 3479
* 3658 should also be opened for voice chat.

(less shaping on 3658 would be great)

Console game ports are(usually)

Tcp udp
5223 5223, 3478, 3479, 3658

I am adding to the list to confirm ports used.

Playstation Network Required Ports

TCP 80
TCP 443
TCP 5223
UDP 3478
UDP 3479
UDP 3658

Playstation Online Game Ports

UDP 3074
TCP 3074
UDP 3659
UDP 3660

Some games might use different ports but these are used in the majority of cases.

My GOG is suffering too, I'm barely managing 2KB/s at this point. It's a normal http download and I'm using Free Download Manager to download it. I tested on our Web Africa account and I get normal speeds from them. Please sort this out because I'm not waiting 190 hours for a 1GB file to download. Download seems to be pointing to http://wpc.11df.edgecastcdn.net.

Been experiencing really *** spikes and lag on the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 servers, especially on SGS.

Also getting lag on Company of Heroes: Online.

BoeTeK: the whole MWeb network is doing strange things lately. Think it is part of the upgrades they said they were implementing this week.
