MWEB Gaming Feedback

let will have a look at it, sure he can help you out, you probably routing though jhb, most cpt guys is fine.

Seriously... what's up with mweb and wow? I have a 512 mweb uncapped account. I just can't play wow. Huge (like 20sec) latencies and d/c'

My line stats are perfectly fine. I use 5-10GB per months. WoW runs perfectly fine from other isp's. Yet when I log into my mweb account it just won't work.... it won't.

I have pm'ed that ops guy and appart from tampering with some router setting (which all works perfectly fine with other isp's... so I don't see the point really) nothing has changed.

I also can not see how this has anything to do with telkom or my line. Like I said... other isp's work fine. With this mweb account it worked fine a couple months ago. But month after month you can see how the service degrades. From merely playing whenever I what to a point where I can barely log in.

Now I can understand the shaping and all.... but srsly... this is wow.... this is 7 years old. I used to play this on dial-up.... surely you can make good with adsl? I also understand the shaping with torrent's and that wow is effectively a torrent/p2p or what not, but again... at 10-20mb/hour it's not like I'm trying to crash South Africa's internet backbone by playing.

I have just upgraded to 4mbps... i have a feeling I might regret it.

/sigh

/edit forgive the harsh words.... but I'm sort off frustrated here as the only thing I can properly do with my R599 account is surf news24 as much as I like....

Hi Kabraal completely understand your frustration, just to clarify a few points for you:

Firstly WoW doesn't get treated as torrents - it's classified as gaming traffic, which is given top priority on our network.

Secondly you're right, WoW is ancient, but the game and the network requirements have evolved significantly over the years and there has been some discussion here recently which indicates that speeds below 1mb may not be sufficient anymore, particularly if you are raiding, and / or running a number of data intensive addons.

However I have seen this issue come up a few times recently so I will be running some comparative testing over the next few days specifically with our 384 and 512k shaped products to see if there is anything on our side that might need tweaking. I'll provide some more feedback here once I have some conclusive results.

Well, I successfully raided a full 25 man up till Cho'gall yesterday on a 384 shaped line with a PC not prolly just as old as WoW itself (Yes, I'm serious here it's quite sad :() But anyway...

I had a little trouble at first with lag but I quickly fixed that by turning off my combat log (just go to settings and uncheck everything, I also disabled my recount sync (/recount sync) Which effectively made my able to raid a 25man with **** tons of aoe+vent and I still maintained a pretty awesome 200-220 MS score thingy!

Yeah I am absolutely loving MWEB right now for WoW, I didn't even know that these sorts of latencies existed for plebs! :P

Keep it going MWEB, you are getting a lot of referrals from me now!

One of our engineers went through extensive testing last night with a user on a 384k connection and he has implemented some configuration adjustments this morning based on his findings which he hopes will improve the experience for 384 and 512k players. I'd be interested to hear some feedback from anyone who plays on those speeds as to whether, or not you notice anything different.

With regards to my previous post, if it gets better I think my face will melt. I will give it some testing today and tonight and post feedback :)

I would like to comment:

For the past few weeks latency is good for playing wow. its now 220-280ms most times, last year it was 500ms at its best. I always had to switch to my WA backup account for raiding.
Something has changed, and whatever it is, its highly appreciated.

I am on a 4meg uncapped.

lol Steve :D I must say when I look up at the latency meter on Titanpanel and it shows the home value as 170ms it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. You shouldn't see any difference from these adjustments though as they were limited to the 384 and 512k profiles.

Thanks for the feedback Tom , glad you're enjoying it :)

So I've been forced to use my free afrihost account today (me being forgetful and not paying mweb soz will no paycheck for joo :( )

Anyway, I've found that the MS difference isn't that big (30 odd more on afrihost) /but/ It still seems lightyears away from what Mweb is giving me, I play melee chars in PVP so it's quite noticeable!

It's a good thing I have some Salticrax squirrelled away in my cupboard :p

I'm glad to hear you're getting a good experience on 384k though, would really like to hear from some other 384k users what their experience was like last night.

i heard soem rumors steam is having problems, im not at home to test, but my friend thats not on mweb, cant log in to steam also

Having trouble authenticating with Steam (yet again). Located in JHB.

There are no reported issues with Steam. Please can you power down your router and try to login again.

Regards,
MWEB Ops

Try using another account or even a cellphone. If Steam is still misbehaving then you will know where the problem is.

Xennox you can try updating to the beta steam client which is available - you will notice that there are some additional choices for region available... :)

I am on the 384k profile and yes I was getting some nice 170 to 180ms last night :)

Slightly higher tonight (322ms oh noes) but will see in raid!
