Mweb Local Uncapped Trial

Thanx Garyvdh, I will just finish this month and pay for it, then I will cancel the accounts. Next year I will get the mweb account and reference this site again for the setup... and see how it goes. Just sad that I have to leave WA. :(

I would move over to mweb, but i prefer the ease of an online signup form, mweb needs to move to the 21st century.

I'm sure they even ask for dental records.

Is it that hard to sign up with them?

It's not as bad as i made out, but still, i would prefer an online order form.

It's more work than it should be.

This is taken from their site:

Just follow the instructions below:

Make sure you have the following information with you:
ID number
2 contact numbers
postal and residential addresses
Telkom bill (for ADSL All Inclusive purposes)
debit order details
3 months bank statements and/or payslip
proof of address

Call us on 08600 32000 to sign up or tell us your name and phone number and we'll call you back.

Now if its that hard to sign up, how hard is it to cancel?

I did my sign-up with MWEB entirely over the phone in 5 minutes, because I was only get the ISP account, not the entire bundle.

So how much longer do you think this special will last? Do you think there is a line in the sand at which time they'll say thanks for signing up . . . special over?

I suspect that they are waiting for Seacom to go live. Then they will be able to say "we were the only ISP to actually comply with ICASA's ruling regarding local bandwidth" (that local bandwidth should be uncapped).

Surely they have given it enought time to run their trials and see how many people actually use lots of local bandwidth and it must be economically viable for them to do this. The number of power users does not outweigh the new sign-ups they are getting, so it is still worth it to them. You can be sure that if it was not economically viable they would have pulled the plug already. Come June next year they hope to have tons of people signed up and then throw a new deal on the table with Seacom's bandwidth.

The other factor is... that M-Web might already have access to other local network feed for which they are paying a pittance... it is possible by now that they are not paying Telkom for their local bandwidth. Remember they are on of the top VANS providers and now they can build their own network.

Well does it matter?
Yes I use the uncapped local and transfer on average 6GB a day, but if they cancel their uncapped local then there goes a few thousand subscribers.

Even though they aren't making much money off local, and it is being abused, if say now they have 1000 customers then they get R14500 per month, also, local bandwidth doesn't exactly require much work, it's not like we are asking to transfer our data to servers across the globe, that's where the real money lies and is the difficult part since our bandwidth is so limited.

I'm sure this uncapped local thing is benifiting mweb, they get money for doing an easy job and that money can be pumped into infustructure.

Isn't this like the all-u-can-eat offers at the restaurants. There will be some customers who will take a lot, but most will have a normal amount or a little more. They all think they're getting a bargain (and will pay more), but you just can't use that much on local. Well, most of us can't anyway.

My worry in this whole scenario is that they reserve the right to charge at some point - one day if/when they finally decide to do so.

if they aren't going to give any prior warning to the end user , then people pulling 100-200gb+ a month are in for a shocker..

thats why i am not signing up if you have to give your banking details.

Where have they said that in writing? When they put that in writing then I will limit myself to what they specify. Up until now they have not specified any limit and have not indicated that they intend to charge for it.

I don't know why we are worrying, the rest of the world has uncapped, this is our version of uncapped.

Once Seacom arives I'm sure things will change a whole lot and maybe a cheaper true uncapped soloution will be available.

And in response to somebody elses post, yes in the T&C they state they are that:
Mweb is allowed to allow the user to exceed their monthly cap,
Mweb is allowed to charge for any aditional usage above the monthly cap.

Now that sounds a bit dodge to me, at first it seems like they are being nice, giving a bit extra, but then suddenly they say they might charge you for what you didn't want in the first place.

email they send me.

Thank you for getting back to us.

From feedback received, MWEB offers free local-only access as a trial
after reaching base product data cap. We do reserve the right to charge
for local-only bandwidth but have not done so to date.

We have set a 'soft' limit of 10GB local only usage but this is merely
for our reporting and statistical purposes. So in summary we are
absorbing the costs entirely. We would love to have some input from
forum regulars around a decent 'cap' for such a local-only service?

Kind regards

Hmm, I didn't get that one. And it sounds pretty nebulous to me. There is no limit specified as a cut off and no charge negotiated. They would have a hard time allocating a charge to any user.

.. and all anyone would have to do is to point to ICASA regulation that local bandwidth should be uncapped.

Is Mweb's news server still up and running (news.mweb.co.za) as i can ping it but not connect to it? (Or does it suffer the same as SAIX & IS?)
