Mweb Local Uncapped Trial

Annoying, I was just abought to get one of them 1GB+Uncapped local accounts.. *hesitant*

The way I see it. No official declaration = my liberty to do what I want with hteir product

me too.... The original e-mail in February said "uncapped" (in accordance with the ICASA ADSL regulations "local usage shall be uncapped").

Since then I have tried to do extensive testing on what "uncapped" means! :)

Its time for mweb to get a myadsl rep that has some insight/brains/whatever you want to call it and give us 100% the truth on what they are planning to do!

are they going to absorb the costs by heavy users forever ? (would be nice) Ti clearly made their intentions known.

I can get bill

I have done say, 50GB and see what the 'possible' damage is... if nothing is mentioned, I'll make notes of who I spoke to etc so come end of month, when I get bill, I can fight it

We did the ADSL All Inclusive Migration(Were MWeb customers already) and you just fax the needed forms and everything is done within a week (recieved progress and confirmation via our mweb e-mail), without having to make a single phonecall or recieved any from telkom etc.
Sure for some it is a hassle to fax/e-mail them the documents, but they don't call you with all those anoying little details which you already answered for them in the docs.

As for local i have tried the local content scene, but the most interesting stuff i could download only reached 8 gb's. If there were more local stuff available a larger or uncapped local would make sense, but not from what i have experienced.

My Experience with 'Local Uncapped"

Going back to happenings end of June
I was on the 384kb 1 gig, with 5 boosters/month package, took advantage of the local uncapped solution after using the 1 gig cap and 5 boosters, even noticed via IRC how how our host-mask changed to telkomadsl.co.za and rode traffic mainly on local uncapped and was debited R2799 and R2354 out my account almost to the exact figure twice in consecutive months.

Uncapped I was only downloading plus minus 10 gigs each month, but felt very angry as Mweb had said that I had changed the contract to a pay per meg contract. I assure you that is not the case as I used to buy the extra 1 Gig Booster if needed. Anyways there can be tons of debate on that matter, just wanted to share a shocking experience I had with Mweb and yep I was one of their older members even on dial-up days.

I cancelled the contract with Mweb and had to give a months notice, went for Neotel and have never looked back :) All I ever wanted was the help and service and to get value for money. Sorry for you Mweb, you lost one of your best customers as I was out of the goodness of my heart buying 5 boosters each month knowing I could get a much better deal anywhere else, *blegh* so much for customer loyalty Mweb, Neotel has got my back now thank you very much :)

I phoned MWeb a couple of weeks back and asked the person when they are stopping the uncapped and he said it will remain free and uncapped permanently. I do however keep checking my MWeb mailbox to see if they have sent me anything stating otherwise.

Looks like I'm going for them. Now just the network locked modem story...

EDIT: Damn, I read till the end and saw it's capped at 10GB, but it's still better than Telscum.

Maybe we should ask RPM to get clarification out of Mweb exactly what their policy is instead of leaving people in the dark.

Think we need to report them to someone as they leave the auto booster on by default so sure they have billed the crap out of a couple of their clients.

Just to refresh your memories...

Good news for all MWEB ADSL customers

As of February 2008, MWEB is launching a trial program offering local-only bandwidth to customers who
reach their data cap limit - which means you can enjoy continued access to Internet services hosted in South Africa after you use up your monthly data limit.*

For the duration of the trial, you will be able to access local content, websites, services and any data that is transferred from a South Africa-based source free of charge whenever you exceed your data limit.

This means that if you reach your ADSL cap, you will still be able to:

# Send and receive your MWEB e-mail as usual
# Surf any website hosted in South Africa
# Continue to access your local Internet banking

... all at no additional cost to you!

TIP: if you still want access to international websites, services and content (i.e. international bandwidth) after you have reached your cap, visit My Account and either buy a Booster or switch over to our Pay per MB billing option.

Remember that all our standard terms and conditions, which you accepted when you subscribed to the ADSL service, still apply.

We will let you know once the trial period has come to an end. In the meantime, happy surfing!

* This is to conform with recent regulations issued by ICASA regarding the provisioning of ADSL services.

Kind regards
MWEB Operations

That was the last correspondence I had from M-Web regarding the local only trial in February. I have had no further correspondence about it since then.

This is what it says on M-Web's web site...

http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/ADSL/WhydidyouputmeonPayPerMBbillingbydefaul/tabid/615/Default.aspx

When they sign up with MWEB for ADSL, new customers are able to select either the Pay Per MB or Booster options. Customers who do not indicate a choice go onto Pay Per MB billing by default, because this ensures that their Internet access does not stop when they reach their cap -- and according to ICASA regulations, we cannot stop a customer's local access when they they reach their cap.

The uncapped local only is still confirmed here...

http://www.mweb.co.za/productsservices/Portals/0/pdf/products_adsl_may_08.pdf

and here...

http://www.mweb.co.za/productsservi...ernetAccessADSLPricing/tabid/142/Default.aspx

so give it a rest guys... the trial has not ended... until you receive notice by e-mail.

This is not true as they have the pay per MB thing enabled by default. Luckily I was told by a friend to disable it when I got my account. Maybe they will stop the trial when they stop making money off users who don't disable that option.

PS I also check my MWeb mailbox every month to see if they have sent me a mail informing me that the trial is over.

The only reason peeps are getting het up is because Mweb agents are saying these things bru. That's why I said some clarification needs to be forthcoming. You can't have a website claiming free local and then when you phone they say "oh no, there's a 10GB cap" on it.

Then don't phone and ask the agents.

i've decided to ask mweb AGAIN - whats happening - on a more senior level - and this is the mail i just got back:

Thank you for getting back to us.

From feedback received, MWEB offers free local-only access as a trial
after reaching base product data cap. We do reserve the right to charge
for local-only bandwidth but have not done so to date.

We have set a 'soft' limit of 10GB local only usage but this is merely
for our reporting and statistical purposes. So in summary we are
absorbing the costs entirely. We would love to have some input from
forum regulars around a decent 'cap' for such a local-only service?

Kind regards

aah, a bit more clarity on the matter at last ......... nice one Mweb.
