MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

Anyone posted the question on Facebook yet? I don't have access from here so can't check.

Hope they lose lots and lots of clients. BTW i used a paid SSL server for my downloads.

So that SSL server gets around their shaping right?

And the funny thing is that a few MyADSL guys will complain bitterly, call it the end of the world, and everyone else won't care at all that MWeb disconnect a few of the insanely high usage users. It'll improve the service, so great.

It is true that they should spell out why people are being disconnected and at what usage they'll look at your account. So far everyone except k_k has admitted they bypassed the shaping to get disconnected.

I never could complain about m-web's service. When i joined on the 18th of march this year, i told my friends to join and praised m-web for the affordable (not really - if you look at worldwide statistics) adsl uncapped package. After a few days the throttling/shaping/whatever began.

Read here and there and found that many people use the SSL encrypted paid servers to get by their ridiculous low download speeds. As many people on this forum and elsewhere say is that ja i/we/some of us abuses the service. True i don't deny it. BUT then they must stop bull*****ting me and a few thousand customers about true uncappped. Forget about TC. How many people read TC? And they change it whenever they like.

M-Web you suck. Pls tell all your friends to go to an ISP that tells you what you may or may not use for their "true uncapped" service.

Hahaha, I'm sorry man but you're being an idiot. You don't read the T&C where they do in fact tell you that you can't bypass their shaping, but you still do it and now you want everyone to tell their friends to move to an ISP where they tell you what you can and cannot do? Brilliant.

good luck dude, i had this coversation 3 weeks ago with mweb after fwd my details and was told shaping...full stop, i to am only getting speeds of 35kbs in the wee hours of the morning on a 4 meg line

yeah I know but it's worth a shot....besides...the CEO of MWEB SAID that there's no shaping off-peak hours...or at least there shouldn't be

"We have no intention of shaping bandwidth more than is necessary in peak network conditions. It’s not dramatic shaping at all, and it’s only in peak hours."

You have high hopes to think that their service (quality of linespeed/throttling) will improve. Good luck with that. I work for an ISP and know they are talking crap.

Who's the idiot? You? If you know ALL the rules, you can play by it. Hello, wake-up.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say, but ALL the rules are basically: don't bypass the shaping and don't use it for business purposes. Wouldn't have taken much to figure that out.

Did it take much to read over the part where it says it can be used to run a small office (business)?

I still think the guys have been kicked off the network because of the manner they downloaded and not because of how much.Lets face it you cannot do 500GB's anyway without bypassing their shaping protocols(I stand to be corrected).
C'mon MWEB OPS back me up here

Yes , the only funny is King_Kraig at the mo, everyone else admits to utilising software to bypass.

I believe that would be what was against the rules. Bypassing the shaping.

It sucks that they just cut you off without communication - a heads up would be nice.

This would be the reason yes. I'm equally concerned about the fact that you did not receive the communication and I do apologize for this. A concerted effort was made to make telephonic contact with all customers who were disconnected. I have literally a handful here that we could not reach in this manner and were only emailed - perhaps you are on this list and do not make use of your mweb mailbox?

Kind Regards

Well, has anyone who has done 20gigs by bypassing shaping rules been kicked off? One can quite easily pull 500gigs a month without breaking any shaping rules but that usage, king kraigs case in point, will get you booted off.. I still don't believe it's the method but rather the quantity...

I think it's clear enough now that MWEB are targeting the high usage people and either threatening them with termination or just terminating them without warning. This is not inline with "international standards" as claimed by the MWEB Op. and contradicts statements made by assorted MWEB reps in the past.

If you think you're safe 'coz you're not a high data user -think again; the T&Cs are so broad that practically any internet activity can be interpreted as 'abuse'; leading to termination.

While i agree by passing is wrong, is it not mwebs grand tech departments field to prevent these types of measures, considering you claim to have a state of the art shaping system.

I find this throttling utterly ridiculous. Torrents download at 0.2kB/s on my 384 line and certain websites appear to be blocked completely, like www.downstorm.co.za which advertised full torrent download speeds so I was curious to view their website. Mweb however won't let me - the website just hangs yet http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/www.downstorm.co.za shows that the website is definitely working.

These ridiculously slow download speeds are going to be the end of my relationship with MWEB. Their CEO's statement that their throttling is marginal and only during peak hours is an absolute lie. Outright...

It's probably due to seacom. If when seacom comes back up and my torrents still go at 50kbs at 1 o'clock in the morning I will give them a call.

I think they are pushing us to Openweb. If they had a power user package of their own maybe they wouldn't be losing clients. Even though these clients were probably money losers, it's the power users that the gen pop go to for advice on who gives the best net service. If by next week things are still slow I'll be on GOLD. Don't care about the schlep of changing anymore.

Can you confirm or deny disconnecting people who have not bypassed your shaping engine as has been claimed by one individual on these forums?

Thing is I called MWEB and they told me that SEACOM should no longer be an issue. And the downstorm website also makes me suspicious that this has nothing to do with Seacom. But anywho - will check once Seacom is back online and make my decision then. Thanks...
