MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

It would be really swell if people would actually read the thread before going bat**** crazy and posting stuff about "OMFG! MWEBS ARE THROTTLING/TELLING ME IMMA ABUSER NAO!"

Seriously... your wife and kids can use your internet. What you CAN'T do is sell it to other people as is the case with an internet cafe or those dodgy wireless providers you get every now and then.
Also seriously... has anyone EVER been moved to another account by MWEB? I've done 50 odd gigs this month without even vaguely trying and before that I've done > 250GB and never, ever received a call. Know why? Because I do it within the terms of the AUP.

All they're saying here... and it's really this simple is: Don't circumvent the network shaping (duh), don't run a business off a non-commercial product (duh) and don't use 100% of the line 24/7 unless you're sitting in front of the PC and actually bloody using it. It's not that hard to understand, it's not rocket science.

Further, if you're using a 4mb line and can't watch youtube videos, SOMETHING IS WRONG THERE. I can happily stream HD youtube on my Mweb product with no issues. Seriously, get it checked out. I watched the friggin' trinations yesterday over streaming for pity's sake.

Even further, if you're unhappy with MWEB and feel they haven't represented themselves properly or just can't be bothered to help you or are providing a bad service or are being sneaky (Tanya35, I'm looking at you) - there's really only one thing left for you to do. Exercise your right to leave and GTFO to another ISP. The people quietly using huge amounts of BW for a tiny amount of money (I'm at ~R9.80/GB at the moment) thank you in advance for not cluttering up our network with your problems.

*waits for responses of "but it's not..."* Bah.

Well do you feel better now? Did MWEB pay you to say that? I have had serious problems with my MWEB account, they know about it but as per usual pass the buck. HOWEVER IT IS FINE WITH OTHER ISP"S!!! Then tell me is it still my fault.

Maybe if MWEB didn't shape P2P to DEATH then people wouldn't try to get around it.

I do feel better, thanks :) My therapist says I should rage at irritants every now and then :) But I wasn't raging at you (I think). Lemme go back and check.

Yeah no - you're the bloke I was talking about with the 4mb unyoutubable line. Something is seriously wrong there man - sorry if it wasn't conveyed properly but what I was trying to say is that your experience isn't the norm. Something is seriously wrong and unless they're specifically targeting you (why would they) - there's something else in the mix here.

And no, MWEB didn't and never will :( pay me for saying things like that. In fact, I took a good shot at them waaaay back when uncapped started on my blog.

are you always this much angry on a sunday morning ? :D

Well I must admit I also feel a bit better now. Couldn't watch Youtube clips this morning and it made me the hell in. At least got some frustration out now. Hehe.
It is just so annoying when things do not work correctly, one minute it does then another minute it doesn't. MWEB keeps on blaming Telkom but that doesn't help me at all. Only having these issues with MWEB other ISP's it is fine.

I also don't like it when people just moan at MWEB for no reason. However some of us do have reasons to complain!

MWEB does not have customer service. There must be something quite wrong somewhere for your youtube woes but in all probability it should have nothing to do with the contention ratio/AUPs. If you want it fixed you have to plague them.

From what I've heard, the customer service can be a bit slow yeah. Linoman, have you chatted directly to Mweb Operations about your problem? I can't see how this would be AUP related unless you're sitting on 24/7 downloads the rest of the time when you're not youtubing (which I'm guessing you're not)

Thankyou for the feedback Rudi.

Hey Saber, sounds very similar to what I said earlier, its the folks trying to get around the shaping that are pissing them off.

Exactly. And if you are engaging in activities which are against the T&C, you have no defense. And MWeb is justified in enforcing the T&C to ensure than the other 99.99% of their customer base can use the product as intended. There is no real issue to discuss here actually. The T&C are in place to protect everyone and to ensure that everyone can use the product. Simple as that.

I tell you what grinds me, when on a Sunday morning at 9am I am not downloading anything but I still can't watch a Youtube clip! On a 4mb line FFS, what is the excuse for this?

Maybe too many users are HTTP downloading at line-speed 24/7 and another whole lot are bypassing the P2P shaping rules on the line, so there's no more capacity left for you ... ? :erm:

o my god !!!!! i am abuser !!!! i share a line with my wife !!!! o my god !!!!

**** !!! the xbox360 too !!!

I presume this is a joke, although there's no smiley. If it's not a joke, then you have no common sense whatsoever.

Let me try and explain this differently. You joined MWEB’s uncapped service and contracted with MWEB. When you feel we do not deliver the right quality you phone us or in a number of cases you post it here. We are really committed to offering the best service out there, so we try and get to most posts and fix the problems. We are not perfect but I guarantee you that we try to cater for everybody’s needs.

We had some problems with the IPC and Telkom network capacity issues, exchanges that are overloaded and then the international issues. We are making good progress on all of them and with our engagement with the various parties. A number of initiatives are in the pipeline to ensure that we continue to build on and improve our service.

That said, we designed the uncapped shaped product to cater for the individual including your household. The unshaped product is for business and multiple users or the heavy users. Now keep that in mind.

What the unshaped product was not designed to do was to cater for multiple users to share the account. Or the two or more braches of your business sharing your account over multiple locations. Cyber cafés, ISP’s and people that host behind this product are abusing the service. Some other examples are the people constantly trying to get past the shaping rules that are there to make it fair for all. And if you look at the forums there are a whole number of them around. If shaping is such a major issue for you then subscribe to our unshaped product, that’s why we have one!

We have no intention of capping the service, but these users of the product are using bandwidth in a way it was not intended to be used and spoiling everybody else’s experience. So this is not some draconian application of the T&C as some suggest here. It is simply to say where there are people not using the product for its intended use, you must either move to the correct product or we will not offer this service to you. MWEB will keep our end up, but we need you to keep your end up as well. Most do, but a very small handful do spoil the service for others.

We remain uncapped!

Rudi

Crystal clear and completely reasonable (anyone who bleats "fanboi" after this needs to get a life, get some perspective and grow up).

shame does the lowlevels need visual cues to point out satire/joke/sarcasm ?

lino must be a tubeholic :D, though gmail/tube/google are on the bit slow or timeout side. then again we all know that mweb currently is more under stress due to seacom...

Aye, don't forget folks, seacom is still down and we are on backup bandwidth thanks to the actions of the mweb team.

We've already had one person seriously asking whether his connection can be shared with his kids at home. What's a "lowlevel" though?

Hi Rudi,

I think the problem you guys are experiencing with MyBB specifically is that there's quite a significant disconnect between what people here believe "normal, average, individual home use" is vs. your definition, and most of them probably fall more into your power user category. Lets be honest, the prices of your unshaped product are out of the range of what most would consider "reasonable" for individual use, power-user or no - not blaming you for the price situation. Even your normal shaped product's all inclusive price is honestly 3-4 times more expensive than it should be to be considered "consumer grade".

This is not an issue that's going to go away, in fact it's just going to get worse as more and more of what you consider average users start using higher bandwidth applications, and content starts getting larger and more media rich. This is a common trend in international markets. ISP's such as M-Web (but certainly not restricted to you guys) are trying hard to fight against this incoming wave, but the reality is that your current capacity per user is going to be far outstripped by what you're going to have to provide in the future and I have a feeling that this metric is going to end up being pretty heavily regulated, and that it's going to happen sooner than we all think.

Perhaps he means someone just slightly above cro-magnon man?

So my R350 all-inclusive 384 shaped uncapped account should cost 3 to 4 times less? I "should" be paying R100 per month for the same product? :wtf:

Yes. Although based on excellent use of language in his original ("shame does the lowlevels need visual cues to point out satire/joke/sarcasm ?") I suspect the cro-magnon honour may be more applicable to him than to me :)
