MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

Again I reiterate it's the quantity and not the method that will get you booted. By default most users who have managed in excess of 500gigs a month will have used a vpn so 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

If you were to download 100gigs using a vpn I can assure you, you wouldn't be booted so the method is not the defining criterion. Download 500gigs using vpn or not and you'll get booted..

So if this is the case, why am I beling told its because of the VPN? Secondly, TELL US HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH. Our guesses are not good enough, we need to know from MWEB themselves the total amount of data we and push in or out.

ITS A SIMPLE QUESTION, surely we are entitled to a simple answer?

/me waiting for the screams of the non-vpners for being disconnected.

Were are you getting your 500gigs from? I do agree with you this has nothing to do with anything else but amount of data used (remember SAOL pulled this stunt to)

I am not a heavy user but I am sure it is easy to reach such high figure shaped or not.

I guess no specific amount has been specified as MWEB don't want to create the "aim for the max/cap" syndrome so prevalent with "capped" accounts.

I suspect "using a VPN" is the standard reason for giving 500gig+ users the boot. I doubt MWEB know who is using vpn and who is not but by default 90% of users pulling in excess of 500gigs a month on their heavily shapped and throttled network have to be doing it with the assistance of VPN's so 90% of the time MWEB are vindicated and 10% (KING KRAIG) they are not..

How much is too much? I would guess anything consistently over 400gigs a month is going to raise concern over at MWEB headquarters..

Purely based on stats posted on myBB by users that have received the boot..

It's not actually the case, you're quoting sandmanm34, not MWeb. They've said that it's not the quantity but rather how you do it, i.e. bypassing their shaping with a VPN. Sandman is just basing his opinion on the posts here so far.

If you hadn't used a VPN type service it's quite possible they wouldn't have cut you off, I don't think we know yet.

I actually don't get the problem - if they can shape the hell out of rapidshare, hotfile, newsgroups, etc... why can't they shape the relevant VPNs?

mmm.. I disagree. I don't believe any user would be cut off for using a VPN where their total monthly usage didn't exceed 100gigs a month, 200gigs a month, 300gigs a month. So using a VPN alone is not reason for sanction, using VPN and 500gigs+ is...

The question remains use 500gigs+ per month "legitimately" and will you get booted. I suggest you would based on king_kraig's experience...

First Afrihost the hero fell, now MWEB - I find this most amusing.

Obviously MWEB still have a few remaining die hard fans - their time will come too.

I recon this is a much better case for ASA.

Uncapped, except its not.

.. do you even believe that? What there is, is a few "die hard" users on MyADSL who are attacking them for this and thousands of remaining users who don't care that the top few downloaders who bypass shaping are kicked off the network. Can you really dispute this?

And no one else who isn't pushing 400+GB, most likely through a VPN etc, will have their time come. Wow MyADSL is great at making a huge story out of almost nothing. Shame for the poor few people who can't download hundreds of GB's without any shaping while we have to pay for them to do so and use the service reasonably. You've got to be kidding.

He is the only one mentioned so far who claims to have been booted without bypass. At the moment I'm not sure how much to take into that.

The MWeb rep already answered this. They can easily, but chose not to because VPN is legitimately used by many users for work etc, which they have no problem with. It's just people also doing all their P2P downloading knowing that they bypass all shaping and then pull 500GB with it. Surely you agree this is unreasonable?

So why can't people using VPNs just not download massive amounts unshaped through their VPN, even simpler.

Got to agree with you here. This is still an outstanding product!!! But the 4mb package. I would think the 384 package to be totally unusable.. 384 is an archaic speed/product, coupled with heavy shaping/throttling and what you have is a reason to commit suicide..

Fair enough but how many users have actually been booted? Confirmed?

In fact, some of us are rejoicing that the abusers are getting to boot! By taking control the likelihood is that MWEB will be able to continue offering this service and it won't die like many others before.... perhaps a quote of a section of the terms will prove fruitful here!

12.11 We can terminate the ADSL Service at any time if we decide to discontinue the ADSL Service offering for any reason whatsoever, without any further liability to you.

I am perfectly happy with the abusers being given the boot rather than all of us being told that MWEB has chosen to no longer offer their uncapped service!

Well exactly. MWeb don't mind you using a VPN, just don't use it to bypass shaping and download massive amounts every month. There's nothing wrong with that.

The easiest and possibly best option here is to do what international ISPs have been doing for years.

MWEB can simply increase shaping or apply throttling to the top 20% of users (the international trend that I see is around 5% to 7% but South Africa is a special case right now).

This way the heavy users will not be able to abuse the network nearly as much and it will bring more stability and possibly reduce the need to offload customers, increasing revenue.

As long as MWEB can't prove that you have been using a VPN to avoid shaping (based on their T&Cs) they can't force you to change packages or leave based on that accusation, no matter the volume of data or the amount of time, as long as they can't put the evidence in front of you stating clearly that you have been using the VPN to bypass shaping they just can't... Anything else is tantamount to bullying.

From what I understand the clause referring to the misuse of VPNs is new and therefore they can't hold you accountable for using them before their T&Cs were updated, it only applies after the update has been made.

Agreed, so we back to square one. The issue is not the method used but the quantities used...
