MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

I have checked megaupload and netload
Both of those is file storage servers where they download something and you then download it from them
Which means you are using software to bypass the shaping rules by pushing the traffic through a HTTP server or a server that utilizes unshaped ports

In fact megaupload even goes so far as to first try your connection through port 80 and if it is slow suggest pushing it through other ports including the 1723 PPTP VPN port

This is from MEGAUPLOADS site
In case your ISP forces your web connections to pass through a proxy server, your download connections may collide with someone else's even though you are using different computers with different IP addresses. Some ISPs enforce proxy use only for connections to port 80, so we offer two alternate ports (800 and 1723) that you may try. This will never work if your ISP assigns private (10.*, 172.16-31.*, 192.168.*) IP addresses or uses NAT.

so that is probably why they take you on about that

as for Bierman I don't know

Interesting, so those sites might even send their packets with vpn headers to bypass shaping, didn't know that but it can certainly explain why they were disconnected then. Bit of a tough one though.

sorry what software is being used when downloading from these sites?

furthermore why do you assume that what is being downloaded has its natural home in p2p rather than http?

Necuno, it doesn't matter when he did download, shaping is supposed to ensure that he does not become a hassle to the network, if he wasn't bypassing the engine, then the fault lies with them.

I think what Necuno is driving at here is whether they were downloading 24/7 or not.My understanding is that this is in contravention of MWEB's AUP(section 12.5)

i'm curious as how to attain such a usage, that's all.

wel i dont use vpn just hotfile account and the free megauploads account, and last month i was able to get over 500gb and i also recieved a phonecall and email telling me to cancel my account or move to that R1999 account.

if i can ask, to be able to download 500+ gig are you downloading 24.7, half day or 80% of they day ? just curious :)

well from what have been said before MWEB heavily shapes rapid share or any file sharing service
with exclusion of HTTP and FTP traffic
now you have a site do a download so that you can pull it using HTTP (or the other ports they supply)

to me that sounds like you are doing it to bypass the shaping
otherwise you would just download it directly wouldn't you?

I know I would rather download it directly then
what other reason would you use that service for?

I may be wrong but that is just how I see it.

don't get me wrong I can see people using Megaupload for other reasons than bypassing shaping but then your downloads from it is not going to be in the high hundreds of GB's

maybe :

piss poor seeded torrents ?
not wanting to leave your pc on continuously ?

if mweb shapes you to 50% speed, is there any harm done if you your self use something like downstorm and then limit your transfer to also 50% ? only difference is you are going to get set 50% from start to end without having the ups and downs torrents usually have.

To presuppose that the natural way to download a file is via p2p is flawed. And so it follows that saying RS etc are ways to bypass shaping is also flawed.

12.5 You may not restrict, inhibit or interfere with the ability of any person to access, use or enjoy the Internet or the ADSL Services, or create an unusually large burden on our network or otherwise generating levels of traffic sufficient to impede others' ability to send or retrieve information, or use the ADSL Services in an abusive manner.

You cannot create a large burden if you are being shaped. I think you were refering to the automated download clause which has been removed.

Not if RS or other services are purposefully disguising the packets sent back as vpn or other such data packets versus normal http download packets.

The problem there Necuno is you are removing the power from Mweb to maintain their network.

if you do it that way I don't think you will get a call to be honest

obviously, but that's about only other reasons i could think of for use for a seedbox and related.

You can do 500GB, but it's about the limit if they're shaping you into the ground for 13 or 14 hours a day. 500GB is full speed for 12 hours a day all month.

Maybe what they do is they see you are heavily utilizing alot of bandwith at a given time, then they shape you a little more to see if it comes down to test if you are a violator or not......if this has no effect on your consumption then they automatically assume you are using protocols to bypass the shaping and gives you the CTSMM ( Call That Strips My Moer )

eish...I "wish" I was only being shaped 50%...the last couple of nights it seems shaping on my downloads have more been in the region of 80-90%

Hmmm........maybe Mweb is testing us.

Maybe they are heavily shaping people and the minute they see their bandwidth flying, they assume they are breaking the T&C, effectively giving them an excuse to terminate you.

For the people who have recently been terminated. Were your connections dog-slow or also heavily shaped?
