MWEB reduces uncapped ADSL prices

I have a problem! Current 384k users are going to pay R329 for their I meg line and current 1 meg users is going to pay R488 for theirs'. Or I am missing something. Are the current 1meg people be upgraded to 2 meg?

You are missing something. The Telkom line has not changed, so line rental stays the same (384k/1mbps/2-10Mbps). What has happened is MWEB have consolidated the 384k and 1Mbps DATA portion (the part under their control) in to a single product cheaper than the 384k ADSL DATA price (R219 to R199). I assume they have done this as there is a minimum admin cost to running the network, billing and so forth for all customers, the difference between the additional costs for 384 and 1Mbps is not worth having to products, especially since Telkom are likely to move the minimum speed to 1Mbps for a "fast" ADSL line rental. Since the next speed tier up from Telkom is not known it is impossible to create a product for the new "faster" ADSL line.

Reading threads like this all day is bound to make a few people either very depressed or rather unstable.

So of what I read Mweb is going to take the 4MB lines discounts they should have gotten and use it for Market share.... Oh and they say its also to increase the Brandband service to all customers.

You don't think that maybe they were previously making a loss on the 4meg accounts, hence no price reduction?

It makes sense since people with 4Mbps lines are typically those who are burning bandwidth and using protocols that are affected by shaping. Therefore use reduction to try reduce shaping requirements a bit.

If you prefer a different system you can switch to WA who use a throttling system which is based on usage rather than a shaping policy like MWEB. If you don't use much bandwidth and use other ports then this would possibly work out better for you.
 
I think if Mweb drop the 4meg line price of R539 to R499 then all the 4meg peeps will be happy.

So why can't Mweb throttle user to 1meg speeds during the daytime during 6am to 7pm and then open the lines at fullspeed in the eveing from 7pm until 6am. then they can balance it all out across the board.

That makes no sense, rather have torrents and such throttled during the day and normal stuff (www, email and such) running at full speed. SSH and VPN runs fine for me during the day too (although I am not pushing that much traffic, so not sure how much shaping affects it). I don't know anyone that would want to be throttled to 1Mbps during the day unless no one uses the internet then (Openweb have a product for this I think).

You do realise the shaping is variable, so if everything is quiet you can push more traffic. My point was there are other service providers who do throttling instead of shaping, MWEB specifically does shaping which seems to work for most of their customers like me. If you prefer a throttled system then WA or such would be a better fit.

But on a serious note you have will@MWEB in a corner here. why are we not getting less 30% on the R413 that is supposed to be for the IPC costs. I accept Mweb's R539 for the data portion, but why do the 384k, 1meg and business account users get reduction. this too me is just total greed. Mweb is doing a Nasper/Monochoice on us here since they part of the GREEDY BUNCH. we should get a R120 discount, which means we should be able to only pay about R290 for the IPc costs which Mweb pays to Telkom. so all in all we should actually pay in the region of R830 instead of R899. So i cannot see why Mweb does not reduce the cost to that amount which is only a reduction of R70. shame on you Mweb.

The other point i want to raise is why do we have to be penalised for the speed of the line. i understand that some people rape the system, but why don't you impliment a system where you throttle users during the day time and let not throttle and shape people from 6pm or 7pm until 6am the morning.

The R413 (adsl line rental) is not paying for the IPC. The IPC costs are part of your data costs paid to the ISP.

Do you still believe your 10mbps product is competetively priced, now that other ISPs are offering the same thing for several hundred rand cheaper.

I have been an Mweb customer for 10 years (I just checked, my first invoice was July 2002), and am currently subscribed to the 4mbps uncapped product, but my ADSL was recently pushed to 8mbps so I'm thinking of upgrading to a 10mbps uncapped account.

What extra value am I going to get spending R5000 a year more staying with Mweb?
