MWEB - SEACOM OUTAGE UPDATE

Some developments, gleaned from traffic graphs and tracert. JINX traffic is 3 times higher than normal, and TENET SEACOM is 5 times normal:
http://stats.jinx.net.za/
http://monitor.net.tenet.ac.za/cacti/graph_view.php?action=tree&tree_id=6&leaf_id=874

Tracert indicates that MWeb is now routing via JINX and TENET, rather than SEACOM directly. Very interesting...

What does this mean? TENET routes via SEACOM anyway, so why is MWeb going via TENET instead of via SEACOM directly? Is TENET still routing via SEACOM?

Love how the african mentality is that paying for full service and getting sub-standard service is good enough....

I suppose everything is fine because we're getting uncapped for sooo cheap when compared to the rest of the worlds prices, speed, and stability.

No, some people are just mature enough to understand the problem. It is not like seacom will be offline for the rest of the month. It will probably be back up by the weekend.

I can live without having to download a crapload for the next few days while mweb is making use of saix. At least they keep us up, more than can be said for some of the other ISPs that makes use of seacom.

Like I said, a fool and his money are soon parted.

I have quite a clear understanding of the problem - I shouldn't be paying for it when I can't use it - not sure if you require a special kind of maturity to understand this? If its down for 25% of the month (one week), then I should only be paying 75% of the service cost.

Guessing not upgrading to the new uncapped as it came out was a wise move afterall.

This is the first major problem I experience with mweb for the past 3 months, and they pretty much sorted it out and I can browse and use the interwebz. I just updated Darkfall client at 430kbs, checked my mail, and visit all my normal international sites this morning, seems to me my mweb acc is working just fine. Don't think I am being unfairly parted from my moneys. Just getting sick of all the people complaining when their connections go down for an hour or less.

so your a fool? you do use mweb don't you?

I haven't been able to VPN to my client site out of country for almost two days... would hardly say its working.

Dude, if it is that important just grab some pre-paid from gconnect, or wa or whomever is cheapest and on SAIX. You are paying for cheap uncapped and getting cheap uncapped. Don't run a business on it if you can;t be down for a few hours (or can't handle the more exptreme like we have now), that is why there are ISPs providing more expensive packages.

You will have noticed during the course of the morning that browsing, e-mail and Internet banking to both local and international sites is working again. As and when we are able to bring more bandwidth on stream (hopefully during the course of the day) we will look to open up protocols like Peer-2-Peer.

Thats exactly what I've had to do - get access elsewhere on top of the additional price I've paid for access I don't have. I'm not getting cheap uncapped - I'm currently getting nothing - and 48 hours so far is not a few hours...

Not currently at home so can't confirm whether all port access has been restored.

I have't had any major issues with MWEB's uncapped 4MB line, even when it performs at 12.5% (50KBs) of line capabilities most of the time - I do have an issue with extended downtime while paying for it.

Heh, you lot are amusing.

You're coming up with the broadband equivalent of, "I want the moon on a stick, and I only want to pay R23 for it!"

I'm not taking digs at MWEB, but I wrote up my "You get what you pay for" post on my site, simply because I think some people here need to read it again. (xrapidx, I'm looking at you)

On a side note. How do the ISPs lease bandwidth from Seacom, is it on a per MB used basis, or line speed basis?

And during this Seacom downtime, are they still paying FULL price for this access?

If its per MB, the ISPs win, because MBs can't be used by us, although we've paid for that access, so ISPs have our money, and pay Seacom nothing.

If its per line speed, sort of like our uncapped, and they're still paying for it, then the ISPs loose too, which I somehow doubt.

Its quite complex. But it can be summarised as Circuit speed. So whether they're using it or not, they're paying for it.
This rule does change from provider to provider, and you can usually negotiate a little when it comes to contract signing time.

If they are offering the moon and the stick, then we'll take it. If they only provide half-moon and a small stick then they must either stop offering or stop taking money.
