Well, switching back to the SAIX IP this week has been an eye-opener (a reminder of what MWeb ADSL used to be like).

I chose that package because it suits my surfing habits, but I knew that it was not the best value (there aren't any better MWeb options for me).

Actually Telkom takes half the money for a 4Mpbs line, so its not all MWeb's fault...

I can't keep up with the volume of posts...

Use the '-dsl' trick, and keep quiet until we all get booted off SAIX again!

Seacom has had quite a few issues so far

However the SAT3 link also goes down every now and then and it has been in place for allot longer

The only reason why it isn’t such an issue is because Telkom has satellite links in place where the traffic is pushed if the SAT3 cable goes down
Seacom does not have that capability and probably never will
And the reason why alternative service isn’t readily available is because Telkom sets the prices for the SAT3 cable and they screw just out anyone who wants to use them on prices or they cut them using excuses like "we have to protect our bandwidth for the world cup"

Seacom has their issues and realistically the repeater failure is standard hardware failure on a relatively new line.
Could happen to anyone (but this time it happened to a cable provider that is now providing most of this countries bandwidth so we are all getting Peed off)
Ever bought a hard drive or RAM that fails a week after you bought it?

Lucky for us your PC is right there and you can take it out and replace it immediately (if your supplier has stock)

The big difference is that for seacom there is a couple of thousand kilometers of cable lying in the sea and they can’t have a ship lying in wait over every possible failure point
Hell 6-8 days is less than what I have had to wait for hardware that was out of stock

So yes it really sucks for all of us who uses it
And no we won’t have proper cheap redundancy until EASSY comes on line
But it is coming and we will get there in time

Thanks - Since I still have no FTP or database access (but good http speed) I will go ahead with that.
Getting tired of editing websites and DB through http interface.

I have to figure out that bridging PPPOE thing you mentioned previously, as my router has hardwired login domains.

I haven't used bridged mode. Someone pointed out that dsl512two.co.za works! Don't know why...

BTW: MWeb e-mail says that SEACOM have alternaitve bandwidth (via bahrti.com India).

If the busted repeater is between Mombasa and Mumbai, then how are they routing through India?

You have to turn that option on in your router and then deactivate the "automatic login option".

Then you create a PPOE connection in Windows using the "Create New Connection" wizard.
Connect to the Internet -> Set up my connection manually -> Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password -> complete the steps.

Then you dial in using that.

E-mail from MWeb just now: About 30% of their customers are on SAIX. No matches on today, so SAIX demand is likely to be within normal range.

I'm not saying anything that wasn't said on the forums earlier. The MWeb rep knows me well by now...

There are other cables from Mombasa to India (correction: not Mauritius) though with limited capacity.

Given the current situation, even 1Gbps would be welcome for browsing...

Edit: Wikipedia indicates that Mombasa is liked to UAE via TEAMS since 2009:

No, I meant that they know that people have been taking DSL out of the login name and getting good performance.
If they want to block it they are welcome. If they want to forbid it, they should EXPLICITLY state so. They give implied approval to the use of this trick when it gets posted all over this forum and their people reply in the same threads.

If the capacity is available via this "dsl" "hack", why is everyone not being access to it? :mad: The "hack" implies it's reserved for non-DSL (dial-up) subscribers?

Not many average 'users' have the knowledge or confidence to flash their modem firmware, or mess with login settings. I assume that only a few will have gone this route.

MWeb have to split somehow their bandwidth (SAT-3 and SEACOM). Under normal circumstances this is not a issue.

They can't move all their customers to SAT-3 when SEACOM fails. They seem to struggle with routing and shaping when demand exceeds capacity. There is currently no solution that will satisfy everyone...

To all the Mweb subscribers that is unhappy with their service i would just like to add that you are getting a bad deal , i worked at a company(don't wana give names ) where i had to give support for a range of routers and 90% of the calls we received from the routers we supplied to mweb was because of the routers being locked and the epic realization that they got a 2 year contract (which can be cancelled with penalty most prob ) where they cannot unlock the routers even after the 2 year contract

Most of these clients either renewed their contract for another 2 years ( taking it in the pooper again ) or used the router for a doorstop

It reminds me of the mtn and vodacom cellphone locking issue a few years ago and both company's stopped with the cellphone locking but mweb knows they got alot of stuck customers so they keep on locking the routers

I just wonder how mweb reeks up a s**t load of cash and not implement redundancy.

No, the "hack" is just to change the authentication Realm. So instead of authenticating to MWEBs network, you'll be authenticating to the SAIX Network.

Fair enough. What I meant to ask was: Which subset of MWeb subscribers are enjoying international connectivity, apart from those employing the "dsl-hack"? How has MWeb selected who is given international capacity?

From whom should it purchase this 100% SEACOM redundancy? Is there enough capacity in the country for this to even be possible?
