MWEB secures SAT-3 cable capacity

International latency has dropped significantly on my Mweb account (CPT). In fact, I didn't even think this kind of latency was possible from SA. I'm getting a consistent 185ms to Europe in many online games, including WoW.

Paul Alston from TENET suggested (on another thread) that 160ms is the normal latency for CT-London (compared to 260ms for CT-Jhb-SEACOM-London).

The reason we have never seen this kind of ping time before is that we have always being used a highly congested network (SAIX pre 2009), or SEACOM, which has a number of extra hops (and longer route).

Whether latency remains this good depends on how well MWeb manage their shaping policies (they have had the last 9 months to practice!) and provided capacity keeps up with increasing demand. Cape Town has a relatively small fraction of national traffic AFAIK (maybe 15-25%) .

For me this just smells a little like going back in time to ye olde days of SAT3 outages. Now we can complain about SAT3 and SEACOM outages for MWEB. Who knows.. maybe they'll just blame SEACOM this time ala one-stop-shop. Neotel might even catch a break from MWEB always blaming them ! rofl

But why on earth would you contract one company to manage their competitor? That seems dufus stupid to me.

MWEB are only correcting what every other smaller ISP has already put in place after the first SEACOM outage. MWEB have profit margins to protect I guess.

As for Warcraft pings.. I'd move to another ISP if I was you.. MWEB are about to stop peering with the international ISP's next.. (kiddding)
