MWEB secures SAT-3 cable capacity

Nice! I may just have to re-think my hatred for this company based on how much they are doing and the balls and gusto with which they are doing it. What happened? Did they wake up from a Rip Van Winkle sleep and suddenly decide to become the most competitive company in SA? I still don't like their uncapped Terms and Conditions... but man, they really are pushing the envelope for internet in SA.

Great news MWEB. They are continually making good decisions...great to see that!

Don't have to love the people...but they are at least trying to move forward.

Mweb FTW.

My internet speed had a slight boost after this, ping improved etc; it's pretty much perfect right now. Just waiting for the new 10Mbps plans to come up...

uhm one point of contact....one point of failure....bad choice....
ummmm... actually it's brilliant as this is redundancy for their Seacom link on the eastern seaboard.

And not only the CPT guys will benefit, but all MWeb users will benefit if there are issues with the Seacom link.

TELKOM (SAT-3) to the rescure !! With M-web's new peering arrangment, I wonder what Telkom is charging Mweb for this service?

BTW does anyone know if Telkom still has Seacom capacity? Remember they bought capacity just prior to the SWC as a contingency...

I wonder if they're live with SAT3 already because i had sub-250ms pings in WoW over the weekend. Almost thought I was seeing things (or high)

People get confused (I don't blame you) since Telkom provides both the capacity for international bandwidth/physical lines/ATM's etc AND has their own ISP.

Telkom providing the facility to MWEB does not mean they peer with MWEB (since we're not talking about Telkom the ISP, we're talking about Telkom the line provider). So yes, they pay for the line/bandwidth to/from their data center to the landing point since this is what Telkom provides. The cable that connects us to the world.

Now, does Telkom (the ISP) peer with MWEB (which means their internet users can get content from MWEB's network and vice verse)? I don't know. Probably, since if Telkom (the ISP) has peering points at JINX and CINX they're already peering for free AFAIK.

They probably still have the capacity since you don't just buy bandwidth month-to-month with a cable provider like that AFAIK, you need to sign a contract (I think the shortest one being 12 months)

Good point.

I wonder then as a result of their "fall out" as regards the peering issue (ISP), is Telkom making up for that in charging Mweb for their capacity on Sat-3?

Of course they will charge them for the capacity ;) I think you meant over-charge.

It depends on how savvy MWEB's procurement team is in knowing industry standard prices. My bet is they know what they're doing so they're getting the price everyone else would be getting. Telkom would really be immature to charge them a higher price just because of a grudge. This will be anti-competitive and they could pay a fine for it if proven in court (something Telkom has had to pay in the past too)

With all the corruption within Telkom being exposed (I guess the employees have started to whistle blow despite constant threats of them losing their jobs if they said anything) I don't think they'll handle another "scandal" like this very well.
