MWEB slashes prices for high speed bonded ADSL

This is nothing new.
My company uses a unshaped 20Mbps connection for a year now.
We've been using the "Fishbone Line Bonder" system from http://www.voxdatapro.co.za/fishbone/default.asp

It allows you to use 5 x 4Mbps ADSL lines - you can achieve speeds of 20Mbps.

I don't think it was supposed to be "something new", that wasn't the point. This product is waaaaaaaaay cheaper than VOX's one. It would be nice to see if VOX also cut prices, though I must say their track record says they won't for a long time.
The advantage with the fishbone is you are not limited to adsl, you can use almost any product to bond and mix them. As far as I know also, they don't have a limit of 4 connections, I believe they can have many more if needed.

I'd be interested to see single link download speeds. In essence, a single http download (max rate). I know on multiple threads etc we'd often see full load balancing.

It's more a matter of me wanting to see how they've implemented the bonding.....

Anyone who gets this service (or has Fishbone for that matter), please let us know what your single threaded maximum speed is.

The biggest problem with Vox is that they don't offer any uncapped bonded solutions and their per gig charge is daylight robbery.

One has to wonder why Telkom can't offer you a single 16Mbps adsl circuit. It surely makes no difference to the exchange if you have a single 16Mbps circuit going into 1 port or 4 x 4Mbps circuits going into 4 different ports, it's all going to use to the same exchange backhaul capacity and the same DSLAM.

If you have only a single session going and not getting full speed then it's definitely not bonding. I would also be interested to know what the story is.

I expect that for a single person, it would not be a very satisfying experience.

This is better for a business situation, where several people/services are utilising the line in different ways (on different protocols/ports) at the same time.

I will never use their crap uncapped again, even their business uncapped was a problem.

Good to see initiative from Mweb.

Whats annoying is that this is even necessary. Bonding is essentially a work-around for shtty copper & infrastructure.

I asked them about this, and according to MWEB Business you will see speeds close to the theoretical maximum. It is therefore not a load balancing solution, but a true bonding solution. Will try to do some testing on the service soon :)

As the ISP offers the bonding, I think it can be true bonding. Remember, the 4 Mbps max we have is on the DSLAM side, not on the ISP side. They probably just split a single incoming stream in four, and aggregate them at the client side.

I suspect that it does matter to the exchange. Let's say they've got 16 Mbps backhaul on a DSLAM. Currently they can offer service to 4 customers at 4 Mbps. With a single 16 Mbps customer, they can only offer service to one.

Would you like some cheese with that whine?

Where did i hear that before......o_O from your previous posts :D. Seriously, Mweb are still new in the uncapped (especially the new cheap cheap ones), if you think you will get you 8mb uncapped when using their 4mb business uncapped, think again, yes, you might get 30% of the speeds all the time, but never over 70%.

IS is busy with a new revolution service that will be launched between September - November this year that will definitely put a dent in all these new cheap cheap services :D. Cant wait, now back to capped and happy to have FULL SPEEDS.

Please stop thumb-sucking figures and then turning it into a diatribe. If you pay for a 4mb business uncapped product, you'll get your 4mb. If you pay for 8mb, you'll get your 8mb speed. No one is stating otherwise.
I said the same statement about the cheese/whine thing because you're one of the consistently small group of people who continue to moan and complain about the same thing over and over.

Until it arrives, MWeb uncapped is considerably better than other offerings. Sure, there are cheaper solutions but none that I'm using that offer the same speeds so consistently.
Afrihost uncapped has turned into a joke. IS is throttled to hell and back and its CURRENT uncapped ADSL offering is downright despicable for such a large player.

No it does not matter. Whether you buy 4 x 4Mbps lines or 1 x 16Mbps you are still using the same amount of throughput. If Telkom is willing and able to sell you 4 x 4Mbps lines, then surely they can sell you 1 x 16Mbps line. Granted that this means they can sell 3 fewer 4Mbps, but I'm sure they could build this into the price to compensate. I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to pay 4 x the price of a 4Mbps to get a single 16Mbps line.

If only Diginet was affordable for home use... 50mbps would do the trick....

Could the MWeb rep comment on the technology behind this? Wondering if this would be viable for Site hosting which is quite dependant on packet-routing by IP address and interface

Hi PsyWulf,

No real big secret, everyone does it in the same way.

Since Telkom still maintain control of the base PPPoE sessions on their ADSL network, and do not entertain bonding on this level, traffic is tunneled (1 tunnel per line) to large concentration routers at our IPC headend. It is these tunnels that are seamlessly bonded to enable a single IP thread to utilise the combined capacity on all the lines in a transparent manner.

Wondering if this would be viable for Site hosting which is quite dependant on packet-routing by IP address and interface

You could, on the client side all packets origiate from the same (static) IP addr irrespective of line traversed, however note the asymmetrical nature of ADSL (i.e. max IP uplink throughput ~435Kbps x 4 = ~1.7Mbps)

i wonder why this thread is so quite....

this is a seriously good offering, our company are moving from vox to mweb as soon as everything is set up :)

Does the price include the dsl rental fee?
Hi Prof.Merlin,

No, for practical reasons.

Businesses moving to bonded solutions usually have some or all (singularly) of the ADSL lines to be used already. If line rental were to be bundled, the resultant cancellation/re-provisioning process would be too disruptive.
