Ah, I understand how you were working it out now.

That usage can easily be achieved without just streaming. 2Mbps is incredibly slow and large downloads (games on Steam, for example) could essentially be queued up, meaning that the line would be in constant use as a user tries to get their content downloaded at a rate of new content being released or bought.

213GB across 30 days is pretty "normal", I'd say.

Ah, 2Mb account, possibly you seem to be slightly above, my friends are all hitting 200, they refuse to go over it though to test, i did 300 on 4Mb, another guy stated he does just over 400 so i guess 200 decent for 2Mb

Oh, no. I'm just an ex-Mweb customer who left them (and ZA) before they started abusing their clients.

I still keep an eye on the market because my mom uses DSL (yay Skype) and, for now, she's with TelkomInternet because MWEB is well... yeah.

Just trying to wrap my head around how a 1 or 2Mbps DSL account, even being maxed out, could possibly be considered abusive.

I'm a little spoilt for bandwidth these days, so hearing that uncapped accounts in ZA are being throttled by the same people who once promoted "Free[ing] The Web" kind of grates me.

I will forever feel the urge to stand in solidarity with my fellow brother and sister netizens back home :p

Few years back iBurst claimed about a dozen people (me included) downloading at 128kbs was destroying their network. Same laughable story just gets a new font it seems.
 
Maybe a more computer literate person than me could assist me. Theoretically how much can you upload. At Telkom regulate line upload speeds? Because I have days when my upload (data sent) is almost if not equal to the data downloaded. Obviously, this is online gaming, but all I play is Arma 3 and Eve online. Eve is definitely not internet intensive… But I was wondering what was the theoretically possible upload maximum?

Morning SHVAK, the upload speeds are as follows:

1MB: 256Kbps
2MB, 4MB and 10MB is 512Kbps

Correction:

1MB, 2MB, 4MB: 512Kbps
10MB: 1024Kbps

I had the opportunity to be on Xs4all in Holland and Fios in the US ..... Great stuff, just hope that we get there sooner rather than later, but yeah...this type of nonsense from MWEB sets us back ....

I agree with most of the statements here,
1. Mweb were all "free the web" and they turn around and punch us in the face
2. Theatrically the max you can download if you max your line is 225gigs i think on a 1meg I havent seen anyone come close to downloading that much so how can it be abuse if we dont even get close to that figure?
3. I believe Mweb could have handled this throttling issue better maybe Tell us this magic no. and only apply throttling when theres system load.

I say we let the world know what mweb is doing to us post complains on hellopetr. complain on other forums etc.

Thanks again for the prompt reply. My question is what would the maximium upload for a 24hour period be on a 1 mbps line. I am sure I can just do a rough calculation, but I would rather a more internet savy person provide the answer.

Well if that is the case and Mweb has recorded me at least three times in the last 30 day cycle as being over 3.700gb upload way beyond the theoretical maximium it brings into question of exactly how accurate their measurement system is and if so makes any legal claim regarding the 30day cycle rather moot.
If you are going to throttle for abuse you must have a measuring standard that is not inacurate to the tune of 1gig! lol.
So they introduce throttling using a measuring system that is totally inacurate. In other words you are throttled not based on anything but our guess as to what you are using?
I dare you to explain that Mr Mwebguy? And trust me I am so far from the exchange I doubt I am getting the full 256kbs anyway which adds another question mark????????? :wtf:
 
I wish we had higher upload ratios available, 50kb is balls.

This is all however controlled by Telkom, not the isp's

I use 8ta/CellC for uploads as its way faster, also do quite a bit.
 
Looking at their throttling policy if you type in 384kbps you hit the nail right on the throttle sweet-spot - They gave us a free upgrade from 384 to 1mbps but are throttling us on what would be the maximium for a 384 line lol
You sneaky buggers Mweb, guess you could call the free upgrade a lie then? So glad I only have 45 days left with you. Still waiting for the nice ladies at the office to email me an official "you have cancelled notice"

Afternoon SHVAK, I don't understand.

If you have a shaped product, then you should not be able to max out your line 24/7. The reason for this, your traffic will be shaped.

We have unshaped packages that are supposed to be reaching your theoretical maximums or at least getting close to it.

This however does not apply to your shaped product.

This was a common misconception by our clients and has impacted on our network in a negative manor.

Did that just sound like MWEB admitting that their accounts don't run at advertised speeds?

Then why throttle and also why throttle almost exactly on the 384 sweet spot, not say 200gig which would be more reasonable?
 
Please answer - Question how is it possible to upload 3.482gb on a 1mbps line with a 256kbs upload limit?

We throttled due to clients bypassing the shaping. Which you know is easily done using torrent applications and so forth.

What is the 384 sweet spot you are referring to?
