Mweb Throttling Bull

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=384kbps+30+days
Now if you typed in 1mbps you would see what the maximium capacity would be
http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=1mbps+30+days

To sum up, Mweb claim I have uploaded 3,482gb when the absolute maximium possible could only be http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=256kbps+24+hours 2.765gb that is an error in the magnitude of 717meg

just verified and it seems that the upload speed data I provided earlier is incorrect. The upload speed for the 1MB line was increased to 512kbps.

Theoretically you could upload up to 3.4gig, if the line had an upload speed of 384Kbps. This would require your line and all conditions to be perfect.

We throttled due to clients bypassing the shaping. Which you know is easily done using torrent applications and so forth.

What is the 384 sweet spot you are referring to?

(Noob alert!)

Is it really possible? I guess it has something to do with VPN stuff.

i have no words lol

Took the wind out my sails lol for the time being

Because some people bypassed shaping on torrents? Absolute nonsense.

I was considered part of the ludicrous "3%" and have my torrents on CONSTANT LIMITING that correlates with my ping, meaning I'm never even running at full speed, and certainly never was when I got the delightful throttling email. So even users who actively limit their own activity were punished.

The network was fine before all this bull**** and only went to hell with these new policies. What does that say? A few things, but most notably that this policy is deeply flawed, and that Mweb has cut total bandwidth (and thus costs) to themselves, spreading things thinner and blaming a random percentile for it.

But hey, enjoy the delusion as the user-base dies down and down and down.

You ABUSER you:p

No worries, I was also in that apparent 3%, never got the letter, was accused of bypassing (wouldn't know how though) and also jumped ship.

It has nothing to do with any of this rubbish MWEB skivvy is saying - MWEB wants those people who have a 10meg account that's used to share recipes on Facebook, and to check e-mails and spam on gmail. In terms of ZAR per gig, the CEO looks like a cute little man who has maximised profit for shareholder while inserting tongue in cheek.

Shareholder 1, customer 0. :erm:

Bad business model, but what the hey, if wasn't for employees and customers MWEB would be a great place for a CEO to work.

By passing shaping?? lol.. yah blocking max cap is cost more uses than those doing that i suspect. Anyways the monthly usage on the dashboard is utterly useless as you don't know what you capped at nor do you know what the last 30 days avg was an how to self manage your future usage hence i closed both accounts + one next month.

this is why I cancelled with MWEB, I was using VPN for legit traffic and they were shaping it to hell, idiots!

My anti Mweb opus

Okay this is what I know to be fact. Mweb have introduced a new throttling system. Kudos to them!
They claim they have what they call a 30-day rolling window and when you go over the acceptable use (mystery number) you are throttled. Makes sense, we want the average customer to use less than 4gb (the 4gb is a random figure, could be higher or lower who cares) download per day so 30 x 4gb = 120gb.

So like the greedy goblin you are you start sucking Mweb dry, you naughty, naughty little boy!
And in your 30-day cycle you go over 120gb, everyone with me so far?:)
The horrible throttle monster is activated and your internet screeches to a halt!!!!!!!

Well that sounds reasonable, they have a system, they implement it fairly and they have even sent out a few warning letters to the random 3%. Not to me mind you, just the real abusers…
But, hang on a minute, why would throttling last longer than a day? It’s a 30-day period and you just went over that. You hit the magic 120gb! So surely on the next day you would be below that figure right, after all they just throttled you. Worst case it would take two days right or is it three

But no some people have been throttled for over a week. I am on day four of my throttle journey with no end in sight. Since being throttled my total has dropped by over 14gb well over what could be possibly used in a single day and equivalent to the last two days of use before the throttle hammer struck. Ergo I have to be below the 30-day figure (And before anyone shouts vpn and other trickery to boost my downloads way beyond what Mweb can detect in time I can assure you Mweb are well aware of what I downloaded, Two humble bundles on steam. That was six games in each bundle. I also reinstalled Planetscape 2. All downloads legit gaming related.)

So the question is, as 30 day rolling window should see you unthrottled rather quickly why the hell am I still throttled. I have been dropping roughly between 3 and 6gb a day off my initial throttled total which should have by now brought me back into the 30 day good to go rolling window?:erm:

The only conceivable answer is that there is no 30-day rolling window and they simply throttle based on a few days usage pattern and they have a fixed period for throttling. In other words punitive punishment.
It is the reason why they will not release the magical figure because there is none. I am throttled for going over 140gb, another person I know was throttled for going over 100gb.:(
If there was a 30-day window people would be throttled for no longer than two days and the more they used near the beginning of the 30-day window the sooner the throttling would stop.
So in conclusion I say to Mweb “Bull****” you are not using a 30-day rolling window at all. You have no magical number and throttle as and how you please. Worse still you throttle for fixed periods irrespective of whether your clients usage has dropped.
And that is why I am glad I am leaving Mweb because to defend a lie when all the evidence proves otherwise is an insult to your paying customers. And let me add I have been paying since 2010. I stayed with you through all your Seacom strife. I stayed with you when better deals were available from others and all you have done is shaft me in the arse!
:o

I am so pissed off by this throttling crap. Can you please just read this. This was from the press release after Mweb released their new throttled accounts.

MWEB’s 1Mbps Premium Uncapped ADSL pricing remains unchanged at R199 per month for data only and R339 per month for data plus an ADSL line (ADSL access).

“Unlike 1Mbps competitor offerings, this product will remain unthrottled,” MWEB highlighted.

And now I'm throttled? What the hell?

And the fact that on their website, the only difference in the product description between the Uncapped and Premium Uncapped is the mention of the word throttling. Please can someone write to the ASA to complain about this. It is purely wrong.

Morning SHVAK

We apply the same algorithm to all accounts, the only difference is the thresholds depending on the account you are on.

Every users usage is different and will therefore have a different experience with throttling.

Throttling is calculated on a 30 day rolling window. Which means, today is the 17th. We will therefore consider 14days of your previous months usage. The 17th's (today's) usage will be updated tonight and included within 30day rolling window.

This will change the next day, as it would be the 18th.

You are just looking at the overall amount and not the day to day and which days are being considered within the 30day rolling window.

I have logged about six separate complaints with ASA regarding this. Unfortunately, ASA will just make them amend the offending line or lines. It also takes time. Mweb like all large corporations know this so they are happy to publish blatant distortions of the truth and if called out about it by the ASA they say “sorry” change a few words and re-launch the advert or product description.
What will do the trick is word of mouth!

I think you have a bit of an comprehension problem. SHVAK's post was not about how the "rolling window" is computed across months. It's about why the throttling last more than one or two days, since MWEB essentially block their clients internet when throttled.

Well let's make them change the wording. I am tech savvy and even I was misled by the advertising. As I assume others have been misled. That word throttling is the only difference between their products, and it helps them get premium subscribers. If they were forced to remove it (well actually include it) there would be no difference and they would lose customers.

Clients are being throttled, not capped.

We still find clients maxing out the speed at which they are being throttled to. Which does affect the 30day rolling window calculation.

Paul Hjul has taken this further with ISPA, and potentially upto ICASA. At best we need to support him where possible.
The best ALL of us can do, at the moment, is make our feelings known in social media, and on MWEBS Facebook page, forums such as these, consumer sites such as Hellopeter and most importantly, word of mouth.

MWEB has blatantly ignored the ground swell and have been somewhat bombastic .... And WE are the ones who need to stop this.

MWEB Guy

Do you have anything to say regarding the false advertising on Mweb's website?

Where the Uncapepd ADSL mentions the Shaping and Throttling

And the Premium Uncapped only mentions the Shaping. Which would lead any reasonable person to believe that the extra premium amount you pay is for the lack of throttling on the account

Which is obviously not true.
