MWEB Throttling me?

I have a 512k line and a 512k uncapped account. Ever since this weekend, my download speed from the news server (news.mweb) went down from full speed to about 7kb/s or lower constantly. Other downloads are perfect at full line speed, only from the news server.

But now it get's interesting... If I use another CAPPED account from say Telkom, I get full speed! I even went as far as signing up for a Astraweb news server account with even worse results! I'm pulling my hair out at this stage because MWEB tells me to phone Telkom and Telkom tells me to phone MWEB WTF? :confused:

Anybody else with the same issue? Please make urself heard so we can get to the bottom of this BS.
 
That is very odd dude, i just opened up grabit and it is peak hours and it's sitting at 100kb/s. What astraweb server are you using? Have you tried different ones?
 
I'm using news.astraweb.com

I don't know if MWEB is choking me after a certain amount of data? I'm sitting on 21GB so far for the month.

You are most likely downloading uncached content.
 
When did you first test astraweb?

they throttle is during the day, so if you have only tried it today you will not get full speed. It does make sense that other isp's do not throttle during the day.

Do u mean MWEB or Astraweb throttles during the day?

It doesn't matter if it's cached or not, that's why I got Astraweb!

I responded to your first post where you said you use news.mweb.

Astraweb is throttled during the day. I get about 60KB/s

Throttling is done ISP side. (actually it's shaping not throttling. Throttling limits your whole connection where shaping only limits throughput on certain protocols.)

I don't mean to be rude guys, but I changed to my capped ISP (webafrica) account about 20 mins ago and I'm downloading from any of the Astraweb servers full speed constantly. I think we are getting shafted by MWEB and they just spin us any BS story to shut us up, but I'm sorry, I won't fall for any funny ISP terminology they try throw at me because I know what is what. I'm not just another gullible client who is going to stand for this. I want solutions!!

LOL If you don't want to hear the answers don't ask the question. You can't compare uncapped with capped solutions or even shaping and throttling policies.
 
I didn't get a valid answer yet man! Everybody is giving their own opinion. I want to know why the hell they tell me that I'm not being throttled when I am!? Why do they send me in circles? Why does uncapped have to be slow vs capped? Why does my friend who opened an uncapped 4mb line this past weekend have the same problem I have? What the hell is the whole point of uncapped then? Unlimited emails?? Come on.
 
Dude i think the lack of response may indicate you are the only one struggling.

I know when someone started a thread about afrihost, comments came thick and fast but nobody is commenting on your problem so i have no idea what is going on but i am on 41gb for the month and everything is humming along just fine.

Speedtest please.

They shape certain ports to ensure that the rest so that customers paying for the unshaped/business account (you have a shaped account I presume) can perform their duties during the day. If you want unshaped then you should go with the business package. All shaped uncapped accounts have the same problem. Mweb has thus far been the most lenient - with Afrihost if you are on uncapped and breach the 30GB mark they throttle EVERYTHING not just newsgroups to very slow speeds. Mweb simply limits certain protocols during the day to make sure that the network isn't dog slow.

That is the answer - not an opinion.

Listen very carefully and use your brain for a second, all uncapped solutions being sold at the moment has a fair use policy, all of them will shape you for certain things (especially usenet) during business hours as this is an uncapped product and the service needs to be maintained for all users. You cannot compare it to a capped or pre-paid solution.
 
Um, this may sound ridiculous... but you asked for everyones opinion... so why discount them when you got'em? This is yet another thread lambasting a perfectly legitimate service. You knew it was shaped, and it is. How is that a surprise? You cannot compare MWEB Uncapped with any 'ol capped service as they perform different functions. Now what, exactly is the problem?

Ive seen a trend in the last couple of days of peple who have just registered on this site and tell us how awful their uncapped is and how another product or company is so much better. Strange.
