MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

Amazes me, I would assume most of us here are on the Premium service, and the backup system has a 3rd of the capacity. Please explain how you cannot have a backup system with full capacity, for a Premium service??

I think 3rd of the capacity is very generous statement from MWEB :)

IMHO Seacom is ok, it's just that their backup capacity is completely useless. Whenever they say they're on backup capacity when tehre's a Seacom fault I can't even use Gmail.

I'd be happy with just 128kbps up/down on my 4MEG line if it was reliable during these problems!

Yes. I try to load international sites and it loads the logo and nothing else. Even local sites are doing this.

Nearly an hour just trying to get into hotmail. Theres definatly no capacity for anything. If I wern't so lazy I'd have moved providers long time ago. Mweb has just been a constant disapointment time and time again, considering when you look at other providers who have no problems dealing with things like this.

It really boggles my mind on how undersea cables can be cut. I mean its not like someone grabs some diving gear and goes and takes a hacksaw to the damn thing. So how do these undersea cables break?

Cable pirates.

Maybe instead of burning the gautrain they went the cable route

Typically fishing ships are to blame. The skim the surface with all kinds of nets and sh#t that pics up the cable.

Apart from natural underwater events (eg. seismic events)

That is my understanding of it.

It is usually caused by ships dragging there anchors in bad weather.
Or underwater "earthquakes".

SEACOM has identified restoration solutions and providers and is in the process of re-configuring the network and services to restore circuits.

Definitive timing is not yet available, however we are targeting restoration within 12 hours or less. Communications to customers on their specific requirements are underway.

We will update further within the hour.

I was away from my desk for 2 hours, and hoped the problem might be resolved by now (4 hours and counting). Seems like with a break in the Mediterranean its going to be a long day...

A third of MWeb's international capacity would be quite nice, if MWeb's shaping actually worked during an event such as this. Turning off P2P doesn't really help during peak-time (it might work with two-thirds capacity). Until packet loss gets below 5-10%, international is not usable for much IMO...

If Mweb has a third redundancy, then why the hell didn't they just cut everyone's speed to a third and block usenet, torrents and download sites? I could at least be receiving 1Mbps right now. Honestly, their systems are a joke.

I'm more annoyed with myself for not switching to Afrihost sooner, than I am with Mweb.

For anyone unaware - Afrihost's Business Uncapped is cheaper than Mweb's Premium Uncapped, and actually works during a Seacom outage.

Except I think Afrihost are stricter with how much you abuse the account, that's at least the message I got when i last phoned them.

Thanks for the heads up. I am on MWEB premium uncapped and I'm shocked by my experience with it. Ive had the account for 1 year now almost, and it was fine until 8weeks ago. Now I'm getting max 30kb/s throughput, high latency. It's a ****ing joke, im so ****ing angry at MWEB and their bull****, I have had correspondence with them for over 5 weeks now, it is ****ing horrible how my line has dodgey performance at arbitrary. Will be switching to Afrihost Business Uncapped by the end of the month. Mweb doesn't seem to care, not on the phones and not on twitter anyways...

Mweb you were cool, now you are ****.
