MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

Except I think Afrihost are stricter with how much you abuse the account, that's at least the message I got when i last phoned them.

Afrihost are pretty clear about what you get with the business accounts:

- Office hours totally unshaped
- After hours shaped, preference given to business customers over home uncapped customers, and they explicitly aim to have the account effectively unshaped 24/7
- Seven day rolling window of about 65% utilisation before 50% throttling. 4mb account is 180GB. That's 720GB a month, and over a terabyte on the 6Mbps I'm getting on Monday. I typically do between 350GB and 450GB a month.
- Priority customer support

Compared to Mweb's Premium, that seems like a cracking deal. You've got to be a huge pirate to need more than 65% of your connection's capacity at 4+Mbps.

I'm not getting dream speeds from WebAfrica or Afrihost, but at least they can surf.

Precisely - we all understand that speeds will be throttled when there are breaks - these things happen - however, what is unacceptable is the service becomes completely unusable - traffic should be prioritised to essential services such as gmail, hotmail, google search, etc.

During a cable break I could care less about torrents, youtube, music streaming, etc, but email and search - those are essential items.

Does sound good I must say - and what's the price differential?

So if I do just under 180GB a week I won't be throttled?

I'm not a heavy abuser or anything, when I last phoned them for the policy it was much stricter. Granted this was several months ago.

The 4Mbps Afrihost business account is R2 cheaper than the same speed on Mweb Premium. Check their website out.

It's a rolling cap, so the total usage for the last seven days must never exceed 180GB. If you really need to be doing over 700GB a month for whatever reason, you should probably go to Openweb. Whether you get a good connection with them is luck of the draw, but they don't give a damn what you do if you take out a Gold Uncapped account. My Openweb trials were horrible though, and I found their customer support severely lacking. Afrihost has the best website, best line management facility, a good Android app, a good attitude and they seem to be the only ISP pushing internet forward in SA. Plus the free gig they gave me a while ago has come in handy many times. I'd very much like to support them.

...

I cant open any sites besides Mybroadband and youtube....which is kinda pointless as no videos will actually load.

Frustration setting in...

You're probably being served by the local proxy/cache for youtube, otherwise the videos are probably hosted elsewhere internationally.

Most local sites are fine for me

Has anyone seen an estimated time when we will have even half-decent internet access????

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Please note that SEACOM have confirmed cable breaks, This could take some time to fix.

SEACOM are obtaining capacity on an alternate cable, that should restore our network to full capacity within the next 24hrs.

Please bear with us during this time.

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Please note that SEACOM have confirmed multiple breaks on multiple cables. This could take 2 to 3 weeks to fix.

FML, this sucks. Almost rely on internet as much as electicity these days.

Why does Seacom keep doing this to me :(

unreliable and expensive rubbish...SA internet is way more expensive then europe and way less reliable too. This is now the second time in a month that there is something down, and every time i have to buy a data bundle for 3G on top of the SP's subscription.... makes it about 100 Euro for a month of halfway decent internet at 4 megs speed, its laughable actually. However, when it works I am ok with it...but only just ok for the a.m. reasons, and because there is no alternative ;)

Hi Mweb Guy, will this alternate cable be shaped in any way more than what our mweb package already stipulates.

Good Afternoon, I do not have all the particulars at the moment. We will know more once the alternate capacity becomes available.

What the hell is up with Seacom lately? Seems to be the most unreliable cable in SA nowadays!

Hopefully Mweb has some other plans if Seacom keep up this level of reliability!

It is high time you move your primary capacity to a more reliable provider but I guess that will hit your profit margins too hard.

This makes me really mad, WHY is redundancy not pre-built into the network??? Why is there this ridiculous scramble to make deals and discuss alternative options to restore AFTER it all goes down. Where is the backup plan BEFOREHAND??? That's it, an entire F@$KING day down the drain...:mad::mad::mad: WTF AM I PAYING ALL THOSE $$$ FOR!!!!??:mad::mad::mad:

I AM DEFINITELY GOING TO BE SHOPPING AROUND FOR ANOTHER ISP. F&#K THIS!
