yea same here, no international connectivity for me. can barely connect locally at this point, luckily cancellation is at the end of this month :D

If there are 4 cables broken in the Mediterranean, then the 'domino' effect is likely to overload a lot of other cables (and peering points) in Europe. Half of the world (South Asia/India, M/E and Africa) could be affected, not just SEACOM/SA!

I found that traffic to the US is fractionally better than the UK/Europe (which is effectively zero) at present. Congestion seems to ease slightly between 5pm and 7pm, as users commute home/eat supper/watch TV/etc.

Oh? Please tell me how MWEB or SEACOM are being incompotent? SEACOM had a cable break and are trying to repair the problem, in the meantime they're finding alternative capacity for their customers - MWEB being just one of them. MWEB is also trying to mitigate the fallout by finding alternative capacity for its users. MWEB does have redundancy, but it isn't 1:1. The costs of 1:1 redundancy would be ridiculous for most end users to afford.

Mweb are being incompetent because they should have had alternative capacity plans in place for situations like this. Its happened before and it will happen again, and its ridiculous that business accounts should be offline all day while they scurry around "looking for alternative bandwidth"

There's LOADS of alternative bandwith on WACS alone. Negotiate a pay-as-u-use deal with them so that there's no cost incurred until it actually needs to get used. Or have a procedure in place to get emergency bandwith up and running within an hour or 2.

Cable breaks seem to affect Seacom more than any other cable, so yes they should have similar deals in place with other providers that can be switched over in somewhat less than an entire day.

I'm afraid this entire day reeks of imcompetence by both parties.

At least I get full speed with NNTP... probably for the first time ever at this time of day. International being down FTW :D

Queensburgh, outside Durban, COMPLETE blackout, local and international from 8am..

I see Mweb didn't publish a status notification via the normal channels http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/NetworkStatusNotices.aspx maybe they are too embarrassed?:o

So when I first noticed the outage this morning at 8am I blamed my router(pfsense) and rebuilt it twice before realizing something else was wrong!

I feel like a real idiot promoting mweb to friends and family recently...

Afrihost here I come..

Does anybody know if Afrihost allows open ports (25,80,110 etc) as mweb does?

The SEACOM issue is beyond MWEB's control, thus how are they being incompotent? SEACOM experienced multiple cable breaks so each break has to be repaired. How are they being incompotent? To be honest I think you're just over reacting for the sake of it. If you're listening to a call centre agent who probably has no expertise in the matter of cable repairs then its your own fault.

Don't get me wrong you need to call out bad service when its there, but as far as I'm concerned this isn't bad service its more like crisis control and mitigation of adverse effects.

SAT3 is owned by SAIX/Telkom.

Just wake up and see how other ISP businesses works. Mweb is a giant and I pay much more than I should for my services. The least they could have done or do is have a backup plan. Obviously they suck in what they do and are more interested in billing sufficiency and over subscriptions.

Any user that changed their default ADSL modem settings to use an international based DNS server (it may have seemed clever at the time), will not be able to access any sites (including local) during this outage. It sounds like several people on this forum have this problem...

MWeb did post an international outage on the network status page, but it is under the 'Other' tab (as if it somehow isn't really important!?)

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Please note that SEACOM have confirmed cable breaks, This could take some time to fix.

SEACOM are obtaining capacity on an alternate cable, that should restore our network to full capacity within the next 24hrs.

Please bear with us during this time.

The only "bear" I want to find is a more reputable ISP with a back up redundant system. Why I pay your company so much for this type of service is beyond me!!!

Local rather then international DNS servers

Now I see it! Yes one does get the impression its not important/they don't really care!...

I was using google DNS(8.8.8.4 8.8.4.4) and and also opendns(208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220) and once router was reset to default and using mwebs servers(196.43.34.190 196.43.46.190) limited local browsing is again possible.

Whilst that does seem like it's much better value than what Mweb are offering, I do have one small problem with it. Afrihost are advertising it as an unshaped account. It seems very misleading to say its unshaped and that "Everything you do on the internet will work at maximum speed. Browsing, Email, Downloading etc. will all be much faster and there's no need to worry about hitting your cap."

Only then to find out that it's only unshaped during business hours and that they throttle you after a certain amount of bandwidth... It's not an unshaped account at all then is it? It seems like their intention is to mislead unknowing customers. That's false advertising.

However, as i said, still far better than what mweb are offering.. the big question is how does openweb gold shaped compare to afrihost's business "unshaped" account?

It is slightly misleading, but they do stipulate on the relevant webpage that it is only properly unshaped during office. The other info I got from Afriman. Many people worship Openweb Gold, and I'll try it if Afrihost doesn't work out. As I mentioned, Openweb's support leaves a lot to be desired, and the interface and tools that Afrihost gives you are even more reason to change.

So is the international completely down?

I can get on youtube, pointless as it takes to long to load the vid but thats it...

Facebook/twitch/any other international site doesnt work for me.

Packet loss for me is occasionally down to 15%, which means that some sites load (slowly...)

Traffic to the USA seems to be better than UK/Europe at present.
