MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

Read Will's post. So... why am I still getting between 30-60kbps every night (weekends too) since the beginning of this month? (2mb line) I am also with Astraweb. Before, 200+ was the norm. I have posted several times, but have yet to receive a resolve on the matter. At one point you mentioned that you did something to my account and that I should reboot the router and test. Did that, posted the negative result, but I am still throttled to anything between 30-60kbps every night between 5pm & 11:30pm. Last Friday night, all I could manage was 30kbps. I had to buy capped data from Afrihost to finish an 800mb download in time to still be able to watch it. That went at 220kbps constant. I do not download in the day, so have no problem with throttling in the day. But weekend and evening speeds are not what they used to be. I should not have to resort to buying extra services to do what my Mweb account should do. Surely?

Hi subxero

The MWEB News server has always a best effort experience as there are a finite amount of resources you can commit to a free news feed.

We do not throttle.

MWeb guy - with all due respect, Will's post really did not help. He told us how good his DL was and therefore all is great. Questions were not answered.

You keep saying you do not throttle, but you shape for sure

The question that many of us are asking is why have things gone pear shaped recently. My experience was 6 great months to a seriously degraded service the last few weeks - why the radical change suddenly?

Yes I know it is a best effort service etc etc, but all of that has always been the case.

Please don't become like another ISP who spends way too much time either not answering the questions or telling users there is not a problem when many are having issues

Gotta agree, not getting full line speed or even half line speed after 10 at night is not cool .......

How is your normal HTTP downloads and actual speed test results?

I am not talking about MWeb's free NNTP product. I have an Astraweb account. Will's post mentioned the decent speeds he is getting on Astraweb's NNTP server. I am not achieving anywhere close to that on Astraweb. For the past couple of months, my NNTP downloads from Astraweb were always decent. As from the beginning of this month, that has changed. The downloads start out at 220kbps and within a 15-20 seconds the speed drops down to anywhere in the region of 30 - 60 kbps. That is throttling at work.

The same downloads from Astraweb's servers move constantly at 220kbps at any time of the day/week/month on my backup Telkom account (capped) and on the capped account I had to buy from Afrihost last Friday once I had depleted the remaining balance of the Telkom account - since Mweb was only allowing me 30 kbps max.

So, in my view, this is common only to my Mweb account. Early hours of the morning, the downloads are back to 220kbps. I am questioning what is happening between 5pm and then. Weekdays and weekends. My http speeds are fine - almost. Some that load at 220kbps on Telkom capped, load up at 90kbps max on Mweb.(graphic intensive sites). Some file hosts run at 90kbps, while others (the not so popular file hosts) go at 220kbps. Youtube fluctuates anywhere between 60kbps and 220kbps, but sometimes crawls at 50, only to die. In which case, a refresh sorts that out. But my speed tests on MyBB tell me I have:

Test conducted on Thu Oct 25 20:14:30 2012

Download Speed: 1666 kbps (208.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 406 kbps (50.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 190 ms

So that rules out a bad line. Besides the fact that any capped account gives full speed 24/7. So, you tell me....

I mentioned this last weekend, and am seriously contemplating the prospect. I can live with heavily shaped speeds of 30-60 kbps on an uncapped account if it were a 1mb uncapped account that is cheap. I would then be able to buy additional capped data for downloading at at full speed when I REALLY need it - like last Friday (stuck on 30kbps!:wtf:). So far, I am contemplating Afrihosts 1mb uncapped in addition to a 15gb Silver capped account. This works out to R30 more than I am currently paying Mweb, but at least I get the best of both worlds. R30 well spent! Afrihost is just an example. I may need to get input from other MyBB users as to best solution to suit my requirements.

MwebGuy... I am a pretty fair person, so you do have the opportunity to convince me otherwise. But, month-end is around the corner.

Hi

Please see my PM I sent you.

mwebguy I sent you a pm a day or so ago. Speedtest shows nothing wrong with line...but Newserver and HTTP downloads is crawling between 20 and 30 and maxing at about 40 -45 kB/s

I have the same problem. At times my line grinds to an absolute halt. That lasts anywhere between 10 to 50 mins. its only ever since the upgrade. During the day im lucky if it hits 30kB/s. Everyday between 4 and 5pm its not worth even trying to use the internet. im on a 1mb line

Haven't really had a chance to be online the last 2 evenings but tonight put me back on track of super slow.

Whats up MWEB? This thread is exploding with people all having slow to non existant throughput on NNTP, degraded latencies in online games such as GW2 and just general overall k@kness. I am also a reasonable person and I have been very happy with MWEB from day 1 of uncapped (with a few hiccups here and there) but this blanket "nothing is wrong" ain't flying no more. There is a reason I am happy to pay you guys more than other ISPs, it's because I think MWEB is worth being with. Don't chase me away. As I type this I watch my speedmeter run between 0KB/s and 44KB/s.

Good Morning StevenC

It definitely not our intention to chase anyone away, please allow me to activate monitoring on your account; as this would give me a clear indication of what is happening on your account.

Good Morning holocast, please provide me your MWEB account details via private messaging and tracers to local and international websites when you have the problem with speeds. Is your problem only linked to download speeds?

Hey MWEB Guy, I'm glad to say that my speed issues seem to have sorted themselves out somehow. I'm getting decent speeds at last :)

I can almost guarantee you these latest issues are from Telkom's side, my asdl account was degrading slowly no matter what ISP i was trying to download/play with. My adsl line then died (cable fault in our area). After a week of downtime and raging with Telkom my cable was back-up, exchange probably fixed up, and Voila - My MWEB and other ISP accounts are performing even better than what I pay for!

DO not trust Telkom to tell you your line is O.K.

Good morning MWEB Guy,

I see my line sync has been changed from 6144/640 to 4096/512. Why is this? I've been running on the 6 Mbps speed for the past months absolutely no problem.

My speed picked up this morning after averaging around the 20k mark for the past week. This morning it touched an average of 80k-100k but its now died down to the 15k mark again. Thinking of cancelling and moving on, this seems to be only mweb. Not impressed with these massive swings.

Good Morning, you had a problem with disconnections and syncing your line at 4mb seemed to help.

I have now put your line back to 6144kbps.

Good Morning bradza,

The last feedback I received from you was that your experience changed, as soon as the upgrades occurred. Please provide me tracers to local and international websites: i.e. mweb.co.za and bbc.co.uk

I also suggest dropping your line speed back down to 1mb and test if this has any impact on your general experience.

I thought this was an exchange congestion issue? As the line would degrade once everybody got home from work and jumped on the internet.

Sometimes the line does become more stable when syncing it at a lower speed.
