MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 3

Is torrents meant to not work at all during the day? I understand being shaped to slow speeds, but not downloading at all seems a bit extreme.

Hi Nookie, torrents are given the lowest priority on our network and therefore speeds are not guaranteed

I understand, but them not working at all? I'd expect at least 50KBps on a 4MB line, even if shaped. I left a small torrent (less then 10MB in size) running for several hours with zero other network traffic and it didn't even download a single kb.

Unfortunately, we are not permitted to troubleshoot issues related to torrents, due to the nature of the content.

That makes no sense. Torrents are not illegal by themselves as far as I know. Especially a mod for Skyrim (hence it being less then 10MB in size). The Blizzard Downloader uses the same protocol as far as I recall.

Edit: Think I found the issue, no one was bothering to seed. I'll see if I can find what I need on Skyrim Nexus or Steam Workshop.

International extremely slow as well as Youtube buffering the whole time and going to 144p.

Was this between 07h00 and 00h00? Try after 00h00. :p

We can enable enable monitoring for a couple of days to see what your experience is like after the patches has been downloaded.

Perhaps have the downloads for torrents run in the late evening to early mornings when you are not gaming, this would help the testing.

Any progress with figuring it out? I've had multiple failed attempts, and multiple successful attempts at gaming since the monitoring presumably started. In addition, some of the successful gaming attempts have occurred at what I'd consider "shaping time periods" (notably this afternoon), so you should really have a lot of data to examine, under different conditions.

No as yet, i will get the result tomorrow and check and then provide you with feedback

Has your speed improved ?

Also provide me with a speed test result

I guess you can do that.

I still think the most logical place to start is actually to ask someone in Mweb who deals with shaping: "are we shaping gaming data?" It would be a very fast "yes or no" response and give you a place to start looking. It is just too coincidental that my login problems (and Drifter's too) correlate with shaping of P2P.

Oh, also something to add which may help - in this game getting to play is a 2 step process: 1) login to your account, 2) load a character to play with. When there is shaping (i.e. no torrents are moving), I cannot get past step 1. When torrents ARE coming down, I frequently cannot do step 2 (loading a character) which is presumably just a data congestion issue. When this happens, I have to negotiate with my wife, who is doing the downloading.... if I can convince her to turn her torrents off, then step 2 works just fine.

Again, this suggests some things about the cause of the problem....

Edit: also please note that today will probably not be a good example of things, as the game is being patched and I will almost certainly be downloading patches instead of actually playing. But, go ahead with the monitoring if it will help.

I have to concur with the above. In my game I either log in through the Facebook Portal, or directly on Kixeye.com. I near always get past the login phase, but when the game data has to download in order to create the world and load your base, the connection fails as it times out. I can sometimes sit for 10 mins on "loading" (gathering game data) before timing out. In typical "non shaped" time slots, like weekends or very late at night, it will load and be available to play in a minute or so. What doesnt make sense here, is that weekends is typically the time when the game servers are the busiest, yet because it's outside of the shaping window, I have no issues. This clearly shows that it's not a gaming server issue due to load.

MOrning Drifter, are you downloading while gaming?

We shape torrents and if you are downloading and gaming during this time. It could cause issues.

have you tested with nothing else running on your network, only the gaming traffic?

Nope, I never download while gaming, learnt that lesson long ago, and yes, when I game I make sure there is no other traffic on my network.

Can we enable monitoring on your account as well?
